Chapter 88: Chapter 88: The Saint of Medicine’s Successor Is Found

Vesper Grayson got into the car. Just as she had settled in, Jared Hawthorne leaned over and fastened her seatbelt for her.

"Have you moved all your things over?"

A cool scent mixed with the smell of tobacco lingered at the tip of her nose as he drew near.

"Mhm."

"It’s Miss Kensington’s birthday tonight. Sebastian Kensington is hosting a small birthday banquet, and you’re coming with me."

"So sudden? I haven’t prepared anything."

She was attending an elder’s birthday celebration; she should at least prepare a gift.

"I’ve already prepared one."

"Should I change my clothes, then?" The outfit she was wearing today was more business-style, and she worried it wasn’t formal enough.

Jared Hawthorne’s dark eyes swept over her, and his thin lips curved slightly. "No need to change. You look great just like this."

Dignified and intellectual, with elegant, understated makeup. She was gentle and lovely, a pleasing sight to behold.

Half an hour later, the car stopped in front of a Gothic-style villa.

The villa was brightly lit, as brilliant as day. The entrance was packed with luxury cars, presenting a grand and lively scene.

A sports car pulled into the spot next to them. The doors opened, and Noah Nash got out with a young woman.

"Elias."

"Jared."

The girl’s voice was clear, sweet, and cheerful as she looked at him with a bashful expression.

"Sheryl? When did you get back?"

Sheryl Garland smiled sweetly. "A few days ago. I graduated."

"Congratulations!"

"Just congratulations? Aren’t you going to give me a graduation gift, Jared?"

Before he could answer, Noah Nash flicked her on the forehead. "If you need something, tell your cousin. Where did you pick up this habit of casually asking people for things?"

Sheryl Garland clutched her forehead and glared at him, displeased. "Ow, that hurt! Jared, look at him! You have to stand up for me."

Pouting, she dodged behind Jared Hawthorne, took the opportunity to link her arm with his, and made a face at Noah Nash.

Vesper Grayson’s gaze swept imperceptibly over the hand clinging to Jared Hawthorne’s arm, and she lowered her eyes slightly.

"Alright, let’s go up and see Kensington first."

Jared Hawthorne discreetly pulled his arm back and, taking Vesper Grayson by the hand, led the way toward a side entrance.

Sheryl Garland stared at his freed arm and lightly bit her lip.

The four of them entered the villa through the side door and took the elevator to the third floor.

They went straight into a bedroom.

Mrs. Kensington was sitting upright on the sofa. Her bright red birthday attire was especially festive, but her face was still pale and gaunt. No amount of cheer could hide her sickly appearance.

Standing beside her was a slender man in a white suit.

The man was slim, and his gold-rimmed glasses made him look refined and handsome. He had gentle features and a clean, scholarly air.

"Elias, long time no see." Sebastian Kensington greeted him with a smile.

Jared Hawthorne nodded and said to the old woman, "Kensington, happy birthday."

"Grandma, this is Elias from the Hawthorne Family." Sebastian Kensington leaned in and whispered in the old woman’s ear.

"Elias?" A glimmer of light appeared in Kensington’s eyes as she looked at him. "You’ve grown up. Just as handsome as when you were a boy. When did you get back from New York?"

"A while ago."

His return to Northolme had not been publicly announced, and he rarely attended business banquets, so not many people had seen him.

He had only come this time out of respect for the help she had given him in the past.

Mrs. Kensington’s gaze fell on the young woman beside him.

"And this is?"

"My girlfriend, Vesper Grayson."

"Very beautiful. Man Hawthorne is a lucky man. Unlike Sebastian, who is still single."

"Grandma, things like this are a matter of fate."

Jared Hawthorne opened a wooden box and presented it. "This is a hundred-year-old Lingzhi to help Kensington recuperate. I wish you a speedy recovery, and a long, healthy life."

The Lingzhi was purplish-brown, shaped like an umbrella cap, and had a thick, fleshy body. It exuded a mellow, ancient medicinal fragrance.

Lingzhi is known for its ability to replenish qi and calm the mind, strengthen the body, boost immunity, regulate bodily functions, and restore vitality. It is especially beneficial for the elderly who are frail, chronically ill, and suffer from poor sleep, like Mrs. Kensington.

