Mushroom Lord in the Underground City
Chapter 849: The Demon King’s Invitation
Chapter 849 -834: The Demon King’s Invitation
Moonlight spilled over the earth covered with a fungal mat, casting a dark white hue, with only one spot reflecting a bright silver light.
The pair of wings with silver feathers on Norris’ back were half-folded as he half-burrowed into Jida, busy tinkering with something.
After a long while, he finally pulled out, wiped the sweat from his forehead, then adjusted his posture and tried to fully squeeze into Jida.
Feeling the space accommodate his wings entirely, Norris finally exhaled in relief: “Finally got in!”
Inside Jida, directly across from Norris, there was an open yellow-covered book placed in a groove.
Words appeared on the pages:
[Honestly, I feel there’s no need for you to keep using this clumsy thing, and you’re going to so much trouble to modify it.]
[Didn’t you already test that the new wings can fly?]
[Dismantle that resonance cannon, isn’t it much more flexible to fire while flying than using this thing?]
“But I can’t sleep in the air.”
[?]
Norris shifted, settling into a comfortable half-reclined position, and began nibbling on dried mushrooms inside Jida: “In here, there’s no need to worry about Karen.”
[Norris…]
[Could it be you’ve developed a mushroom fetish?]
“Cough, cough, cough!” Norris thumped his chest, taking quite a while to cough up the mushroom crumbs he choked on, “What are you talking about? I’m perfectly normal, unlike…”
Norris suddenly paused.
[Unlike who?]
Realizing it was a trap, Norris didn’t want to talk to the Yellow-covered Book anymore, this book had been setting him up countless times before.
He pushed up the topmost Puki, squeezed half his body out to look at the sky and catch his breath.
Three full moons of red, yellow, and blue hung overhead, covering most of the sky.
Norris was just giving a casual glance but suddenly caught sight of a tiny black dot at the center of the blue moon.
“What is that?” He squinted, trying to see more clearly.
That black dot seemed to be moving, growing larger and faster. Norris suddenly realized it wasn’t enlarging, but something was plummeting straight down from the depths of the sky.
A massive blob of semi-transparent slime fell from the sky, and upon hitting the ground, it burst apart, splattering everywhere!
At the last moment, Norris dove back into Jida, dodging the impact.
After the impact, Norris was about to access Jida’s vision when he suddenly discovered that the connections of the Puki composing Jida were disappearing one by one, and even the reconnaissance Puki above had stopped responding.
Enemy attack? Or something else?
Whatever it was, Norris was not going to sit idle without any information.
He grabbed the yellow-covered book, forcefully pushed aside the dead reconnaissance Puki, and leaped into the air with a double jump, preparing for a possible assault.
Yet even when he landed smoothly, no attack came.
Only now did he clearly see the surroundings. The slime covered the entire ground like a layer of semi-transparent film had been poured over the earth.
The fungal mat was disappearing; the gray-white mycelium dissolved upon touching the slime, leaving not a trace of residue.
And the Jida behind him, its exterior had mostly dissolved, exposing the internal mycelium already invaded by the slime, destined to be completely destroyed soon.
Enemy attack! An assault from the sky!
Norris was about to report through the fungal network but suddenly stopped—he had just realized that he was disconnected!
“This… How is this possible?”
The fungal mat isn’t only on the surface, there are crisscrossing mycelium pathways underground as well.
Being completely disconnected meant that within a kilometer, not a single patch of intact fungal mat was left!
What could possibly achieve something like this?
Quick to react, Norris tore open his shirt, revealing a cavity on his right chest. Gathering Magic Power, he launched a mushroom cannon straight into the sky.
Not aiming to hit anything but to make it explode high above.
Norris wasn’t sure if the boss knew something like this had happened here, but this was his only way to send a message.
Yet, to his shock, a white figure descended from the heavens, colliding with his mushroom cannon.
The mushroom cannon and the Magic Shield surrounding the descending figure collided, creating a ripple before silently dissolving.
Norris stared at the figure before him, extremely tense.
He recognized this person.
“Demon King…”
Norris’s brain worked at lightning speed.
What kind of attack did the Demon King launch?
Why was he here for him?
He was neither a military commander like Sister Blood nor a combat powerhouse like Sister Hei, what could he possibly…
Norris suddenly lowered his head, looking at the senior—or rather, the Imperial Holy Scripture—in his hand!
And at that moment, the Demon King spoke: “Ah Huang, you still lack a soul.”
“Ah Huang? Was he referring to the senior?” Norris took a step back, hiding his hand holding the yellow-covered book behind him.
But in the next moment, the Demon King waved his hand, and the seemingly lifeless slime on the ground suddenly came alive, binding Norris immobile, forcing the yellow-covered book open.
The only solace was that this slime seemed to only decompose mycelium, and although the mycelium on Norris was quickly dissolving, at least his entire body wasn’t melting away.
Ignoring the struggling Norris, the Demon King approached the yellow-covered book.
[Lord Demon King…]
“Its soul is indeed abnormal, but this anomaly doesn’t aid it in creating a new soul.”
Addressed at its pain, the pages of the yellow-covered book trembled slightly.
[You… knew all along, which is why you allowed me to go with it?]
However, the Demon King shook his head.
“Though suspected, I wasn’t certain.”
“It’s not that I don’t hope for its success, but now it seems it can only rely on itself.”
“Ah Huang, come back. I need your Power for what’s next.”
The Demon King did not directly pick up the yellow-covered book, which couldn’t move on its own but stood before it, waiting patiently for a reply.
Facing its former master, the pages of the yellow-covered book were a bit stiff.
It knew, as soon as it returned, the Demon King would undoubtedly keep his promise, finding a solution for its soul when standing at a higher place.
After all, the Demon King never breaks his word.
Even if no solution is found, being by the side of the creator is no worse than the current situation…
Just as the yellow-covered book remained silent, somewhere unbeknownst to even it, Magic Power had once again gathered within Norris’s chest.
Boom—!
A nearly self-destructive point-blank mushroom cannon shattered all the scales on Norris’s chest, leaving him covered in wounds.
But it also burst apart the slime’s bindings.
“Senior! Don’t be swayed by the Demon King! The boss will be here to rescue us soon!”
Norris shouted, performing a double jump, seizing the yellow-covered book into his arms, curling himself into a tight ball in mid-air, and upon landing began rolling rapidly.
[Rolling Charge Level 10]
This skill, which Lin Jun had given Norris out of amusement and which Norris had never used since the initial tests due to embarrassment, finally saw the light of day today!
A living person, rolled into a ball, rapidly rolling away… The scene was so rare that even the well-experienced Demon King momentarily froze in surprise.
Unfortunately, that moment was not enough for Norris to escape.
The Demon King stepped forward, and Magic Power chased after the rolling Norris through the slime-covered ground.
An ice pillar rose from the ground, trapping Norris once again.
The Demon King approached unhurriedly: “Young man without a clear form, this decision must be made by Ah Huang.”
Clenching his teeth, Norris intended to repeat his trick and use the mushroom cannon to break free again, even though lacking the scale defense and being in a spherical state meant he might get blown up by his cannon, but he didn’t hesitate to gather Magic Power to his chest.
However, each time he attempted to gather the mushroom cannon, the Magic Power was dispersed, cutting off Norris’s last hope of self-rescue.
Just as he was in despair, urgent “dada” sounds suddenly came from a distance, rapidly approaching.
“Let go of Norris!” A familiar angry roar rang out, and a giant wolf claw suddenly swung from behind the Demon King!
“Karen?!”
