Chapter 126: Love Hurts

  • Next Chapter

COST: DILLAN RUREN FORGOT WHY HE LOVED HER.

Dillan stared at the notification.

The chamber had gone silent.

Even the open doors seemed frozen.

The little girl beneath the oak tree held the flower crown against her chest.

The One Who Stays stood beside Dillan, her hand still gripping his arm.

"Don't go in," she whispered.

Dillan looked at her.

"You said I forgot why I loved you."

Her eyes trembled.

"Yes."

"Then tell me."

She shook her head.

"That memory belongs to you."

"Then why are you afraid of me recovering it?"

Her fingers slowly loosened.

"Because love isn't always gentle when it returns."

Dillan stepped toward the doorway.

The girl inside looked up.

"You're late."

He stopped.

"How long have you been waiting?"

The child counted on her fingers.

"One day."

She paused.

"Then one year."

Another pause.

"Then I stopped counting."

Dillan's chest tightened.

He entered the room.

The moment his foot crossed the threshold, the door vanished.

The Girl Beneath the Oak

The room transformed into a summer afternoon.

Sunlight filtered through the oak tree.

Young Dillan sat in the grass, holding a broken toy.

The girl sat beside him.

She had long, pale hair and gentle eyes.

But her face remained blurred.

"Why don't you play with the others?" young Dillan asked.

The girl shrugged.

"They don't see me."

"Why?"

"I don't know."

Young Dillan looked toward Sasha and Aurelia, who were playing near the stream.

They couldn't see the girl.

Dillan frowned.

"Then I'll see you."

The girl looked at him.

"Even when you grow up?"

"Yes."

"Even when you make new friends?"

"Yes."

"Even when you fall in love?"

Young Dillan's face reddened.

"I won't."

The girl giggled.

"You're lying."

He crossed his arms.

"Then I'll love everyone."

The girl's smile faded.

"Everyone?"

Young Dillan nodded.

"Nobody should be alone."

The girl lowered her head.

"That sounds painful."

"Why?"

"Because you can't hold everyone."

Young Dillan thought about it.

Then he took her hand.

"Then I'll make somewhere big enough."

The memory fractured.

Dillan watched from within it.

He remembered the feeling.

Not romantic love.

Not obsession.

Something simpler.

A child's desperate tenderness toward the first person who had ever made his loneliness feel understood.

He had loved her because she stayed when everyone else failed to notice she existed.

And she had loved him because he saw her.

The scene changed.

The girl placed the flower crown on his head.

"Give me a name."

Young Dillan smiled.

"Why?"

"So you'll remember me."

"I already do."

"People forget."

"Not me."

She touched his cheek.

"Then promise."

Young Dillan lifted his little finger.

"I promise."

The memory turned crimson.

The System appeared.

MEMORY COLLISION DETECTED.EMOTIONAL FOUNDATION: LOVE.SECONDARY FOUNDATION: FEAR OF LOSS.PRESERVATION INSTINCT: ACTIVATING.

Dillan reached toward the younger version of himself.

"Stop!"

But the memory continued.

Young Dillan stood before the Core.

The girl was fading.

He held her hand.

"Please don't go."

She smiled.

"I don't want to."

"Then stay!"

"I can't."

Dillan watched his younger self's face collapse.

The girl pressed the flower crown into his hands.

"Give me a name."

Young Dillan screamed.

The Core opened.

The girl vanished into the light.

And Dillan made his first choice.

Not to save her.

Not entirely.

He chose to preserve the possibility of her existence.

But the mechanism demanded a price.

His memory.

His ability to remember why she mattered.

The System displayed:

PRESERVATION SUCCESSFUL.EMOTIONAL MEMORY SEALED.SUBJECT: THE ONE WHO STAYS.HOST MAY CONTINUE WITHOUT GRIEF.

Dillan's eyes filled with tears.

"Without grief…"

The girl appeared beside him.

Older now.

The One Who Stays.

"I thought if you forgot the pain, you could live."

Dillan turned toward her.

"But you forgot that I loved you."

She lowered her gaze.

"I know."

"Did you want me to remember?"

Her answer came quietly.

"Every day."

The Memory's Consequence

The chamber began collapsing.

Outside, Sasha shouted his name.

"DILLAN!"

