Chapter 160: Chapter 159: Challenging the Impossible
Gu Qingyin glanced at him. "If you want that golden light, work hard and do good deeds. Don’t just wait for handouts. You’re a grown ghost; it’s time you learned to be self-reliant." She paused, then added, "And if you earn a lot, you can give a little to me."
Huo Yunjing’s spirits lifted, and he grew thoughtful.
’He was a ghost; he couldn’t earn money to support his wife. The only thing he could give her was merit.’
’He had to find a way to earn as much merit as possible!’
"Dispel the Ghost Realm," Gu Qingyin said. "We should get going."
Once downstairs, Gu Qingyin called the police. "Hello, someone has abandoned a critically ill child... Yes, the address is..."
Upstairs, after several minutes, the man on the floor groggily awoke. He pushed himself up and suddenly remembered what had happened before he passed out. A jolt of terror went through him as he frantically scanned his surroundings.
But everything looked normal, with nothing out of place.
The man looked bewildered. ’Did I drink too much and have a nightmare?’ Unable to figure it out, he fell back on old habits and yelled, "Ning Hong! Ning Hong!"
In the bedroom, Ning Hong jolted and slowly came to her senses. Only then did she notice the changes around her. She carefully placed the sleeping Little Treasure on the bed and went out.
Sure enough, the only person left in the living room was the man on the floor.
"Come help me up," the man ordered arrogantly, his first words full of accusation. "Didn’t you hear me fall? You didn’t even come to check on me. What the hell good are you?!"
Ning Hong didn’t move. She stared at him without blinking. "Da Bao came back. She resents us."
The man was already unsettled by the "nightmare." Her words made his heart lurch. ’So it wasn’t a dream?’
"Did she come with a really beautiful woman?"
A flicker of mockery crossed Ning Hong’s eyes before she nodded. "Yes. Da Bao called her Auntie."
Fear spread across the man’s face. ’It wasn’t a dream! Ghosts are real!’
"Where did they go? Are they coming back?"
Ning Hong shook her head. "I don’t know." She had been able to hear them talking at first, but then a terrible ringing started in her ears, and she couldn’t hear a thing.
The man fell silent.
Ning Hong, too, was lost in a daze.
An unknown amount of time passed before a knock sounded at the door. Both of them started, and when their eyes met, they saw the same terror reflected back.
The "nightmare" had also begun with a knock at the door.
"Is anyone home?"
A muffled, unfamiliar voice came from outside.
Ning Hong and the man both breathed a sigh of relief. The man waved a hand impatiently. "Hurry up and get the door."
Ning Hong went to the door and asked cautiously, "Who is it?"
After a moment of silence, a cheerful woman’s voice replied, "We’re from the neighborhood committee."
Ning Hong relaxed and opened the door. Outside stood a woman with an armband, who was indeed from the neighborhood committee. But alongside her were two tall men in police uniforms.
One of the officers spoke, his expression grim. "We’ve received a report that you abandoned a child, resulting in the child’s death. Please come with us to the station to assist in the investigation."
Ning Hong’s eyes immediately grew red. She was just an ordinary citizen, and with her guilty conscience, she didn’t dare resist. She could only mumble, "Okay."
The two officers exchanged a look, their hearts sinking. Based on their experience, her reaction was as good as a confession.
Before long, Ning Hong and the man were taken to the police station, where they gave a detailed account of the events.
After the case was closed, the police contacted Gu Qingyin, telling her they wanted to present her with an award banner.
Gu Qingyin refused the banner but asked a few questions about the case. It wasn’t classified information, so the officer on the line answered her questions willingly.
Ning Hong and the man were sentenced to five years in prison, and Little Treasure was sent to live with relatives.
Gu Qingyin thought the sentence was too light, but that was the law. Fortunately, for them, the real punishment was just beginning.
The officer also shared a detail that had stuck with him. "When we were investigating at the hospital, the nurse who cared for Da Bao told us that when she found Da Bao had passed, the little girl was clutching a drawing. It looked like a picture of a family of four."
Gu Qingyin’s eyes grew hot. ’Poor Da Bao,’ she thought. ’May you be born into a happy family in your next life.’
With the matter settled, Gu Qingyin returned to Yun City.
She realized her sons’ birthday was fast approaching, and Gu Qingyin decided to personally bake them a cake.
"There’s still over a month. I refuse to believe I can’t learn by then!" She looked at Huo Yunjing. "You’re in charge of teaching me!"
Huo Yunjing was full of confidence. "No problem!"
But once the lessons began, he realized he had severely underestimated Gu Qingyin’s capacity for destruction.
To start, Huo Yunjing gave a demonstration, explaining each step as he made a complete, three-layer cake from scratch—including the frosting and the chocolate decorations.
Gu Qingyin watched with intense focus, meticulously recording every single step in her notebook.
Yet when it came time for her to actually try, she got stuck on the very first step.
Separating the egg yolks. It took a full three hours, but Gu Qingyin finally managed to successfully separate five yolks.
Huo Yunjing mentioned there were tools designed for the task, but Gu Qingyin’s stubborn streak flared up. She refused to use them, insisting on doing it with a spoon.
Three hours and a large basin full of ruined eggs later.
The head chef was stunned when he saw the mess. Left with no other choice, he prepared an all-egg feast for dinner that night.
Step two: Add butter, flour, milk, and granulated sugar to the yolks, then mix.
Gu Qingyin was perhaps a little too enthusiastic. She failed to control her strength and shattered the glass bowl with her very first stir.
More than three hours of painstaking labor, gone in an instant.
Huo Yunjing said, "...It’s okay. Let’s try again. We have experience now, so I’m sure we can separate the yolks much faster this time."
Gu Qingyin was completely deflated. She threw down her utensils. "Forget it. I’ll learn tomorrow."
Huo Yunjing started to persuade her to try again, but he caught the flash of an electric arc on Gu Qingyin’s body and immediately clamped his mouth shut.
’My wife is in a bad mood,’ he thought. ’I’d better keep quiet.’
Gu Qingyin was in a funk all night and barely slept. But after cultivating for an hour in the morning, she had her confidence back.
’I’m a genius! I can definitely master something as simple as a cake!’
Huo Yunjing had a bad feeling about this.
And sure enough, the result of Gu Qingyin’s renewed fighting spirit wasn’t rapid progress, but a dramatic increase in the number of ruined eggs.
Gu Qingyin stood before the kitchen island, took a deep breath, and held out her hand. "Five more eggs!"
Huo Yunjing cautiously studied her expression. "Honey, the eggs... we’re out."
Gu Qingyin: "..."
"I’ve already sent someone to buy more," Hua Xin said, gently trying to dissuade her from the side. "Madam, if it’s really not working out, perhaps you shouldn’t force yourself."
Huo Yunjing gave a small, silent nod of agreement.
Gu Qingyin wasn’t ready to give up. "But it looks so simple!"
Hua Xin pressed her lips together to keep from laughing. "Talent is a funny thing. Some things look easy, but no matter how hard you try, you just can’t seem to get them right."
"No!" Gu Qingyin declared, as if taking an oath. "I absolutely have to make it!"
Huo Yunjing sighed.
Hua Xin worriedly rubbed her stomach.
One could only imagine the huge proportion of their diet that would be composed of eggs for the next few days.
