Mushroom Lord in the Underground City
Chapter 835 - 820: Outside
Chapter 835: Chapter 820: Outside
The body was only the size of two hand spans, green and shiny, with eight slippery tentacles curled up, and more than a dozen round, cute big eyes growing on its head and tentacles.
"Nevrilla, the Death God?"
"Yes." ℯℯ𝑙.
Lin Jun examined Him again.
This little thing in front didn’t match the image that descended during the Hand of Death ceremony at all, nor did it resemble the strange but solemn statue in the Tide Sanctuary.
Was it because the form of a small octopus wasn’t convincing to the believers?
The dozen or so eyes of the small octopus all stared at Lin Jun, as if realizing something.
He bounced in the seat, transforming into an odd woman with octopus tentacle hair, precisely the familiar form to Lin Jun.
Two data chains also changed accordingly, becoming a pair of shackles on her wrists, with dark light flowing.
For some reason, seeing the Death God needing to transform to show herself, Lin Jun rarely added some impression points to Him... although it was still negative after adding.
Finally having a bit of human form, the Death God stood up and smiled, looking at Lin Jun with the dozen eyes on her tentacle hair.
Then a long silence ensued.
Lin Jun suffered for having no eyes, losing in the staring contest.
"What are you doing?"
"Waiting for your questions." Nevrilla replied with a smile.
Lin Jun didn’t know what kind of trick He was up to, but since questions should be asked, casually asked, "This is inside the Ark, right? Which area is this?"
The Death God truly seemed like an explainer, introducing: "Protocol Hall, Administrator... which is what people call Gods, this is a place where we confer, one of the core areas of the Ark. Here we decide the direction of the world development, maintaining the continuous operation of the Ark."
Lin Jun glanced around the empty hall: "Where are the other Gods?"
"Little mushroom, Gods... aren’t eternal." The Death God’s dozen eyes separately looked at the empty seats on both sides of the long table, "I am currently the only Administrator in the Ark."
"Not right, isn’t it? What about the God of Light?" Lin Jun seemed to find a highlight, "A few years ago, that Bright Church summoned a Hero, don’t tell me you, as the Death God, are also doing the work of the God of Light!"
"Unfortunately, Ikezion left more than three hundred years ago. But before leaving, he left a response system centered on His authority, and over these hundreds of years, the Bright Church has merely been communicating with that response system." Nevrilla paused, then continued, "However, that hastily created system is indeed a bit rough, it even summoned two Heroes in the same era... To avoid it causing more accidents, I have already shut it down."
Poor Bright Church followers, turns out they worshipped a response system for several hundred years.
"Speaking of the same era..." Lin Jun pointed to himself, "I am also a Hero, right? But I should have nothing to do with the God of Light, right?"
Nevrilla nodded slightly: "Yes, you have no relation, you were placed into the world by me."
"For what purpose?"
"Naturally to continue the operation of the Ark." Nevrilla’s all eyes focused on Lin Jun, gaze gentle, as if looking at something precious.
"Not for saving... the world is almost consumed by the mist, how can it be sustained?"
"Very simple, as long as you no longer bind those souls that have already become pure."
Nevrilla said, waving a hand, the originally blank dome of the conference hall transformed, and a huge machine connected with countless pipes appeared above.
"Computation Furnace, all deceased souls will come here, their pre-death joys and sorrows will be erased layer by layer, converting into computational power driving each function of the Ark. With sufficient computational power, ether will naturally retreat to areas far from the continent."
Ether...
Lin Jun lifted his mushroom cap, looking at the soul light points swiftly passing through the pipes: "Consumable emotions... so souls leaving this machine retain no memories?"
Nevrilla nodded, rightfully said: "This is what you know as reincarnation, rebirth. If the new lives carry past memories, wouldn’t it be disorderly?"
Indeed, thinking this way makes sense, considering it’s basically a technological version of Meng Po Soup, only this time, the emotions of the deceased’s lifetime are what the God or the Ark needs.
Nevrilla approached a bit: "So, little mushroom, don’t keep holding onto those souls that should be sent to the Computation Furnace, release them when you return."
Upon hearing releasing what belonged to him, Lin Jun instinctively wanted to refuse.
However, what the Death God said also seemed reasonable, as the Ark needed soul operation, and he couldn’t keep resisting the mist, there’d come a day when he’s overtaken.
Ultimately Lin Jun could only stall by saying he had to handle the Demon King first.
Upon hearing this reason, Nevrilla surprisingly nodded in agreement.
"True, we must first deal with the troublemaker." He raised a wrist, shaking the pair of shackles, "Unfortunately, in this condition, it’s hard for me to help you much. But the Erase Stone I gave you earlier should be of some use."
So, that Black Stone was called Erase Stone.
"Troublemaker?" Lin Jun asked again, "Did you have grudges three hundred years ago?"
Upon mentioning the Demon King, Nevrilla’s tone unexpectedly carried a trace of anger: "They deviated from their mission, attempting to destroy this world, naturally making them our enemies."
Seeing this demeanor, Lin Jun suddenly retreated two steps, asking the ultimate question in his heart.
"You’ve been saying about protecting the world and maintaining the Ark operation, but at the end of the day, what exactly is the Ark?"
"A game? Or a research project of you Gods?"
"You mentioned the God of Light left, meaning He left the Ark, right? What’s outside the Ark?"
"In conclusion, is continuing to sustain it truly beneficial for us? Could it be that when it collapses, we’d return to the real world?"
After a string of questions, Lin Jun’s attention stayed firm on Nevrilla’s face, observing His reaction.
After a brief silence, Nevrilla surprisingly walked up, gently embraced Lin Jun, the squirmy, slippery octopus tentacle hair sweeping against Lin Jun, making him uncomfortable.
"Little mushroom, I know you don’t trust me, but I still want you to know that everything we Gods do is for the people in the Ark."
"Outside... there’s no hope."
Lin Jun pushed Him away with one hand: "I want to know the truth, if you want me to act as you say, at least you should share the information with me!"
"Hope you don’t regret it..."
Nevrilla waved His hand again, the entire Protocol Hall vanished, replaced by a scene of darkness, yet immensely familiar to Lin Jun.
Upon a barren, smooth ground, countless coffins were neatly arranged, looking up, was a pure black sky.
Lin Jun had seen similar scenes countless times already, every time he disassembled those mist-born monsters, he would see them.
All along, Lin Jun almost treated it as some kind of settlement animation, yet unexpectedly, the Death God revealed this!
But differently, the scene’s location this time seemed at the center, turning back, seeing was that previously seen immense machine—Computation Furnace.
All pipelines connecting the coffins ended here, numerous pipes crawling densely all over the surface of the Computation Furnace, light points shimmering, being the only light source in this dark space.
"This is...?"
"This is the exterior appearance of the Ark."
"Exterior? Real world?" Lin Jun lifted his mushroom cap, looking up at the black curtain, "Is this inside some construction?"
"Little mushroom, that darkness isn’t any construction’s dome. That is... the universe."
Nevrilla, under the pitch-black sky, opened His arms: "Though simply a projection, welcome to the Old World, Lin Jun!"
