Chapter 841: Chapter 826: The Will of the Mushroom King

Fei Ling’s slender fingers brushed over the dull runes on the wall: "The mist has really done a number on the magic array!"

"There’s nothing we can do; the concentration of magic power in the mist is too high, and these materials binding the array just can’t handle it," Fei Yin explained softly from the side.

Fei Ling put her hands on her hips, glancing at the many spots in the castle that still had dark traces of blood: "What I’m worried about is the money issue. Do we even have enough to rebuild this place?"

"Maybe... if the Fungus Castle wins against the Empire, there won’t be wars anymore, and no need for defenses?"

"Then the Fungus Castle better win."

As the two sisters chatted idly, Vera and Sirean emerged from the morning mist.

"You’re right, there’s no money to rebuild. If the Kingdom doesn’t help, we might have to give up the ownership of this land. Although, no one’s living here now anyway..."

"No way!" Vera was interrupted by Fei Ling before he could finish, as she pointed at him, "You’ve struggled to rise from an adventurer to a noble, and now that the war is nearly over, how can you give up just over some money issues?"

Vera forced a smile: "Fei Ling, you’re right, so perhaps you could thoroughly inspect the rune damage in the castle. If there are intact parts, maybe we can save some money. Some areas have collapsed. Fei Yin and I aren’t as agile as you, so we’ll have to trouble you."

"Leave it to me!" Fei Ling said, and her figure darted into the ruins like a swallow.

Only after Fei Ling vanished from their sight did Vera’s smile gradually fade.

Fei Yin, who had been watching Vera, felt a bit sad upon seeing this.

She knew Vera had lost his memories of Fei Ling yet acted as if he hadn’t forgotten, which tugged at her heart.

Just then, Vera suddenly asked, "Fei Yin, Sirean, I want to ask a question. When we were captured by Puki and taken to the Underground City, did we receive a bag of delicious mushrooms from Puki?"

"Hmm... that did happen." Fei Yin answered instinctively, but soon her eyes widened in shock.

Fei Yin recalled that Vera had lost that part of his memory.

Although she and Sirean had narrated the experience to help reenact it for Vera, they couldn’t have possibly detailed every event, and Vera shouldn’t remember the part about receiving the mushrooms.

"Vera, could it be...?" Fei Yin covered her mouth with both hands in disbelief, her eyes welling up with tears of excitement.

Sirean next to her was equally incredulous, but his gaze was more peculiar.

Faced with Fei Yin’s expectant look, Vera hesitantly nodded: "I seem to... remember some things, though they’re just fragments and a bit..."

"That’s wonderful, Vera!" Fei Yin leapt into Vera’s arms, "This is great, truly great! Vera, your memories will return gradually! It’s really... so good..."

By the end, Fei Yin’s voice had turned to sobs.

Vera could only awkwardly pat her head, softly echoing her sentiments.

"It’s great that his memory is returning," Sirean calmly patted Vera on the shoulder to express his congratulations.

In her excitement, Fei Yin hadn’t noticed that Vera, whose memory was returning, wasn’t as happy as she had hoped and instead had a troubled look.

But seeing the tears of joy in Fei Yin’s eyes, Vera ultimately kept his silence.

It’s no wonder Vera wasn’t overjoyed; these "recovered memories" were quite peculiar in terms of perspective.

In those memories, "his" viewpoint was fixed at the ground or ceiling, observing himself and others and overhearing his own conversations with companions.

For some reason, there was an underlying sense of stealthy and sneaky vibes.

Are these really his own memories?

Vera couldn’t be sure, perhaps this too was one of the aftereffects of the sacrifice?

Right now, Vera had little confidence in his own mind.

At night, they each retired to separate rooms in the still-intact buildings within the city.

Fei Ling and Fei Yin slept in the room next to Vera. As they slumbered, they didn’t notice that, at midnight, a nearly imperceptible magic barrier had enveloped Vera’s room.

