Chapter 1639: Breaking Barriers: The Final Trial (8)

’…It’s not… what I think it is, right?’ asked Ataraxia soon after, voicing out the idea that had just popped up in his mind related to the matter.

’…’

However, rather than respond to the young man’s question, Valyr merely remained silent even after the former was done.

Though, with how the two of them shared both senses and thoughts with one another, it did not take long for Ataraxia to understand what his other self was trying to tell him.

’…Seriously?’

’…Yeah.’ Valyr faintly nodded, his bitter expression all the more tangible to him through their shared connection. ’I don’t know the exact specifics, but the two races were able to destroy a great chunk of humanity’s defensive lines.’

’…And just because I know you’d ask about it, the orcs and elves destroyed around 30% of the defensive lines in one go.’

“Hiss…” Sucking in a breath of cold air in response to the young man’s words, the gears in Ataraxia’s mind turned for a bit as he pondered over his next course of action now that he had this piece of information.

’Should I…’

’…Enlist to be a part of the frontlines after you’re done with the inheritance?’ Valyr finished his train of thought, his tone already telling Ataraxia his other self’s thought on the matter. ’I wouldn’t do that if I were you.’

’Aside from the fact that our side is still in the midst of reclaiming the ground we lost against the orcs and the elves, the two races didn’t just stop at destroying those defensive lines that one time.’

’If anything, that incident only marked the beginning.’

Letting out a soft exhale, Valyr continued, ’According to Mystia, after that incident, the two races continued to aim for the other defensive lines after that, reduce the number of defensive lines to a quarter of what it originally was before our side finally began its retaliation.’

’Though they’ve been able to bring the number of defensive lines back to around half of what it was, it won’t surprise me if they make you fight until your worth has been fully extracted in the battlefield.’

’But you’re enlisted in the frontlines, though?’ said Ataraxia after that, giving the young man the feeling that he was looking at him in confusion. ’I mean… sure, you were able to leave the frontlines because your rank was at the level where it was possible.’

’However, considering that our defenses have been breached to that degree, wouldn’t they have called for everyone to temporarily bolster the frontlines’ defenses?’

Unexpectedly, Valyr let out a chuckle in response to the question.

’Funny you should say that.’

’…?’

’I asked Mystia the same question you just asked me the moment she shared that piece of information with me. You know what her response was?’

’What did she say?’

’As the champion of Algerie Kingdom’s Myriad Prodigies Tournament, my mandatory enlistment to the frontlines was waived,’ said Valyr, giving Ataraxia a bit of time to digest his words after that.

’In fact, everyone in the tournament that had gotten a free pass to attend the tournament at the empire had their mandatory enlistment to the frontlines waived.’

’…Does it mainly have something to do with the Nine Heavenly Pillars?’ asked the latter after giving it a bit of thought, feeling like it was the only valid reason he could come up with that could explain the entire thing.

’Bingo.’ Valyr nodded, his movements shared through [Soul Entanglement]. ’From what Mystia told me, the force the military was able to summon to the frontlines is already enough to reclaim all of the lost territory back.’

’Though, with the looming threat of the orcs and the elves rendering their efforts futile, what the frontlines need more are people that could serve as spiritual pillars the people could put their faith into.’

’I see.’ At that point, Ataraxia more or less understood everything he needed to know.

However, after pondering over it for a bit more, another question popped up in his mind. ’Say, Valyr. If we were to exclude the fact that heading to the frontlines right now is a bad idea, do you think the guild could use the frontlines to establish a greater foundation?’

’It definitely could,’ replied Valyr, his tone showing the young man that he had no doubt towards the idea whatsoever.

Though, not even a few seconds later, his tone was replaced with apprehension. ’…But if you recall how long it took for players to join the frontlines during the war back then, don’t you think there’s the possibility of the war taking a turn for the worse?’

As his other self’s question lingered in his mind, Ataraxia gave the entire situation of the war thus far a bit of thought.

Considering that the two of them had shared all their memories up until they were separated by Adam and Eve, it went without saying that the young man had a good idea of how the war unfolded and transformed into what it was today.

Unsurprisingly, with Valyr nudging the tides of war to be more in humanity’s favor, he felt that the most prominent turning point of the war was when the former shared the existence of the arquebus to the frontlines, increasing the overall combat power of the frontlines while decreasing the requirements needed to enter.

Giving the idea a bit more thought, the young man eventually felt that the introduction of the arquebus was the final straw that broke the camel’s back.

After all, if all of the humans at the frontlines were equipped with an arquebus, then that meant the orcs and the elves would have to be cautious with their actions, especially if they didn’t want to incur the wrath of over thousands of arquebuses being shot at them at once.

And thus, the two races decided to approach the threat of the arquebuses with the simplest choice available to them.

…Which was to distract the humans from using their arquebuses as long as possible by redirecting their attention elsewhere.

’On second thought, I’ll think about the idea again after I get out of the inheritance.’

Spending a bit more time mulling over his current train of thought, Ataraxia eventually said these words to Valyr through their connection, prompting the latter to smile in amusement in return.

’I guess that means we’re going to tackle the last two skills, then.’

’Yeah.’ Ataraxia nodded in agreement, bringing up the information the pedestals sent him on the two remaining skills he had yet to practice in his mind. ’Once I’m able to make use of the skills, I’ll see how my comprehension stacks up against the pedestals after that.’

’…And if you reach the limit of the fifth trial on your first try?’

Ataraxia chuckled at the question.

’Then that just means we’ll go beyond the limit before the trial ends.’
