Mr. Grant Treats Me Like a Treasure
Chapter 1042 - 1041: Brought It Upon Themselves
"For him,利益 always comes first, and he’s an even shrewder businessman. He’s invested so much effort in you and hasn’t lost a cent—there’s no way he’d just let go of all that because you’re marrying me."
Julian Ford’s analysis made a lot of sense; otherwise he wouldn’t have someone keeping constant tabs on Old Master Chambers back in Solaria.
"Mm."
Finn Chandler nodded. Mrs. Ford had just told her too, to be careful of the old man.
She herself had always been on guard.
But sometimes, no matter how careful you are, you still can’t guard against everything.
"Before he left, he said something to me."
Finn brought up the conversation she’d had with Old Master Chambers again.
"What?"
Julian asked.
Finn didn’t answer him directly. Instead, she first asked Julian about something else.
"Did my mother jumping off the building count as an accident, or was it deliberate?"
"Huh?"
Finn changed direction too abruptly, and Julian froze for a second.
"My mom’s the kind of woman who’s always clawing her way up, obsessed with money and status. There’s no way she wouldn’t cherish her own life!"
"She climbed all the way up to the rooftop of the hotel where I was, threatening me like she was ready to die, hoping to use the wedding to force me to let Pearl Chambers go. No matter how good she was to Pearl, she still wouldn’t really gamble with her own life."
Back when Mrs. Chambers jumped, Finn had found it odd, but she hadn’t fully suspected anything.
After that talk with the old man, Finn started wondering if her mother jumping had actually been her own choice.
"Jumping really did ruin the wedding between you and me, and made sure I wouldn’t live a good life."
"But she wouldn’t stake her own life as the price."
Bottom line, Mrs. Chambers was a selfish, cowardly woman, terrified of death; suicide wasn’t her style.
"When I left, she no longer had any intention of killing herself."
Julian recalled the scene from that day—no, to be precise, Mrs. Chambers hadn’t intended to jump from the very beginning.
If she’d truly meant to jump, she wouldn’t have stayed that far from the edge, and she wouldn’t have been completely crushed when she saw him appear.
She was just using the threat of jumping to force Finn into submission.
"But she really did jump on her own."
"Mm?"
Julian’s words stunned Finn. "How is that possible?"
"There’s surveillance on the rooftop of the hotel too."
"She took a phone call, and then she jumped."
Right after the wedding, Julian had sent people to investigate Mrs. Chambers’s jump.
Once they got the surveillance footage, it clearly confirmed that Mrs. Chambers had jumped off the roof herself.
So he hadn’t pursued it any further.
"That doesn’t add up."
Finn just couldn’t believe it. Could her mother really have jumped for Pearl’s sake, just to make sure Finn never had a peaceful day again?
"Finn, what did the old man say to you at the end just now?" Julian pressed over the phone.
He could clearly feel how anxious he was about anything concerning Finn.
"He said my sister and my mom have gotten the retribution they deserve."
Retribution.
It really was retribution: Mrs. Chambers jumping, Pearl marrying some ridiculous excuse for a man and living in misery.
"After I heard that, I started suspecting that my mom was thrown off that building by someone he arranged."
Otherwise, where would Mrs. Chambers have found the nerve to jump.
"And the man Pearl married was picked by the old man."
"This is him making sure Pearl gets her retribution in his own way."
If Mrs. Chambers and Pearl were both dealt with by Old Master Chambers, then the next in line would be Finn herself.
"The fate those two ended up with is something they brought on themselves."
Julian corrected her; he could hear the worry in Finn’s voice.
"Finn, Mrs. Chambers did kill herself. Don’t overthink the rest. I’ve still got something to deal with here—once I’m done, I’ll come back and stay with you."
"Okay."