The room filled with sleep-inducing spores, and several Pukis in hand-sewn white lab coats surrounded Vera’s sleeping form.

It’s not that they planned to operate on Vera’s body; implanting memories is a matter of the soul, but Lin Jun thought that having lab coats would enhance the atmosphere.

Judging by the results, the implanted memories were far from perfect.

After all, Lin Jun didn’t have an original copy of Vera’s memories, so she could only pull similar memories from her own, piecing together bits of Vera and his group.

The methods were crude, and unsurprisingly, the effect was poor.

Vera seemed to show no emotional resonance with those memories, instead reacting with confusion.

It seems it would require his own memories to be effective.

Lin Jun planned to copy Vera’s remaining normal memories wholly, then restore the missing memories next time Vera used the sacrifice.

If necessary, Lin Jun didn’t mind engineering a scenario where Vera would have to use the sacrifice...

"Stop it."

The anticipated interference came, though Lin Jun hadn’t expected to keep it from Old Deng.

The Pukis in lab coats all turned uniformly towards the elf who had just entered, saying: "I’m trying to help him! Otherwise, with the little memory he has left, using the sacrifice another one or two times might reduce him to an infant who can’t even feed himself. He needs his memories, right?"

"You conducting such research already suggests you know how the world is maintained. Unfortunately, memories and emotions don’t correlate the way you think," Sirean shook his head, "Even if you returned the correct memories to him fully, you couldn’t restore his drained emotions. To Vera, who has already used up his memories, they would just be a collection of emotionless scenes. If restoring the world’s operation required this, they would have done it already... stop tormenting Vera."

Lin Jun looked at Old Deng without speaking more of Vera; instead, she suddenly said, "The Demon King says he wants to save the world, and the Death God says He wants to maintain its operation..."

The Pukis encircled around the elf, "Old Deng, knowing so much, why do you do nothing?"

With the fondness of the familiar title, Sirean felt a twitch at the corner of his eye, yet he kept his temper.

The Puki before him was no longer the weakling who would lose his entire dominion at a moment’s notice.

Taking a deep breath, Sirean pretended not to hear the recent term.

Then, with a slight wry smile, he said, "I don’t know who’s right... in fact, there might not even be a correct solution. The problem might not even lie within the Ark, which is why Ikezion left. But..." the elf shrugged, "it’s obvious the problem hasn’t been resolved, right?"

"You’re really weak," Lin Jun suddenly remarked.

"What?"

"I said you’re too soft, Old Deng!" The Pukis leaned back their mushroom caps, clearly only half the height of the elf, yet at this moment seemed to be looking down at him.

Faced with such direct ridicule, Sirean’s expression darkened, suppressing his anger, he spoke to the Puki with a low voice: "So what? Be like you? Knowing nothing yet arrogantly and greedily trying to control everything. If the Demon King is right, and you’ve blocked the true Savior’s path, leading to the destruction of a world that can be saved, what then?"

"Then let it be destroyed."

"What?" Sirean repeated the two words in shock, looking at the seemingly innocuous Pukis.

"Because you’re afraid of making a mistake, you don’t dare do anything? Old Deng, why are you acting like a little girl?" Several Pukis hopped up, skillfully forming a mushroom tower, and this time, they truly looked down on the elf.

A Puki extended a tentacle, slowly curling it before Sirean’s eyes: "Whether it’s the Demon King or God, if given the chance, I would never hand over the right to choose! If I’m correct, I’d be the Savior, the Puki of Grace, and the world would change according to my will! As for being wrong... haha..."

Lin Jun didn’t continue, but it was obvious the laughter bore no hint of remorse.

"Of course, thank you for the intel, saving me some experimental trouble; Vera is yours again."

With that, the Pukis tidied their lab coats and slipped one by one through the window, disappearing into the night.

Watching the open window, it was long before Sirean whispered through clenched teeth: "Evil Mushroom..."
