My CEO Husband Says I'm Irreplaceable
Chapter 122: You and your brother-in-law are living together?
Chapter 122: Chapter 122: You and your brother-in-law are living together?
Vesper Grayson’s almond-shaped eyes narrowed. "This is your project. I’m not getting involved. You’ve been with the company long enough; you should be able to handle things on your own."
"Sis, we’re family. We sink or swim together. We both want the company to reach new heights. Just come with me. You won’t have to do a thing."
She pressed her hands together, pleading with her.
Vesper didn’t agree right away. She lowered her gaze and stared at her for a moment.
"Gwen Grayson, are you hiding something from me?"
"No, you’re overthinking it."
Gwen averted her gaze, a little too quickly.
"It had better be. If I find out you’re up to no good and trying to use me, you can stop calling me your sister."
Her gaze was calm and her tone was unhurried, but her words made Gwen’s heart skip a beat.
Gwen quickly told her the truth.
"Sis, it’s Director Yates from the Planning Bureau, Miles Yates. He told me to bring you along, but I don’t know the specific reason why..."
’I don’t know Miles Yates. Why would he ask for me by name?’
"Did he say anything else?"
"No, just that he wanted to discuss the approval and to bring Vice President Grayson."
"So you just asked me to go with you?" Vesper sneered. "What if he asked you to sell me out for your own gain? Would you have agreed on the spot?"
"How could I? I’m not that kind of person! Besides, I’ll be there too. If things go south, we’ll just ditch the pretense and walk out!"
"Then what about your approval?"
"Worst case, we just let that plot of land sit."
Vesper’s expression softened. "What time tonight? I’ll go with you."
’Let’s see just what Miles Yates is plotting by asking for me by name!’
...
That evening, she and Gwen arrived early at the private room they had booked.
A short while later, the door to the room was pushed open from the outside.
A middle-aged man with a large potbelly walked in.
His suit was stretched tight, his face was greasy, and he had a briefcase tucked under his arm. He had the distinct look of someone who spent years in business entertainment.
"Yates, you’re here."
Gwen immediately invited him to sit down.
Miles Yates nodded, his gaze sweeping over Vesper’s face. A flash of unconcealed astonishment crossed his eyes.
’She really is a great beauty. Gael Keane didn’t lie to me.’
He walked straight to the seat beside Vesper and sat down.
"Vice President Grayson, I’ve heard so much about you. It’s a pleasure to finally meet you in person."
After speaking, he extended a hand toward her.
Vesper gave him a cool glance, but Gwen intercepted, shaking Miles Yates’s hand first before quickly letting go.
She pulled over a chair and squeezed in between them.
"I had no idea my sister was so famous!" She quickly took out some documents. "Yates, it wasn’t easy to get a meeting with you. Could you please see if these documents are in order? If anything’s not right, I’ll fix it."
A flash of displeasure crossed Miles Yates’s eyes, but he didn’t take them.
"There’s no rush for this. We can talk about it slowly after dinner."
His gaze fell on Vesper again. "Miss Grayson, I hear you were college classmates with President Keane?"
"Which President Keane?"
"President Gael Keane."
Vesper smiled calmly. "That’s true, but I don’t know him well. Gwen, on the other hand, is quite close to him."
After all, Gwen’s mother and Gael Keane’s mother were best friends, and the two of them were quite close behind the scenes. Gwen had known Gael since childhood, and their families had even intended for them to get together.
Past events had made Gwen see Gael Keane for the fickle, heartless, cowardly, selfish, and irresponsible person he was, extinguishing any lingering affection she had for him.
Gwen frowned. "What did Gael Keane tell you about my sister?"
’That bastard. He’s definitely up to no good.’
’That bastard even seemed to have a crush on my sister at one point.’
’He had a thing for my sister while hitting on me at the same time. I despise that kind of two-timing man the most.’
’Especially at that last banquet, when he threw me to the wolves, making me the target of public criticism.’
She couldn’t suppress a wave of disgust.
