Moonfire Bride: The One they all betrayed...till she awakened
Chapter 94: What if?!
From trying to hold back the increasing surge of rogues gathering around the forest, and looking for more excuses to delay going after Della, things had been very busy at the castle.
These days, everything about the Alpha had become even more unbearable. Whenever he walked past, his aura carried enough chills to freeze your bones.
His blue eyes had definitely started turning into a menacing silver, and not everyone could approach him — even most of the guards were too scared to come close to him.
Luckily, he spent most of his time in his study. If he wasn’t in his study, then he’d be out in the forest haunting rogues while making sure that they don’t come close to any entrance to the tunnels leading to where Gideon was.
Things had been so hectic that he didn’t even realise that two weeks had passed.
But at the same time, time has been moving extremely slow that he felt every passing second like there was a ticking clock inside his chest.
And that was mostly because...he was missing her.
Her scent lingered almost everywhere, especially some corners in the castle which made him realise that she might have hid there most of the time.
And his room, was like a world of her scent.
The bed.
The floor.
Some of his clothes.
Every inhale had his senses going wild with need, at the same time it stabbed into his heart over and over again till he couldn’t breathe.
He wanted to curl into her scent and stay there forever but at the same time, he was afraid it would damn him even more.
As if he wasn’t already damned to the point of no return.
He was currently in his study, looking through each and every scroll and letter from his Pack civilians living in the towns that stretched beyond the castle.
He’d handled most of the cases and had seen them through. The most pressing issue right now was the increasing fear of the gathering rogues.
Malachi sighed as he dropped the 30th letter from the wolf civilian talking about the rogues and how something needed to be done about it. Last night, he had killed over forty of these mindless wolves, but more kept coming.
It was almost as if the more he killed, the more attracted they were to that forest.
He rubbed his temple a bit, then leaned back against the chair. The next council meeting was in two days, and they were gonna pressure him more on going after Della.
To kill her so that the power balance would go back to normal.
And Malachi knew that if he didn’t go after himself, sooner or later, they would start sending others to track her down and kill her. Once her location is figured out, that would be the end of it.
And for the first time ever, he actually didn’t know how to solve this problem. Even as he was seated right now, they might have already sent one or two assassins after her.
Hopefully, the few werewolf guards he had placed around the human town would be able to protect her. And if things go wrong? They’d send the fastest eagle they have.
Rowan was the best option for this.
With Rowan protecting Della, Malachi would have been more relaxed. But right now... Rowan had gone on a much more secretive mission. He’d left about a week ago, and Malachi was expecting him to return any day from now.
Just as the thought left him, Malachi heard a soft knock on the door of his study. He looked up and saw the shadow of the person blocking the candlelight from outside, then he closed his eyes again.
"Come in,"
Selene opened the door and walked in, softly closing it behind her.
She was holding a large tray of food as she approached him, dropping it on an empty spot on his table.
He didn’t say a word to her, head leaned back and eyes still closed.
Selene picked up the untouched tray of food on the floor that she brought in the night before, sighing deeply.
He wasn’t eating.
She’s always coming here to drop food, only to find the previous one untouched. Plus, he had been awfully silent to her.
She didn’t need anyone to tell her it was because of Della — and probably because of everything that Della had exposed about her that night.
But she hadn’t been arrested which means Malachi doesn’t believe what Della said.
No one would ever believe a rotblood over her.
"Alpha," She said softly, stepping closer to him, "I’m worried about you. You need to eat something,"
He didn’t say anything.
Didn’t even move
He didn’t even look like he was breathing.
Selene reached into the tray and pulled out an apple, holding it out to him, "At least, eat this, please,"
The scent of it told him what she was holding out, and his eyes twitched just a little bit. So small she didn’t even notice it.
Malachi asked himself one question — why was she giving him an apple instead of holding out a piece of meat to his face?! Doesn’t she think that as a werewolf, he would be more appealed to take the meat from her than the apple?!
It was common sense.
What Della said during her awakening about Selene came back to him again,
’What? I shouldn’t call that particular name? I shouldn’t tell him that you were there the night it all went down and delivered the finishing blow?’
No one knew Malachi had lost his wolf, because no one was there when it happened. Losing his wolf meant his appeal for meat had lessened greatly since the animal side of him had been ripped away.
And Selene had common sense.
Giving him an apple instead of meat...
He might just be overthinking this, but...
What if?
What if... Selene had been there? For she always seems to understand him more than anyone else ever since Katherine died. She’d always been by his side.
"Alpha?" She called again.
This time, he opened his eyes and stared at her face.
Long, brown hair.
Light brown eyes.
Creamy skin.
Beautiful face and voice.
She was still the same Selene he’d always known, right?!
Katherine was a she-devil from the moment you met her to the moment she died, and you had no idea about it till she buried a knife into your daughter’s throat. Innocent or guilty is never written on the face, and that includes Selene.
But still, he couldn’t just jump into conclusion.
There was no real evidence.
Picking up an apple could have been a simple fault from Selene.
He finally reached over and accepted the apple from her, but he didn’t bring it to his mouth. Instead, he stared intensely at the apple like he was staring at someone on it only he could see, "Tell me something, Selene,"
"Yes, Alpha?"
"If the person responsible for Katherine’s death..." His voice was almost gentle, "...had been standing beside me all these years..." He tilted his head ever so slightly, and his cold gaze moved from the apple and settled on her, "do you think I’d know?"
