Chapter 685 Four Pillars: To Kill with a Borrowed Knife
Chapter 685 Four Pillars: To Kill with a Borrowed Knife
Pushing his stats to what he considered to be the general limit for his strength, Valyr went ahead and infused his mana into the arquebus before firing his shot.
Bang!
With the flame he conjured making contact with the bit of gunpowder on the small bowl, the bullet zoomed forward at great speeds as a faint explosion accompanied its journey.
“…” Of course, with how quiet the area had become due to Valyr’s command, the quadrant leader instantly looked in the direction of the explosion, wanting to know where it had come from.
Unfortunately, just as it had turned its head around to look at where the young man was positioned, the bullet had swiftly pierced through the quadrant leader’s forehead.
Swoosh!
With it still having lots of momentum contained within, the bullet found no difficulty in passing through the other side, causing the quadrant leader to go wide-eyed as it was left wondering what had happened.
Thud.
With a dark red number boasting six digits gradually appearing above its head, the quadrant leader’s body began to tip backwards, eventually falling on its back as it kicked up a bit of dust.
“Huh. That worked better than I thought.”
Staring at the fallen quadrant leader for a bit, Valyr quickly stored the arquebus and the other things he had taken out to arm it back into his spatial bracelet.
Then, without hesitation, he jumped down from the building once more.
However, this time, he jumped in the direction that led him closer to the quadrant leader.
Fwoosh!
Thud.
Conjuring a quick gust of wind to negate most of the speed he had gathered from the fall, Valyr deftly landed on both of his feet as he slowly made his way to the fallen quadrant leader.
“I hope the quadrant leader begins the second phase soon.” Inching closer towards the quadrant leader, this thought popped up in the young man’s mind.
“It would be a waste if the buffs I activated expired before then, after all.”
Continuing to move closer to where the quadrant leader fell, the young man thought back to the shot he had fired just now.
‘Now that I think about it, aside from utilizing [Descent of the True Wyvern], there’s still one more thing I could do to improve its damage,’ thought Valyr to himself.
Of course, Valyr was talking about reforging the arquebus using [Breath of Beginnings].
After all, compared to the [Breath of Calm] he had used to forge the arquebus, [Breath of Beginnings] increased the weapon’s Attack stat even further by a significant amount.
Aside from that, it also allowed the weapon to obtain another innate skill, such as what had happened after he forged his chestplate using the [Breath of Beginnings].
Though, whether or not the weapon would need an input of materials to obtain another skill was something he would have to find out for himself.
Nevertheless, since the downside of it having a long cooldown was greatly mitigated by the dilation of time within the inheritance, reforging every piece of equipment he owned was definitely a viable option.
‘It’s a shame that I could only use it later in the evening,’ thought the young man, pushing the thought to the side as he arrived in front of the quadrant leader.
As he had taken a bit of time to arrive where the quadrant leader had fallen, a barrier of mana had already enveloped its body, prompting Valyr to understand that the second phase was on its way.
Utilizing [Superior Analysis] to stay updated on the quadrant leader’s progress to reaching the second phase, the young man proceeded to distance himself from it.
Feeling like the distance between him and the quadrant leader was more than enough for him to react to any move it might make, Valyr stayed where he stood as the quadrant leader eventually stood up once more.
“Grraaaaaggghhh!!!”
With its skin taking on a faint shade of red like the north quadrant leader, the east quadrant leader let out a rage-filled bellow as it took notice of Valyr’s presence.
For a brief moment, the quadrant leader stood in place as it stared at the young man, pondering for a bit as to why a human would appear before it out of nowhere.
Fortunately, it did not take long for it to recall what had transpired earlier, prompting it to focus all of its rage towards Valyr.
“Graaaaggghhhh!!!”
Charging towards where Valyr stood, the quadrant leader released a great portion of mana from its body, conjuring all of them into a small group of crimson red bolts.
Whoosh! Whoosh! Whoosh!
“[Arcane Shadow Serpent Combat Style]…” Watching these crimson red bolts zoomed through the air, Valyr had a calm expression on his face as he retrieved the spear from his back.
“[Dark Arcane Mirror].”
Thud!
Whoosh!
Infusing both Shadow Energy and mana into the spear as he slammed the latter into the ground, a dark barrier swiftly appeared around the young man.
Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang!
Because of that, the bolts the quadrant leader had collided with the barrier rather than their intended target, causing a slight frown to briefly appear on the quadrant leader’s face.
However, just as it thought that the barrier would cause the bolts to disappear…
Whoosh! Whoosh! Whoosh! Whoosh!
At the very moment the crimson red bolts it had sent out made contact with the barrier, an identical set of bolts was sent out by the barrier, all of which headed towards the quadrant leader at a speed far faster than before.
Psh!
