Chapter 1604: Breaking Barriers: The Second Trial (7)
“So far, so good…”
Watching Ataraxia’s third and final attempt on the second trial with a solemn expression, Aeramis faintly let out a sigh of relief after seeing the young man easily zoom past the trial’s 200-point mark.
Whoosh! Whoosh!
Having gotten enough rest while planning out his course of action for his final attempt, Ataraxia calmly looked at the next set of 10 beams he had to dodge, taking note that only half of them made contact with a certain part of his body.
Ignoring all of the beams that would not make contact with him after the transformation, the young man quickly formulated a movement in his mind that would allow him to dodge all beams in one motion, executing it the moment the blue beams turned red.
Whoosh! Whoosh!
Exerting superb control over his body, the young man was able to avoid all of the beams of the 201st set, allowing him to set up the foundations that would propel him to the next threshold of the trial.
Then again, with him having already gained experience in reaching the second threshold in his first attempt, Ataraxia found no problems in dodging all of the beams that spanned most of the next 300 points.
And that was even after he took into account the fact that the latter half had already begun to exceed the initial limit he had for the maximum number of beams he could dodge.
Of course, the only reason why he could still remain confident even after facing so many beams at once was due to the actual frequency of those beams making contact with his body.
In fact, as if the stars of fate had finally aligned in front of him, almost all of the sets he had to dodge only had around half of the number of beams make contact with his body, greatly reducing the difficulty of the trial for Ataraxia.
Nevertheless, there were still a couple of times during the attempt where he was close to wasting his efforts once again, especially during sets where over 90% of the beams decided to make contact with his body all of a sudden.
Fortunately, all of those beams occurred during the first half of his grind to 500 points, allowing Ataraxia to reach the 500-point mark without much problems.
“With 500 points under his belt, the next goal is 800,” murmured Aeramis, his expression still solemn as he continued to watch the young man swerve through all of the beams that threatened to hit him.
Inwardly hoping that the young man in front of him would exceed all his expectations and reach the limits of his trials once again, the man eventually witnessed Ataraxia clear the 550th set, putting the young man one step closer to reaching the trial’s limits.
Whoosh! Whoosh! Whoosh!
Then again, with him now having to face 24 red beams if he weren’t careful, the young man paid more attention to the blue beams this time, taking a bit more time to imprint their trajectories in his mind before drafting a course of action.
Thankfully, with his prior planning before the attempt, as well as his heightened reaction speed thanks to the Extended Title he received, Ataraxia was able to continue going through the sets.
In just a few minutes after the 550th set, the young man was able to clear the 600th set with relative ease.
Then, around 15 minutes after clearing the 600th set, Ataraxia was able to push his progress to the 700th set, with luck shining on his side as only 40% of the beams made contact with him during that set.
For reference, getting past the 700th set needed him to survive the threat of 30 beams coming for him.
Inwardly praying that luck continued to shine down on him as he inched closer and closer to the trial’s limit, the young man continued to blast through the sets, slowly increasing the number of beams to a number even Aeramis did not dare to take on at once.
Yet, against all odds, Ataraxia still remained standing.
“The 800th set.”
Sending out a bit of his energy into the surroundings as 34 lasers began to charge up, Aeramis briefly felt his scalp tingle as he wondered how many of the beams would actually make contact with the young man’s body in his 800th set.
Whoosh! Whoosh! Whoosh!
Watching the blue beams light up one by one, the man eventually sucked in a breath of cold air, seeing that 80% of the beams would make contact with Ataraxia’s body.
With him not taking that long to calculate how many beams the young man had to dodge, Aeramis soon let out a slightly defeated sigh, knowing that the former had already done the best he could.
“It’s over,” he murmured to himself, faintly shaking his head.
“There’s no way to avoid that.”
Though this realization crushed his hopes of witnessing an inheritor that pushed all his trials to their utmost limits, the man still felt a sense of satisfaction in the fact that Ataraxia was the most talented inheritor he had ever received.
’Although it’s a shame he wouldn’t be able to upgrade the special title I’ve given him, I’ll probably compensate for that by the end of the inheritance,’ thought Aeramis, having already prepared himself to block all of the red beams that Ataraxia might miss.
Thus, as he watched the latter take note of all the blue beams in his surroundings, the man remained calm as the 34 blue beams surrounding Ataraxia eventually turned into red ones.
However, just as he was about to block the beams that the young man missed…
Whoosh!
All of a sudden, Ataraxia employed a tactic Aeramis wasn’t expecting from him, making use of his heightened movement speed, as well as a movement spell to reach a part of the box that did not have any of the beams crossing it whatsoever.
“What…”
To no surprise, this action thoroughly left the man at an utter loss for words, considering that the thought of employing such an action during the trial had never even crossed his mind.
Yet, just as he thought that the young man would only make use of such an action once, Ataraxia continued to repeat the movement after confirming that the number of beams he faced exceeded the maximum number of beams he could dodge.
And with that, it did not take long for the young man to obtain a thousand points, reaching the limit of the second trial.
…Though, just not with the method Aeramis was expecting from him.
