My Child and I Married a Billionaire
Chapter 446: Someone Is Targeting You
Amina was surprised Faye suddenly changed the subject and quickly said there was no need.
"He is my ex-boyfriend, but he’s not a scumbag. He—he’s a very good person. He was so good to me."
Faye Fisher: "Oh? Then why did you two still break up?"
"His mother didn’t approve."
Amina didn’t want to talk about it. Her heart ached just thinking about Zeke Walton.
"The gap between us was just too big. Really big. I can understand why his mother didn’t approve of me."
Faye Fisher understood.
’A really big gap. Is he a rich kid?’
"How did you two meet?"
Amina gave her a brief account of how she and Zeke Walton met.
She tried her best to paint Zeke Walton in a favorable light, but Faye Fisher remained scornful.
"Stop making excuses for him. I can’t stand people like that. They have no skills of their own, just freeloading off their parents. They have no say in front of their family but insist on putting up a front for girls. When he first wanted to get with you, he must have talked a big game. But when it was time for him to take responsibility, he fucking pulls a disappearing act and shoves his parents out to take the blame. It’s a trick that only works on a sweet, simple girl like you. Let me tell you the truth, Amina: there’s no such thing as a marriage the family disapproves of. It’s all just an excuse! If he truly wanted it, were his parents going to lock him up? He’s just an irresponsible scumbag! Stop clinging to this perfect fantasy you have of him and just forget him."
Although hearing Faye Fisher speak about Zeke Walton like that made Amina uncomfortable, she didn’t argue back.
"I get it. Don’t worry, it’s all in the past."
The two of them returned to the hospital.
Amina went to look after her grandmother, and Faye Fisher returned to Mr. Jacobs’s room.
She hadn’t been back since her visit that morning, several hours ago, and her grandmother was thirsty.
Seeing that her grandmother’s lips were so dry they were peeling, Amina quickly grabbed a cup to get her some water from outside the room.
She never expected that while waiting for the elevator, she would once again run into Zeke’s mother and the butler.
Zeke’s mother was feeling much better today and preparing to be discharged. Spotting Amina waiting by the elevators, she frowned and shot the butler a displeased look.
"Why is she still here? Didn’t I tell you to get rid of her?"
The butler was speechless as well.
’He’d clearly taken care of everything just two days ago.’
"I’m sorry, Madam. I don’t know how she got back here either. Let me escort you to the car first. Give me a little time, and I’ll go make some inquiries."
Soon, the butler had his answer and rushed to report back to Zeke’s mother.
"It seems someone is helping her. Two days ago, I arranged for her grandmother to be given a cancer diagnosis, and they had already left. But they suddenly returned yesterday. She went to the hospital director, who had the head of ophthalmology personally arrange new tests for her grandmother. He’s even scheduling the top expert to perform her cataract surgery this very afternoon. Madam, could she have asked the Young Master for help? I was already worried when the Young Master came to visit you yesterday..."
Upon hearing this, Zeke’s mother was so furious she almost spat blood.
’How can this woman be so hard to get rid of? After all the effort I’ve put in to deal with her... Why does she refuse to leave?’
’Zeke Walton, oh, Zeke Walton, how can you be so stupid? What is so great about that wretched girl? This is never going to end!’
But Zeke’s mother didn’t dare to scold her son directly, so she just called him to come pick her up from the hospital, hoping to sound him out.
Hearing that his mother was being discharged and wanted him to pick her up, Zeke Walton arrived quickly.
Upon seeing him in the parking lot, Zeke’s mother leaned weakly into his arms.
"What have you been doing these past few days? You didn’t even come home to keep your mother company. You and your dad, each busier than the last. Ugh, if it weren’t for the butler, I could have died at home and no one would have known."
His mother had been in the hospital, and he hadn’t been there to keep her company. He was only here for her discharge because she had called him. He was indeed an unfilial son, and Zeke Walton had nothing to say in his defense.