"President Keane said that Miss Grayson is as beautiful as a goddess and exceptionally capable. I admire you greatly." Miles Yates’s eyes, as he looked at Vesper, revealed a subtle, covetous desire.
Gwen stood up, blocking his line of sight.
"Yates, you must be what, forty-five today? My sister is in the prime of her youth. The two of you are not a good match."
Miles Yates’s face darkened. "I’m thirty-five."
"Oh. You sure don’t look it."
"Manager Grayson, what’s that supposed to mean?"
"Exactly what it sounds like. If you don’t have a mirror at home, you at least have a puddle of piss to look into, right? A guy like you, hitting on my sister? I’d say you’re a toad lusting after a swan."
Gwen grabbed her documents, put them back in her bag, and pulled Vesper up to leave.
"We’re leaving."
’If I’d known this was what Miles Yates was after, I never would have agreed to this meeting.’
"Manager Grayson, don’t you want the approval anymore?" Miles Yates’s gaze landed on Vesper. "I’m still unmarried. If Miss Grayson gives me a chance and we become family, I will certainly do my utmost to help."
Vesper let out a soft laugh. "Yates, I’m afraid I’m not blessed enough to stomach your ’fine bran’."
Miles Yates’s expression sank, his eyes turning grim.
"Don’t make this difficult. It’s your good fortune that I’ve taken an interest in you."
"Good fortune my ass."
Gwen slammed a fist into his face. "Do you have any idea who my brother-in-law is? How dare you have ideas about my sister, you suicidal son of a bitch."
BANG! BANG! Two more punches landed.
"AH!"
Miles Yates clutched his eyes, crying out in pain.
Before he could recover, Gwen grabbed Vesper, ran to the car in one go, slammed on the gas, and made a clean getaway.
"Sis, I really didn’t think Miles Yates would have designs on you. That mutt Gael Keane, I’m going to kill him!" Gwen’s eyes burned with a raging fire.
Vesper hadn’t expected Gwen to be so aggressive and actually attack Miles Yates.
"Those three punches weren’t light. Aren’t you afraid he’ll come after you?"
"I’m not. If he dares..." She paused. "I’ve still got you, Sis, right?"
Vesper raised an eyebrow. "So you cause trouble, and I clean up your messes?"
"Well, you’re my sister! You can’t just leave me hanging."
As thrilling as it was to hit him, she was just as scared now.
Vesper didn’t know whether to laugh or cry, but seeing how Gwen had defended her tonight, she decided not to hold it against her.
"Sis, where are you living now?"
"Citadel One. Just drop me off at the gate."
"You’re living with my brother-in-law?"
’A villa in that area is worth over a billion. Besides the Hawthorne Family, there’s no way Vesper could afford it.’
"Stop prying into my business."
"..."
Once Vesper was out of sight, Gwen took out her phone.
"Do you know where Gael Keane is?"
"President Keane’s birthday is today. He’s partying at Stellaris Plaza. Why are you asking about him? Don’t tell me you want to get back together with him?"
"Heh!"
Gwen sneered and hung up the phone.
She slammed her foot on the gas and sped straight for Stellaris Plaza.
Just as she reached the door, she heard a wave of teasing voices from inside.
"Gael, you really instigated Yates to go after Vesper? Can you really bear to see such a beauty get ravaged by a pig?"
"It’s her own fault for not knowing what’s good for her. She rejected me back then, and just a while ago she made me lose face in public."
"So this is you getting revenge because you couldn’t have her?"
"Even so, you shouldn’t have let Miles Yates get off so easy."
"What do you guys know? I specifically want a piece of trash like Miles Yates to ruin her innocence. Let’s see her act all high and mighty after that."
Peeking through the crack of the slightly ajar door, she saw Gael Keane’s sinister, twisted face, and her anger boiled over.
She burst in, grabbed a wine glass from the coffee table, and threw its contents at him.
Before anyone could react, she lifted her purse and slammed it viciously onto his head, making Gael Keane dodge frantically and howl in pain.
"Gwen Grayson, are you crazy?"
"You bastard, you dare to screw me over! I’m going to beat you to death."
