Chapter 1634: Breaking Barriers: The Final Trial (3)
“Out of the five slots I’ve been given, I think it’s for the best if I allocate two of them towards the concepts.”
As the gears in his mind began to turn, pondering over which of the marks he should focus on comprehending, the young man briefly glanced at Aeramis as he began to mutter out the thoughts lingering in his mind.
“Although it wasn’t obvious at first, I’ve realized that all the abilities Aeramis allowed me to choose from relied on two concepts in order to achieve their level of power.”
“Among the three concepts, two could be used in both combat and movement, while the last one is used purely for support.”
“The Force of Raging Tempests, the Force of Flickering Lightning, and the Force of Tranquil Winds,” murmured the young man to himself, forcing the gears in his mind to turn even faster as he felt himself inch closer towards the answer.
“Throughout the six abilities, almost all of them make use of the Force of Tranquil Winds, with only one out of the two offensive abilities on the list making use of the first two Forces.”
“On the other hand, the usage of the first two Forces are pretty much evenly split between the six abilities.”
“Hmm…” Closing his eyes as he gave the matter a bit more thought, the young man began to sat cross-legged on the ground as he pondered over which of the abilities he should choose to comprehend, and by extension the concepts he had to comprehend as well.
Thankfully, with the purpose of each ability more or less laid out in front of him thanks to the brief glances he had taken into each mark, Ataraxia eventually made up his mind on which five marks he would choose out of the nine.
“For the concepts, I’ll choose the Force of Raging Tempests and the Force of Tranquil Winds,” said the young man, his voice now loud enough for Aeramis to clearly hear.
“As for the abilities…”
Scratching the back of his head for a bit, the young man’s expression slowly turned into that of steadfast conviction. “I’ll go with the [Art of Greater Momentum], [Fleeting Light], and [Eye of the Storm].”
“Quite the interesting choice,” said Aeramis in response as he made his way to where Ataraxia sat.
Smiling in amusement, he then asked, “What’s your reason in making those choices?”
“Well…” Standing up to look at Aeramis in the eye, the young man then proceeded to go into a bit of detail as to why he had chosen those concepts and abilities.
Aside from the fact that the two concepts he had chosen would give him an easier time comprehending the essence of the three abilities, the three abilities he chose actually covered a few of the aspects in his combat style that he felt were lacking.
Although his [Fleeting Arcane Scripture] already gave him the confidence and the ability to move through the battlefield at breakneck speeds, considering how often he fought against beings that were far stronger than him, he felt that taking [Art of Greater Momentum] and [Fleeting Light] was a good choice.
Being the first skill he had focused his attention on, [Art of Greater Momentum] was a passive skill that not only increased the efficacy of his movement skills, but it also reduced the energy needed to activate them.
On the other hand, [Fleeting Light] was a movement skill that solely focused on escape, giving him the ability to distance himself from his opponent as far as possible the moment the fight was inevitable.
With these two skills, as well as his own personal skill working together, he was confident that he could control the tempo of the battle to his liking as much as he wanted.
As for [Eye of the Storm], it was an offensive skill that made full use of the two Forces’ properties to achieve an attack that covered a far larger range than any of his more powerful attacks.
Considering that almost all of his offensive spells thus far leaned more towards instances where he fought against a single enemy, he felt that [Eye of the Storm] would alleviate his ability to deal wide-range damage…
Until he created his personal AoE spell, that is.
“Do you think you’d be able to peer into the essence of the marks you’ve chosen?”
By the time Ataraxia was done with his explanation, Aeramis asked him a question that briefly made him think twice over his selection of marks.
Though, rather than let that brief feeling of doubt fester and consume him, he instead asked the man a question of his own in return.
“Is there a limit to how much time I can spend comprehending each one?”
“You…” Though he let out a slightly exasperated sigh at first, the man soon let out a brief cackle as he looked at the young man, the latter’s response truly unexpected to him.
“I guess that specific frame of mind is the reason why you’ve been able to arrive near, if not reach the limits of the trials I’ve thrown at you.”
Swoosh!
As those words left his mouth, Aeramis went ahead and released a bit of his energy into the surroundings, infusing it with his thoughts in order to form a barrier that surrounded both Ataraxia and the nine pedestals.
Then, after infusing it with more of his energy to make it stable, he went ahead and infused some of his concepts into it, causing the young man to pause for a bit as he noticed that there was now a delay between the thoughts he and Valyr shared through [Soul Entanglement].
’Wait… could it be…?’
Not taking long to realize what was going on, Ataraxia looked at the man with a slightly surprised face, who returned the shocked reaction with a knowing smile in return.
“Though I don’t know the exact reason why you’re only spending a brief amount of time in each trial, I have a strong feeling that you have a good reason for doing so.”
Tapping on the barrier for a bit, he continued, “As long as you’re within the confines of this barrier, three days of comprehension would be equivalent to one day of comprehension outside the inheritance.”
Hearing the explanation the man gave him, the young man looked at him for a bit longer, the shocked reaction he initially had still plastered on his face.
Though, after a while, he eventually snapped back to reality, prompting him to give Aeramis a smile of gratitude as he felt his heart warm up from his actions.
“…Thank you.”