He looked toward the fading doorway.

The One Who Stays remained beside him.

"Go."

Dillan didn't move.

"What happens if I recover everything?"

She smiled.

"You'll remember loving me."

"And?"

"You'll remember abandoning me."

"And?"

Her smile disappeared.

"You'll remember that you chose to forget me."

Dillan felt the weight of those words settle inside him.

He had wanted the truth.

Now the truth stood before him.

Not as a monster.

Not as an enemy.

As someone he had loved…

and left behind.

Dillan held out his hand.

"I can't change what I did."

"No."

"But I can stop pretending it didn't happen."

The One Who Stays stared at his hand.

Then she took it.

The room shattered.

The Name

Dillan returned to the chamber.

Everyone was waiting.

Sasha stood closest to the doorway.

Aurelia held Alina's hand.

Dana and Lyra watched the System.

Evelyn stood beside The One Who Stays.

Dillan looked at the woman beside him.

"I remember why I loved you."

The room went still.

The One Who Stays closed her eyes.

"And?"

Dillan's voice was quiet.

"Because you were the first person who made me feel seen."

Her lips trembled.

"But I won't use that memory to claim you."

The System appeared.

EMOTIONAL MEMORY RESTORED.OWNERSHIP IMPULSE: REJECTED.WITNESS AUTHORITY: STABLE.

The One Who Stays lowered her head.

For the first time, she looked relieved.

Then the seventh door slammed shut.

A deep sound rolled through the chamber.

The System flickered.

FIRST LOCK: PARTIALLY RESTORED.SECOND LOCK: FORCED OPENING DETECTED.SOURCE: SASHA RUREN.

Sasha's eyes widened.

"What?"

A red mark appeared across her palm.

She stared at it.

Then whispered:

"I didn't open anything."

From behind her, a child's voice answered.

"You did when you chose him."

Sasha turned.

The Abandoned Self stood in the doorway.

But this time…

he wasn't looking at Dillan.

He was looking at Sasha.

Sasha stood perfectly still.

The Abandoned Self watched her from the doorway.

His small fingers were wrapped around the broken wooden toy.

"Dillan," he said.

Dillan stepped toward him.

"What is it?"

The child pointed at Sasha.

"Ask her."

Sasha's face had gone pale.

Dillan looked at her.

"Sasha?"

She didn't answer.

The red mark on her palm spread toward her wrist.

The System appeared.

SECOND LOCK: FORCED OPENING.SUBJECT: SASHA RUREN.RESTRICTED MEMORY: IDENTIFIED.ACCESS REQUIRES SUBJECT CONSENT.

Dillan immediately turned toward Sasha.

"Do you want to open it?"

Sasha stared at the notification.

Her breathing became uneven.

"No."

The System remained unchanged.

CONSENT: DENIED.LOCK REMAINS SEALED.

The red mark stopped spreading.

Sasha released a shaky breath.

Then the chamber's walls began to whisper.

Not the System.

Not the false creator.

Sasha's own voice.

"If you forget me, I'll still remember you."

Dillan looked at her.

"That's what you said before your Second Choice."

Sasha nodded.

"There was more."

"What more?"

She pressed her hand against her chest.

"I didn't only choose to save you."

Dillan's expression tightened.

"What did you choose?"

Sasha looked at the seven doors.

Then at the Abandoned Self.

"I chose what would happen if you tried to save me."

The Second Choice's Hidden Condition

A memory began forming in the center of the chamber.

Young Sasha stood before the Preservation Core.

Young Dillan was crying.

The Core pulsed between them.

Sasha placed her hand against it.

"Take me instead."

The memory paused.

Then rewound.

A different moment appeared.

Sasha was alone in the white room.

The One Who Stays stood across from her.

"You understand the consequence?" she asked.

Young Sasha nodded.

"If I enter the Core, Dillan will survive."

"That is only the first consequence."

Sasha looked toward the Core.

"What is the second?"

The One Who Stays answered:

"If he remembers you completely, he may try to destroy the mechanism."

Sasha's expression changed.

"And if he does?"

"The preservation structure will collapse."

"Then he mustn't remember everything."

The One Who Stays stared at her.

"You're choosing to limit his memory?"

Sasha looked down.

Her hands trembled.

