"My baby... please...don’t hurt my baby..."

"Hey, hey," Cassian whispered softly, clamping her other hand in his, "It’s alright. It’s alright. You’re no longer in danger. And your baby is...," He paused, and a flicker crossed his eyes before he continued, "Your baby is fine. Your growing cub is fine,"

Della squeezed his hand back, gripping it tightly.

Annelise watched, scared that Della would fracture her wrist even more, "Easy,"

Cassian reached down and started to stroke her hair gently, "Don’t worry about your baby. It’s not going anywhere. Just focus on recovering, okay?"

"My baby...,"

"It’s fine. Focus on yourself, Della. Remember, you need to be strong for the baby to also be strong. Hm?" He kept on with his soothing words and touch.

His movements carried so much softness, so much fragility and his gaze was so warm. Slowly, Della’s pants started to fall short, and her breathing gradually became normal again.

Cassian never stopped.

The gentleness in his eyes. The warmth in his touch. The softness in his gaze. All of it had Annelise staring.

She couldn’t help but feel tears stinging the back of her eyes. If the Moon Goddess had deemed Cassian as Della’s mate instead, her life as a rotblood would have been...tolerable.

Because he clearly adores her.

And then, the mate she has — had — couldn’t even stare at her for five seconds without walking out of the room like he couldn’t stand her presence any much longer.

The first thing Beatrice saw when she opened her eyes was the annoying, soft, devoted eyes staring back at her.

He had clasped one hand tightly with hers, and she was beginning to feel numb in that hand.

It made her want to groan.

It felt like real torture to be the first face she saw waking up after being at death’s door a while ago.

She remembered falling unconscious after Cassian had left. And if she were to make a rough guess, Leopold must have found her.

"You’re awake!" He cried, pressing a kiss to her forehead.

It irked her.

"Help me sit up," She did groan this time because she couldn’t help it anymore. Leopold didn’t seem to care one bit, quickly wrapped a hand around her back and helped her sit up.

Sharp pain stabbed the side of her stomach, and it made her want to burst into laughter again.

She finally looked at Leopold again.

There were dark circles under his eyes, and he looked even paler than the last time she’d seen him.

"Are you okay? Do you need anything else?"

She touched her side and felt the bandage around the wound, "I’m healing perfectly. I should be fine in the next hour,"

He clasped her hand even tighter, and pain flared up in her arm. She was a twitch away from slapping his stupid face, instead, she plastered a warm smile on her face, as always.

"What happened?" He asked, "Who attacked you?!"

She gently rubbed her other hand over his, "You didn’t see the letter I left you?"

"I did," He replied, "Are you really telling me Nightveil is responsible for this?"

She plastered a pathetic, concerned look on her face, "I shouldn’t have gone back to Eclipse Crown Pack. I knew I shouldn’t have, but...," Her lips began to tremble, "A lot of things happened. Della...was there. She was caught trying to steal some diamond and they all attacked her. And Cassian...he—"

"He what?" Leopold growled.

She reached up and touched her healed neck, "He somehow thought I was responsible for the whole thing and before I knew what was happening," Her breath quickened and her voice broke, "I was so scared, love. I was so—"

She completely broke into tears.

Alpha Leopold crushed her into his arms, now looking like a man on a mission. He knew Cassian was aware that his wife was involved in the banner incident and also the fake blood he used for the blood pact — but he wouldn’t just sit down and take this from Nightveil.

Alpha Cassian had just made the biggest mistake of his life by laying a hand on his wife, and Alpha Leopold promised himself on that very spot to make every one of them pay — in shades and more — for laying a hand on his wife.

"They won’t get away with this," Leopold murmured, kissing her ear.

"But... Nightveil is powerful. And you’ve known Alpha Cassian going to war since you were little. I can’t imagine you both fighting because of me," Sh bawled even harder, "I never meant to get between your relationship with him,"

"None of this is your fault!" Alpha Leopold growled, "He’s always taken that Rot-blood’s side from the very beginning. Just because I’ve known him for a long time doesn’t mean I won’t make him face the consequences for crossing this line,"

"Please," She sniffed, "Please don’t go to war,"

"You’ll be safe, darling," He cooed, "I’ll keep you safe from now on. I’ll make sure no harm ever comes to you. This would be the last time I fail you, I promise,"

Beatrice smiled in satisfaction. She could feel the devotion dripping off this man’s powers, and she had that insane urge to burst into laughter.

How much more gullible could a person get?!

"While you were away, I had a long conversation with your older brother," Leopold told her once she was done crying.

She pulled back and looked at his face, making sure the innocent look was still fixed there, "What did you two talk about?"

"He told me all about the Rotblood. The curse she brought upon your back. How her existence affected everything and...how nice you’ve always been to her,"

Beatrice thought about bursting into her acting tears again, but she was tired of fake crying for now.

Leopold reached out and cupped her face, his eyes dripping with nothing but love, "He told me how much you loved her. How much you still love her. I’m so sorry. She must have used you so much while you guys were younger. While your love and care for her was the sole reason why she was allowed to live this long, she then decided to pay you by planting Moonfire and attempting to destroy your wedding,"

Beatrice finally allowed one tear out.

It seemed like the perfect reaction from her at this moment.

"She won’t get away with this. None of them will get away with this. I do not care what I have to do, but I will do it. You’ve suffered for far too long,"

She suddenly leaned forward and kissed him. Again, it seemed like the perfect reaction from her.

Not just for passion, but to fuel his rage.

People like him have always been so easy to control by showering them with a little more love.