‘-25,861’
‘-26,148’
‘-25,447’
‘-25,173’
Though the quadrant leader saw how the bolts it sent were sent back at it, the speed at which the bolts were sent did not allow the quadrant leader to react in time, causing all of them to land true on multiple parts of its body.
“Grraaaaggghhh!!!”
Circulating the mana within its body to dispel the energy within the bolts that attacked it, the quadrant leader looked at the young man behind the barrier with rage-filled eyes, the intent to kill more than palpable.
“[Superior Analysis].” Seeing that the barrier he set up could still withstand a couple more attacks from the quadrant leader, Valyr decided not to dispel it for the meantime as he took another look at his opponent’s current state.
Ding!

‘Since their appearances are similar, I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that their stats would be similar as well.’
Looking at the status screen in front of him, Valyr briefly glanced at his opponent, who was currently occupied with dispelling the crimson red bolts that were sent back at him.
Returning his attention back to the status screen, Valyr gradually noticed a certain part of the status screen that seemed odd.
‘Huh. The Intent didn’t upgrade.’
Recalling his fight with the north quadrant leader, Valyr could still remember that its Intent had improved by a tier, considering that the Intent went from encompassing balance to greater balance.
In fact, that small factoid plagued his mind earlier as he thought about how his fight with the other quadrant leaders would unfold, considering that their Intents started off at a far higher grade.
‘Does that mean I don’t have to worry about its Intent getting any stronger during the third phase?’ asked Valyr to himself, scratching the back of his head in slight confusion.
Just as he was about to ponder over the idea for a bit, the quadrant leader had finally dispelled all of the bolts sent back at it, allowing it to send another wave of attacks towards the young man.
“Grraaaaaaaggghhhh!!!”
Flaring its aura in its entirety, Valyr gradually began to feel that all of the mana within the quadrant leader’s vicinity had become an extension of itself, causing the young man’s expression to turn solemn.
“Intent of Mana, huh.”
Swoosh!
Utilizing the Intent it had comprehended, the quadrant leader combined the mana within its body with the energy of its Intent, allowing the energy to ascend to a higher level of power.
Then, redirecting all of this energy to a point above its head, a spike made out of crimson red energy began to form, growing in size with every passing second.
“This barrier is definitely going to break under that attack.” Watching the quadrant leader’s wrath come into form, Valyr made up his mind as the quadrant leader finally sent the spike towards the former.
Swoosh!
With the amount of energy contained within the spike, the attack zoomed through the air at breakneck speeds, colliding with the barrier in a matter of seconds.
Staring at the barrier and seeing how it began to bend under the force of the large spike, a faint cruel grin appeared on the quadrant leader’s lips as it thought about how it would end the human’s life in a single attack.
However…
“[Shadow Warp].”
Whoosh!
At the very moment the barrier began to crumble, Valyr disappeared within the barrier, transforming into a blur of Shadow Energy as it disappeared from the quadrant leader’s field of vision.
Then, not long after the young man’s disappearance, the crimson red spike began to turn around in direction as it seemingly changed its target to the quadrant leader.
Realizing this, the quadrant leader began to set up defenses against the spike since it knew how much energy it had put into it.
But before it could even conjure a simple barrier…
“[Shadow Serpent Magic Style]…”
“[Memento Mori].”
Whoosh!
‘-13,533’
Out of nowhere, the surroundings around the quadrant leader had become muted in color as an insidious and dark energy began to cover every inch of its body.
In an instant, a great wave of pain washed over the quadrant leader as it watched the crimson red spike get closer.
“Grrrhhh…!!!” Not wanting the crimson red spike to land on its body at all costs, the quadrant leader attempted to conjure a defense against once more, only to find out that its body had turned immobile due to the energy.
“Hey there.”
Whoosh!
Just as it began to fear what looked to be the inevitable, a being had appeared before the quadrant leader, causing the fear it felt from the crimson red spike to turn into an inordinate amount of rage as it stared daggers at the young man.
“Just so you know, my reasons for fighting you isn’t because I hate you or anything.” Maintaining a smile on his face, Valyr conversed with the quadrant leader as he brandished his spear.
“If I were to blame it onto something…”
“Then that would be the ones who made you in the first place.”
“[Arcane Shadow Serpent Combat Style].”
“[Strike of the Lightless Arcane]!”
Bang!
‘-116,320!!!’
Taking a strike directly to the face without any defense whatsoever, the quadrant leader’s senses had become greatly disoriented, feeling as if it was on the verge of losing its consciousness.
However, it held on, relying on its sheer will to remain conscious as it knew that its current state wouldn’t last long.
Fortunately, its tenacity was rewarded as its consciousness gradually returned to its previous state.
Though, as if the world was making a mockery of its actions…
The crimson red spike had finally landed on its body.
Bang!
‘-170,752!’
…
…
…
