"What did you say?"

Daxton Lancaster thought he’d misheard. When he turned around, he was met with Violet Zimmerman’s calm eyes. Looking at Daxton, she said, word by word,

"I said, have Joseph come over to take care of me, while I still haven’t changed my mind."

Daxton Lancaster...

The arm he had around Violet Zimmerman’s shoulders tightened again and again, and he said seriously, "Violet, if there’s a next life, I’ll be a beast of burden and plow the fields for you alone."

"I don’t need that." Meeting Daxton’s phoenix eyes, Violet Zimmerman spoke slowly, enunciating each word. If she could, she only wanted to be a loving wife with him.

Back in that era when a woman followed the man she married, once a woman married, the only thing in her heart was being faithful to the end.

Joseph Lancaster came straight from school, wearing a green student uniform, with a school cap on his head. It was the most popular Japanese student look from TV dramas at the time.

The young man was carrying fruit in his hand—bananas, apples, and a bunch of grapes.

Seeing Violet Zimmerman with her arm in a sling, he immediately started scolding her. "Sis‑in‑law, how could you be so careless? Just yesterday I was saying you make people worry, and in the blink of an eye you’re lying in a hospital bed. Honestly, you’re a grown woman already!"

In fact, Joseph Lancaster hadn’t planned on coming. After what happened last night, this morning he’d still been agonizing over how to face Violet Zimmerman at breakfast, because he himself... had been so humiliating.

When he didn’t see Violet come to breakfast, he clearly let out a sigh of relief. But then he heard that his sister‑in‑law had tumbled down the stairs and been admitted to the hospital, and he’d been worried all day.

His sister‑in‑law was so delicate, with such soft, smooth skin. Falling down a staircase that high, who knew how badly she might be hurt!

In the end, Joseph’s shyness couldn’t win against his concern for his sister‑in‑law, so after school he bought some fruit and came to visit her.

Daxton Lancaster walked over and closed the door without saying anything, and Violet Zimmerman forced a faint tug at the corner of her lips.

Joseph Lancaster, still carrying the fruit, came up to the hospital bed. When he saw the bruising at Violet’s eye, he frowned involuntarily, then turned his head to glare resentfully at Daxton.

"Big Brother, really, Sis‑in‑law doesn’t know how to take care of herself and you don’t take care of her either!"

Daxton smiled, lowered his phoenix eyes, and walked over. For some reason, when he spoke to his younger brother he ended up staring at the cement floor.

"Sigh!" Daxton let out a breath. "Your big brother’s been driven half crazy by the factory lately, so I’ve neglected your sister‑in‑law."

"Something happened at the factory?" Joseph’s brow furrowed even tighter. He stood at the bedside, with the mesh bag of fruit still in his hand.

"It’s not a huge deal," Daxton sighed again, lifting his phoenix eyes to look ahead, his hands unconsciously hooking into the breast pocket of his shirt.

"A while back, Second Uncle also set up a factory, didn’t he? They’re producing leather too. Before, Gabriel and Michael were the ones running supply and sales. Now they’ve had our factory’s clients poached away."

"Seriously? That’s so unethical. Behind closed doors we’re all one family—what good does it do them to crush our factory!"

The teenager’s face was full of indignation. Although Atlas Lancaster’s family was always finding fault, in Joseph’s heart they were still family.

With a cold laugh, Daxton kicked at the cement floor by his feet. "There’s plenty of benefit to it."

"Big Brother, why don’t you tell Grandpa? If Grandpa finds out Second Uncle is doing this, he’ll definitely throw them out!"

"Tsk... cough!" Daxton sighed again and walked over to sit down on the empty bed beside hers. "Stay out of this. Your big brother’s getting ready to go on a business trip these days, to talk things over with our former clients. Your sister‑in‑law is still in the hospital—come by and look after her when you can."

Daxton Lancaster very naturally carried out Violet Zimmerman’s request.
