Mr. CEO's Substitute Bride
Chapter 1707 Wherever Your Eyes Rest, That Is Forever: Did You Hint at Something?
By the evening, Daxton Lancaster had almost sobered up. Ever since Evander Lancaster was born, Robert also came to stay with their parents.
It was just past eight o’clock, and the two little brothers were already sound asleep, one squeezed between their parents, and the other in the crib.
After sleeping all afternoon, Daxton wasn’t particularly tired anymore. He leaned against the bedhead reading the newspaper, while Violet Zimmerman was on the other side knitting a sweater for her son.
“Daxton, V-neck vests are in fashion lately. Do you want me to knit one for you?” Violet asked as she knitted.
Daxton turned a page of the newspaper, “No need. You can buy them with money, why waste the time and energy?”
Violet glanced up at him, understanding that Daxton didn’t want her to overwork, but his words still left an uncomfortable feeling in her heart.
Even though her knitting skills were ordinary, she had put her heart into it.
But if he doesn’t appreciate it, it’s fine, at least it saves her the effort.
Violet resumed her knitting, while Daxton commented absentmindedly, “Violet, if you have time, try to persuade Joseph to find a girlfriend. He’s not that young anymore, and if he keeps being picky, he’ll end up even more confused.”
Violet turned her head again. On the other side of the bed, Daxton was still reading the newspaper. After a moment’s hesitation, Violet said, “You’re his big brother. Wouldn’t he listen to you more?”
“Hmph,” Daxton chuckled lightly, “If Joseph listened to me, I wouldn’t need to ask you to persuade him.”
Upon hearing this, Violet suddenly felt guilty because her brother-in-law had promised her he wouldn’t fall for another woman, nor would he marry anyone else…
She wondered if Daxton knew about his brother’s promise to her.
Violet lowered her head and continued knitting. Her guilty conscience caused her to repeatedly insert the needle in the wrong place.
“Alright, I’ll try to talk to him when I get the chance.”
Daxton suddenly turned to her, “Violet, did you ever hint anything to Joseph?”
Violet…
She was stunned by Daxton’s unexpected question, staring at him for several seconds before asking in confusion, “Hint what?”
“Hint that as long as he doesn’t get married, you’ll never end things with him?”
Violet…
Once again left speechless by Daxton’s question.
Heaven knows, ever since she got pregnant with Evander, she hadn’t done anything with her brother-in-law.
Violet’s silence seemed like an admission to Daxton.
He curled his lips into a light smile, “Seems I guessed right!”
Violet finally realized that Daxton misunderstood her, assuming she said something to his brother, which is why he wouldn’t consider dating.
“Daxton, I didn’t!” Violet hurriedly explained, feeling more wronged than Dou E!
“I never mentioned anything to Joseph. How could I say something like that!” Even if she had such thoughts, she wasn’t shameless enough to voice them.
“Ha, really?” Daxton laughed again, slightly lowering his head to look at Violet, giving off an insidious vibe, “If you didn’t hint anything to Joseph, why wouldn’t he be willing to get married?”
Violet was once again stumped by Daxton’s question, holding the half-knit sweater in her hands, her delicate eyebrows furrowed, looking at Daxton incredulously.
Although her brother-in-law did promise he wouldn’t marry, she only allowed herself a moment of secret joy when she was alone, as the credibility of such a promise was too low. Her brother-in-law was in his twenties and couldn’t possibly spend his life unmarried because of it.
She was an adult and wouldn’t entertain unrealistic fantasies; perhaps what he said was simply a spur-of-the-moment sweet nothing or meant to just make her happy. Although she had been secretly pleased, she never dared to take it seriously.
After all, she didn’t want to ruin her brother-in-law’s life with an untrustworthy promise.
If that were the case, she would truly be selfish.
Although she had once been troubled by this and worried that her brother-in-law wouldn’t care for her two sons after settling down, she continually told herself she couldn’t be that selfish.
“Ha!” Another soft laugh, Daxton put the newspaper beside him and, through the sleeping Robert, pinched Violet’s chin, his lips curling in a sideways smile that was half-smile, half-sinister, “Violet, I never thought you’d be so selfish, selfish enough to hint that Joseph shouldn’t settle down just to secure a few more years of benefits for yourself.”
Saying this, Daxton gave a cold laugh again, dangerously leaning close to Violet’s face, lowering his voice to ask, “So, did you tell Joseph that I was the one who asked you to seduce him and that I know about the affair between you two, and I even eavesdropped from the next room…”
Suppressing her guilty conscience and fear, Violet shook her head continuously, “No, Daxton, you have to believe me. I never hinted anything to Joseph, nor did I tell him that you sent me over, truly.”
Violet knew she shouldn’t lie, but she understood even more clearly that if Daxton found out she told his brother the truth, the consequences… would be unbearable.
Every time Daxton returned from socializing, Violet always worried he might “bring up old scores” with her, but now, she was more concerned that he might misjudge the children.
“No?” Daxton asked with a half-smile, then raised his hand to cover the area over Violet’s heart, “Violet, whether it’s true or not, only you know. Aren’t you afraid of divine retribution for speaking against your conscience?”
Violet wasn’t superstitious, but when Daxton spoke this way, her guilt intensified.
A shiver ran through her, and her hand holding the knitting needle trembled accordingly, coincidentally poking the back of Robert’s head, startling him awake.
Rubbing his sleepy, phoenix-like eyes, Robert looked at his parents, who were pressed together across from him, and with a babyish voice, asked, “Daddy, Mommy, are you also playing kiss-kiss like on TV?”
Worried that her son would see Daxton trouble her, Violet hurriedly reminded, “Daxton…”
Daxton immediately released Violet’s chin, placing his palm gently on Robert’s head, stroking it lightly, and smiling, “Daddy wanted to get close to Mommy while Robert was asleep, but Robert found out.”
Violet secretly breathed a sigh of relief. Thankfully, he didn’t lose his temper in front of their son; otherwise, it would certainly leave a shadow.
“Son, why did you wake up? Do you want to go to pee? Daddy will take you.” Daxton asked in a good mood, his eyebrows soft, his tone gentle, seeming like a completely different person from the gloomy man moments ago.
“Mm,” Robert nodded, and Daxton grabbed his arm, pulling him up. Father and son got off the bed together and headed towards the bathroom.
Watching Daxton’s patient manner with his son, Violet felt a mix of emotions, both relieved and inwardly lamenting Daxton’s hypocrisy. This was his facade, considerate and understanding in front of others, but behind their backs…
Violet lowered her eyes again, continuing to knit the sweater for her son, covering up all her inner discomfort and helplessness.