"Don’t say that, Mom. I’ve just been busy with the company. Didn’t I come as soon as you called? I’ll go home with you now and spend a few days with you. Stop letting your imagination run wild."
Zeke’s mother was delighted. Clinging to his arm, she said, "Now *this* is my good son."
The butler drove while Zeke Walton negotiated with his mother.
"I’ll come home, but don’t make me go on any more blind dates. Your taste is awful; I haven’t liked a single one of your picks. Besides, things are busy at the company, and I’m not in the mood to think about this stuff. Just let me have some peace and quiet."
Seeing his current state, Zeke’s mother felt he didn’t seem to have reconciled with Amina, which made her wonder. ’Who on earth helped that brat?’
After taking her home, the butler went to investigate again.
Zeke’s mother instructed him, "This time, be more ruthless. Settle this for good, and don’t leave me with any future problems."
Soon, the butler discovered that it had been Faye Fisher’s handiwork.
Although she was the daughter-in-law of the Jacobs Family, she was still no match for Zeke’s mother. After a bit of token resistance, the hospital director issued the command.
Amina was in the hospital room with her grandmother when the head of ophthalmology summoned her to his office.
"We had planned to operate on your grandmother this afternoon, but this morning’s pre-op checkup revealed two metrics that weren’t up to standard, so the surgery is off. First, your grandmother’s physical condition won’t allow it. Second, she is indeed quite old, and the surgery is risky. If it fails, she could end up worse off than she is now. I recommend conservative treatment. I’ll write you a prescription. Take her back to your home in the countryside, find a place with a beautiful environment for her to rest. Relaxing her mind and body will be better than anything."
Amina felt her heart sink.
After all, she had finally managed to convince her grandmother to agree to the surgery this afternoon. She never imagined the doctor would say something like this right before it was supposed to happen.
She really didn’t want to take her grandmother back to their hometown again.
But, if even the specialist didn’t dare to operate on her grandmother...
Amina called Faye Fisher, and as soon as Faye heard the story, her eyebrows shot up.
"What kind of crappy hospital is this? Yesterday, they swore up and down, making all kinds of guarantees. Today, it’s one excuse after another. I think he’s clearly just incompetent and afraid to take responsibility! Don’t you go anywhere yet. I’m going to find the director and ask him what’s going on!"
Faye Fisher stormed directly to the director’s office, but he wasn’t there. He was away on a business trip, and no one knew when he would be back.
Faye Fisher then ran to find the head of ophthalmology. The department head had been sitting behind his desk, leisurely sipping tea, but upon seeing her, he snatched his white coat and made to leave.
"I have a surgery starting right now. We can talk after I’m done."
Faye Fisher was no fool; she knew they were avoiding her. Fuming, she went back to find Amina.
"I feel like they’re targeting you on purpose. The misdiagnosis last time and now suddenly canceling the surgery... it’s too obvious. Did you offend someone? Tell me who! Bullying a young woman like this—I’ll make them pay for what they’ve done to you!"
Amina might not have thought of it, but Faye’s reminder made everything click into place.
’Could it be Zeke’s mother?’
’Has she been watching me all this time?’
’She found out I stayed over at Zeke Walton’s villa a few days ago, so she...’
’I already promised I wouldn’t see Zeke Walton anymore, but I broke my word. It’s only right for his mother to be angry.’ Amina no longer wanted to discuss Zeke Walton with Faye, nor did she want Faye Fisher to keep fighting her battles.
"Other than those scum of an aunt and uncle, I don’t know anyone here. It’s impossible that I’ve offended someone. You’re probably overthinking it. Forget it. If she really can’t have the surgery, then so be it. I’ll stay with my grandmother and make sure she can live out the rest of her days in peace. It might even be good for her not to suffer through an operation. Thank you, Miss Fisher. Let’s just leave it at this."
She thought she had disguised it well, but Faye Fisher had seen it clearly: the thoughtful, then suddenly enlightened, expression that had crossed Amina’s face the moment she mentioned offending someone.
