Chapter 52: Chapter 52: Becoming Sisters with My Daughter-in-law

Watching Gu Qingyin pick up an oyster and pop it straight into her mouth, the viewers in the livestream chat were dying of laughter.

[Director: Caught completely off guard!]

[HAHAHA, what even goes on in her head?]

[Shocking! A wealthy socialite will stop at nothing for a bite of food!]

Gu Qingyin quickly finished one, hissing as she breathed out the heat. She gave a thumbs-up to the camera. "Amazing! So delicious!"

Director: ...

The director, having been outsmarted, wasn’t pleased. But he couldn’t take it out on Gu Qingyin, since she hadn’t technically broken any rules. So, he could only vent his frustration on the next innocent guest.

Of course, "innocent" wasn’t entirely accurate, since the next person was Huo Xinghai—the perfect scapegoat.

"Mr. Huo," the director said, looking at him with a smile that didn’t reach his eyes. "We’ve gathered some questions from the livestream viewers. As soon as you answer them honestly, you can eat. Sound good?"

Huo Xinghai: "...Do I have a chance to refuse?"

The director smiled. "Nope."

Lin Tian and Lin Xian were gloating, but the moment they remembered they’d be put on the spot soon too, a sense of shared sorrow washed over them, and they couldn’t bring themselves to laugh anymore.

Only Gu Qingyin was completely unfazed, her eyes sparkling with a thirst for gossip.

"Alright, let’s get to the first question." The director wasn’t completely heartless; the first question was about the kidnapping. "Were you scared during the kidnapping? Were you hurt?"

Huo Xinghai wanted to point out that those were two questions, but then he recalled the director never specified how many he had to answer. He swallowed his words. If he angered the director over this, it wouldn’t be worth it.

He smiled warmly at the camera. "Thank you all for your concern. I wasn’t scared, and I wasn’t hurt." He paused, then admitted with a helpless look, "To be honest, I don’t really have any actual memory of the kidnapping process."

"I was unconscious the whole time. I was in my bedroom before I passed out, and I was in a bedroom when I woke up. If the police hadn’t kept trying to contact me, I honestly would’ve thought the whole kidnapping thing was just a prank."

Hearing this, the viewers in the livestream were both shocked and amused. They felt like all their previous worrying had been for nothing. The victim himself was more relaxed than they were! What a colossal misunderstanding!

Besides Gu Qingyin, everyone else present was also hearing this detail for the first time. Someone couldn’t help but laugh first, and like a contagion, the laughter spread rapidly until the air was filled with it.

Huo Xinghai pretended to look upset as he watched them laugh. "I got kidnapped, and you’re all laughing this hard?" he scolded. "Where’s the love for your colleague?!"

His words only made everyone laugh harder.

What could have been a heavy topic was lightened considerably by Huo Xinghai’s masterful touch.

This was especially true for the production crew. Although they didn’t say it, some of the more conscientious members had been secretly blaming themselves. Now, seeing Huo Xinghai poke fun at himself so freely, their guilt wasn’t so intense.

"Alright, next question." The director quickly scanned the questions and got an expectant look on his face. "In the future, if your wife and your mother get into an argument, whose side will you take?"

The question was so unexpected that Huo Xinghai froze, a dazed look in his eyes.

Gu Qingyin hastily swallowed her oyster, wiped her mouth, and said, "That question is invalid. I would never argue with my daughter-in-law! We’d be the best of friends! We’d go shopping together, get our nails done together, try new restaurants together, and complain about your husband together!"

Huo Xinghai snapped back to reality and said solemnly, "I’d side with reason, not relation. I’d support whoever is in the right, since they’re both very important people to me. Of course, the best-case scenario is what my mom just described."

[The mother-in-law of our dreams!]

[What do I do? I’m already starting to get jealous of Haibao’er’s future wife! I’m crying a river!]

[HAHAHA, if she becomes best friends with her daughter-in-law, then what does that make Haibao’er? The stumbling block that ruins their friendship?]

[Haibao’er’s answer wasn’t perfect, but it was very rational. I guess it’s a passing grade.]

[I’d give up being a vegetarian for life for a mother-in-law like Gu Qingyin!]

Seeing the overwhelmingly positive reaction in the comments, the director’s mood improved considerably. He decided to let Huo Xinghai off the hook. "Alright, last question," he said with a smile. "When is your new album coming out?"

This question was much easier to answer. Huo Xinghai smiled and said, "It’s already in production. It should be ready to meet everyone around the end of the year."

The fans instantly went wild, as if it were New Year’s, spreading the news everywhere.

"Can I eat now?" Huo Xinghai sat up a little straighter, looking like he was ready to dig in.

The director relented. "Go ahead and eat."

Huo Xinghai picked up an oyster and ate it, his eyes squinting with satisfaction.

Gu Qingyin had already eaten her fill and was now grilling cheese-baked lobster, which made Huo Xinghai’s appetite surge.

"Leave some for us!" Lin Xian couldn’t help but demand. Then he turned anxiously to the director. "Whatever questions you have, just ask them quickly!"

The director glanced at him and began unhurriedly, "Lin Tian, what’s your standard for choosing a partner?"

Lin Tian froze for a moment. For some reason, her cheeks flushed slightly. She pursed her lips and said, "Handsome, in good shape, responsible, loves me with his whole heart, and can make me feel secure."

[Why is she blushing? Don’t tell me she already has a crush on someone?]

[Blushing means she has a crush? She’s still just a kid. Of course she’d get embarrassed being asked a question like that in public!]

[She really is a kid. Those standards are pretty idealistic.]

[Unlike me. After being weathered by the years, my standards have become: male, alive, and makes money.]

"What are your work plans for the near future?"

Hearing this, Lin Tian relaxed considerably. She smiled and said, "I’m joining a new production next month. I’ll do my best not to disappoint everyone." After a pause, she added, "It’s my first time acting, so I don’t have much experience. Please go easy on me with the criticism."

The response in the comments was great. Everyone expressed their anticipation, saying that her first role would be good for gaining experience and that they hoped Lin Tian would study with humility.

She’s a newcomer to the industry, after all. It’s normal if she doesn’t do well at first. The director will drill her through the scenes anyway. As long as she improves in the future, it’ll be fine.

The next question was for Lin Xian.

Director: "Netizens are very curious about your job. Can you briefly tell us about it?"

Lin Xian was a bit surprised that people were curious about him. He smiled and said, "I’m a medical student. Most likely, I’ll become a doctor in the future."

Huo Xinghai was blunt. "You have so much fun, yet you’re a medical student."

Lin Xian gave a wry smile. "The academic pressure is intense. You have to find ways to de-stress."

[Fellow medical student here. After all that memorizing, what energy is left for going out...?]

[Does Lin Xian have two separate operating systems? One for studying and one for partying.]

[I’m so jealous of people with good brains.]

...

Once the Q&A was over, Gu Qingyin’s lobster was also ready. The four of them gathered around the grill and feasted, not only forgetting about the new guest who was about to appear but also casting the livestream audience from their minds.

Even the director couldn’t bear to watch anymore. But he understood they hadn’t eaten dinner and were truly hungry now, so he patiently waited for them to finish the lobster. Then, just as Gu Qingyin was about to start grilling meat, he seized the moment and announced loudly, "Let’s welcome our new guest!"