Vesper Grayson recognized at a glance that this hundred-year-old Lingzhi was a rare, wild-grown variety.

"Good child, how thoughtful of you!" Mrs. Kensington gave a sickly smile. "My body... I’ve been ill for so many years. I’m afraid I’m beyond cure. If I eat this wonderful thing, I’m afraid it will just go to waste."

"Grandma, how can you say such things? Just focus on getting better. Your grandson will definitely find the successor of the Saint of Medicine and cure your illness."

"I know my own body... I know you’re a filial child. Just do your best."

Mrs. Kensington smiled. "I didn’t intend to celebrate my birthday today, but Sebastian insisted, saying we should liven things up."

"Sebastian is so filial. It just means your greatest blessings are yet to come, Kensington!" Noah Nash laughed. "My gift isn’t as valuable as Elias’s, but it’s a fifty-year-old wild ginseng."

"Thank you, young Nash. Is this your girlfriend?" Her gaze fell on the young woman beside him.

"Don’t say such things! This is my aunt’s daughter, my cousin." Noah Nash nudged her. "Sheryl, say hello."

Sheryl Garland said sweetly, "Kensington."

Just then, the butler hurried in from outside, leaned close to Sebastian Kensington, and whispered a few words in his ear.

"Are you serious? The successor to the Saint of Medicine has been found?"

"Yes, he answered our notice and came here himself. He’s at the villa entrance right now."

"Then what are you waiting for? Quickly, invite him up!"

"Yes, I’ll go right now."

The butler hurried out again to welcome the guest.

Sebastian Kensington’s voice was gentle. "Grandma, the disciple of the Saint of Medicine has been found. You can be saved!"

"Hard work really does pay off," Noah Nash said with a laugh. "Kensington, with the start of your birthday banquet, good tidings have arrived, and good fortune is sure to follow."

Mrs. Kensington was amused by him. "You child, you’re just a sweet-talker, always know how to please people."

Jared Hawthorne’s long, narrow eyes narrowed slightly, a profound and inscrutable cold glint flashing in their depths.

"Vesper, don’t you know a little about medicine? Why don’t you take Kensington’s pulse?"

As soon as he said this, Sebastian Kensington and Noah Nash both turned to look at her.

"Miss Grayson knows medicine?"

Vesper Grayson pressed her lips together and said modestly, "Just a little."

She turned her eyes to the old woman, walked over, and spoke in a soft, gentle voice.

"Miss Kensington, if you don’t mind, may I take a look?"

"You may."

"Please place your arm here."

She gestured for Mrs. Kensington to place her arm on the armrest of the sofa.

She extended her slender fingers and gently placed them on the pulse on the inside of the old woman’s wrist. Her fingertips rested lightly on the pulse point, which felt so faint it was almost imperceptible—thin as a gossamer thread, weak and shallow. It was clearly a sign that she was hanging on by a thread, her illness beyond cure.

Seeing her withdraw her hand from taking the pulse, Sebastian Kensington quickly asked.

"Miss Grayson, how is my grandmother’s condition?"

Vesper Grayson hesitated. "Her constitution is deficient and her pulse is weak. If the blockages in her heart meridian could be completely cleared, allowing her vital energy to return to its proper place, her body would naturally recover over time."

Sebastian Kensington nodded. "The previous doctors said the same thing. And the only way to clear the heart meridian is with the Saint of Medicine’s unique skill, the Nine Dragon Needle."

"Young Master, the person is here!"

The butler led a person inside.

The group turned to look.

The man was dressed in a simple white Taoist robe with wide, flowing sleeves. His beard and hair were neat, and he deliberately affected an air of transcendent detachment, like an ethereal, otherworldly master.

He walked with a composed gait, one hand behind his back as he stroked his beard with the other. He spoke in a slow, deliberate manner. At first glance, he looked just like a legendary hidden healer.

Sebastian Kensington took a step forward, his gaze landing heavily on the man.

"Sir, since you have accepted the Kensington Family’s notice, may I ask if you are the successor to the Saint of Medicine?"
