Chapter 140: Chapter 139: Not to be Messed With

In the afternoon, Gu Qingyin was in the living room watching cartoons with Gugu.

Huo Xingjie was huddled in the attic, hungry, thirsty, and terrified.

The White Immortal was getting sick and tired of him. ’He’s occupying my territory and won’t stop muttering to himself. It’s so noisy!’

If it weren’t for the fact that his past offerings had been reasonably sincere, it would have thrown him out long ago.

It wasn’t until dusk that there was a stir at the villa’s entrance. Gugu’s mother, wearing exquisite makeup and looking utterly exhausted, walked in slowly. "Draw me a hot bath. I need a soak!"

After speaking, she started to yawn, but the yawn died halfway, stifled by fright.

’What is Gu Qingyin doing in my house?! What does she want?’

By then, Gugu had grown tired of watching and had taken Mao Mao back to the small study to play with her toys.

Only Gu Qingyin was in the living room. The butler and maids were nowhere to be found, so Xiao Qin couldn’t even find someone to ask what was going on.

"You’re back?" Gu Qingyin asked lightly, acting like the lady of the house. "Have you had dinner?"

Xiao Qin was completely baffled. She answered cautiously, "Not yet..." She awkwardly touched her hair. "Please, have a seat, Madam. I’ve been running around all day, so I’ll just go wash up first."

Gu Qingyin gave a slight nod.

Xiao Qin walked past Gu Qingyin carefully and ascended the stairs with a composed expression. The moment she reached the landing, she couldn’t hold back anymore and broke into a run.

’That fucking idiot Huo Xingjie!’

Back in the bedroom, Xiao Qin started looking for him. At first, she thought he wasn’t home, but then she found Huo Xingjie’s smashed phone in the bathroom. She fell silent for two seconds, then turned and left the room.

In the attic, Huo Xingjie had been reduced to tears.

He had no idea how he’d made it through the better part of the day. No phone, no food, no water. It felt like he’d been thrown into solitary confinement, except he had locked himself in! The worst part was, as miserable as he felt, he didn’t dare to leave.

The instant the attic lock turned, Huo Xingjie’s entire body went rigid. He stared ahead in terror. When the door pushed open, it was no exaggeration to say his heart leaped into his throat. He was terrified it would be Huo Yunjing’s ghostly face.

"What are you doing?"

Huo Xingjie’s ears were ringing. It took him a moment to realize it wasn’t Huo Yunjing, it was Xiao Qin! He let out a breath, immensely relieved. But relief quickly gave way to anger.

He shot to his feet. "You’re asking me what I’m doing? I should be asking you! Where were you last night? Why did a man answer when I called you? Are you fucking cheating on me?!"

Xiao Qin rolled her eyes. "There’s no need to air this dirty laundry, is there? As if you haven’t cheated on me plenty?" She waved a dismissive hand. "Let’s talk business first. What’s the situation downstairs?"

Huo Xingjie knew he was in the wrong. After all, though they had agreed they could both play around, they weren’t supposed to cross that final line. He had broken the promise first, so he really had no ground to stand on.

He cleared his throat and recounted his ordeal from the day. The more he spoke, the more panicked he became, unable to shake the feeling that Huo Yunjing was watching him from the shadows.

"The White Immortal should have a solution, right?" Huo Xingjie asked nervously.

Xiao Qin frowned. Just as she was about to speak, a child-like voice rang out, "No can do."

The couple, pale with fright, threw their arms around each other, nearly screaming out loud.

’Knowing there was a ghost in the house, hearing a child’s voice suddenly pipe up in the dim attic when they thought they were the only two people there... Shit, the mere thought was enough to scare them to death!’

"So gutless, and you still want to worship a household god!" the child-like voice said, a hint of anger in it. "Idiots! A pair of idiots!"

The couple exchanged a look. Xiao Qin asked hesitantly, "White Immortal?"

A small hedgehog stood up from a corner and walked out on its hind legs.

Hearing the sound, the couple’s gazes shifted downwards and fell upon the bizarre scene. For a moment, they were both speechless.

This was the first time they had seen the White Immortal’s true form. Although they knew it was a hedgehog, the reality was a far cry from their imagination. It wasn’t domineering or majestic at all; in fact, it was comically cute.

To put it in a single word: disillusionment.

"White Immortal," Huo Xingjie was the first to snap out of it. "You have to save us! In the house..." he said urgently.

"Shut up!" the White Immortal shrieked, its voice rising in volume. The once child-like tone became shrill and piercing to the ear.

Not only did Huo Xingjie shut his mouth, he also wanted to rub his ears, but he didn’t dare.

Xiao Qin let go of him and knelt before the White Immortal. "Great Immortal, please help us."

The White Immortal looked at the child it had watched over since she was little and sighed helplessly. "It’s not that I don’t want to help you. It’s that I’m... not strong enough."

Xiao Qin looked astonished. "White Immortal?"

The hedgehog dropped to its front paws, admitting rather sheepishly, "I’ve already promised them I’d return Gugu’s voice."

"Them?" Xiao Qin quickly seized on the key word. "A woman and a male ghost?"

"Yes. That human and that ghost... either one of them..." the White Immortal said, ashamed. "I can’t beat either one of them."

Hearing this, Xiao Qin and Huo Xingjie looked at each other, seeing the shock in each other’s eyes.

Once the reality of the situation sank in, Xiao Qin quickly took out her phone and called Old Madam Huo. The news sent a great shock through the old matriarch as well.

’Gu Qingyin isn’t just some ordinary person! No wonder... No wonder!’

’Huo Yunzheng suddenly losing his five senses, Huo Yunjing dead for ten years and still not reincarnated, and Gugu! Everything, it all makes sense now!’

"Grandma, what do we do now?"

’What to do?’ Old Madam Huo wanted to ask the same question.

Gu Qingyin’s situation was completely beyond her imagination. She was just an ordinary person; how could she fight Gu Qingyin? Her greatest trump card was the White Immortal, but now it was clear she couldn’t rely on it.

"Don’t provoke her for now. Let her do whatever she wants," Old Madam Huo said gravely. "...I need to think this through."

After the call ended, silence fell over the attic. It was broken when the White Immortal turned and walked toward the spirit tablet. Its small body leaped lightly onto the offering table, then slowly faded, merging into the tablet.

The couple came to their senses and exchanged a look, then left the attic without another word.

That evening, the little family had the warmest dinner they had ever experienced.

Huo Xingjie and Xiao Qin were incredibly enthusiastic, and their attitude toward Gugu had improved by more than just a little.

Gugu was overwhelmed by the attention. She instinctively scooted closer to Gu Qingyin, as if afraid of being tainted by something dirty.

Seeing this, the couple’s smiles didn’t waver, but inwardly they were cursing her for being so ungrateful.

How could Gu Qingyin not see what they were thinking? But she said nothing, giving them the cold shoulder. Besides eating, her only action was to place Gugu’s favorite foods onto her plate.

After dinner, Gu Qingyin went with Gugu to her room. Once Gugu was asleep, Huo Yunjing appeared and went to the attic to bring down the White Immortal.

Gu Qingyin glanced at it and urged softly, "Let’s begin."