"I'm choosing to let him live."

The memory returned to the chamber.

Dillan stood frozen.

Sasha looked at him.

"I knew you'd try to save me."

"You should have let me."

"I couldn't."

"You made that decision for me."

Her eyes filled with tears.

"Yes."

The admission hung between them.

No excuse.

No defense.

Just the truth.

Dillan looked away.

The Abandoned Self whispered:

"You both keep calling it love when you're afraid."

Sasha flinched.

Dillan closed his eyes.

The words hurt because they weren't entirely wrong.

The Lock That Loved Back

The second door began to open.

Red light spilled through its edges.

The System displayed:

SECOND LOCK: EMOTIONAL PRESERVATION.PRIMARY FUNCTION: PREVENT SUBJECT FROM REJECTING SACRIFICE.SECONDARY FUNCTION: MAINTAIN HOST SURVIVAL.HIDDEN CONDITION: SUBJECT SASHA RUREN MAY OVERRIDE THE LOCK.

Dillan turned toward Sasha.

"You can override it?"

Sasha stared at the door.

"Apparently."

"Then do it."

She shook her head.

"I don't know what will happen."

"Neither do I."

"That's not reassuring."

"It wasn't meant to be."

A faint laugh escaped her.

It vanished almost immediately.

Dillan stepped closer.

"Sasha, I won't ask you to sacrifice yourself again."

Her eyes met his.

"And if I choose to?"

"Then I'll respect your choice."

Sasha's expression tightened.

"Even if it destroys you?"

Dillan paused.

The old answer would have been immediate.

No.

He would have stopped her.

Forced her.

Begged her.

Chosen for her.

Instead, he said:

"I won't let fear decide what your choice means."

Sasha looked down at her palm.

The red mark began to glow.

The Memory Sasha Chose

Sasha stepped toward the second door.

The System displayed:

SUBJECT CONSENT REQUESTED.OPEN SECOND LOCK?

Dillan didn't move.

He waited.

Sasha looked at everyone.

Aurelia.

Alina.

Dana.

Lyra.

Evelyn.

The One Who Stays.

Then she looked at Dillan.

"I want to remember."

Dillan nodded.

"Then remember."

Sasha pressed her palm against the door.

The second lock opened.

A wave of crimson light swept through the chamber.

Everyone saw the same memory.

Sasha standing inside the Preservation Core.

Dillan was outside.

His hand was pressed against the barrier.

"Sasha!"

She could hear him.

She could see him.

But he couldn't reach her.

The Core began consuming her existence.

Sasha looked toward the barrier.

Then she whispered something no one had heard before.

"If I return, I won't ask him to love me."

The One Who Stays looked shocked.

The memory continued.

Sasha's hand pressed against her heart.

"I'll ask him to choose me."

Dillan's breath caught.

Sasha's voice grew weaker.

"And if he doesn't…"

The Core swallowed her arm.

She closed her eyes.

"…I'll learn how to survive that answer."

The memory ended.

The crimson light disappeared.

Sasha stood in the chamber, shaking.

Dillan looked at her.

"You made that choice?"

"Yes."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

She smiled painfully.

"Because I didn't know if I could keep the promise."

Dillan stepped closer.

Sasha immediately raised a hand.

"Don't."

He stopped.

She looked at him.

"Don't comfort me because you're afraid I'll break."

Dillan lowered his hand.

"Then what do you want?"

Sasha stared at him for a long moment.

Then answered:

"I want you to stop treating my love like a wound you have to heal."

Dillan said nothing.

The System appeared.

SECOND LOCK: RESTORED.SASHA RUREN: VOLUNTARY CHOICE CONFIRMED.EMOTIONAL DEPENDENCY: UNRESOLVED.HOST RESPONSE REQUIRED.

Dillan looked at the final notification.

"What response?"

The System changed.

QUESTION:IF SASHA CHOOSES YOU FREELY, WILL YOU ALLOW HER TO LEAVE FREELY?

Sasha's eyes widened.

The chamber went silent.

Dillan looked at her.

Then at the Abandoned Self.

Then at the woman who had waited for him beneath the oak tree.

He opened his mouth.

But before he could answer…

Sasha's shadow moved independently.

It turned toward Dillan.

And whispered:

"Don't answer him."
