Mindless Beasts
Chapter 95: Dangerous
At first Sly hesitated, then was about to relent when he thought since he was already ready to go to the anniversary service why not let Verde escort him there and they could talk along the way.
After what happened yesterday he wouldn’t feel comfortable beijing alone with Verde in the apartment.
Out on the streets, they would be visible to the public and Sly would feel more at ease in Verde’s presence.
Sly communicated his thoughts and Verde agreed, after one last sweep of his apartment to make sure the lights were off and the appliances Sly used were unplugged, they finally left.
It was a dramatic change from yesterday and Verde had spent extra attention with his appearance.
His uniform was immaculate and the green hair was slicked back and pulled back off his face.
"Good morning Sly. How are you feeling today?" asked Verde politely.
Like an idiot. "I’m okay," replied Sly. "Just woke up with a slight headache but I’ve already taken some medicine for it so no need to worry."
"I had applied for exemption from classes for you since it’s my fault you got caught up in that debacle yesterday. I didn’t like how Khaldun made it look like I didn’t care about our wellbeing but I figured it was better for you to get the tests out of the way and then you could rest."
"No worries, I’m not mad about what happened yesterday, it was out of your control Verde. I’m fine."
Verde raised an eyebrow but didn’t stop walking.
"This might be me overdoing it but I must say, you don’t look fine. You look anxious and on the verge of tears, if I speak too harshly you would probably start crying."
Sly let out a nervous laugh.
Given what happened last night he still felt a bit embarrassed and found the whole situation between them ridiculous.
Sensing that Sly was partially in agreement with him Verde decided to plead his case.
Having Verde press him about Khaldun was too much, he couldn’t wait to reach the auditorium where the anniversary ceremony was being held fast enough.
"Look, don’t let Khaldun use you and hurt your feelings. He had a bad reputation for discarding lovers in the past. I don’t think any of his relationships ever lasted more than a month, he never stays long with any of the guides he sleeps with."
His words hit a sore spot with Sly and it showed all over the omega’s small face.
Those words hurt Sly, he thought things would be different between him and Khaldun, but Sly was no different from those guides, he too had been rejected but this wasn’t any of Verde’s business.
It hurts.
Khaldun’s rejection was just too much.
Verde Green’s mood was very complex.
Every time he saw Sly Foxx in person, he felt all his emotions come bubbling up to the surface.
Sly Foxx always has this frank, innocent gaze and always greeted Verde with a sweet shy smile.
He couldn’t picture Sly Foxx and Khaldun Wolfe living happily ever after, life wasn’t a fairytale.
Still he couldn’t forget how Sly easily dismissed him to go home with the Royal Alpha, the seeds of hate for Khaldun started to grow in Verde Green’s heart.
With a sigh in his heart, Verde said softly, "Sly Foxx, I wasn’t born with a silver spoon in my mouth and absolutely no one can choose their background. I can’t provide you with the affluence of old money but my feelings for you are genuine and I would take care of you comfortably. I can’t decide for you since the choice of your future is only yours to make."
Sly knew that Verde set aside his pride to accommodate Sly and that his words were heartfelt, but still Sly could not return those feelings and so he just replied, "I know."
A heavy silence fell between them for a few minutes.
Verde broke the silence by changing the subject, "since your differentiation as an omega guide have you given any thought to your future?"
Sly pondered the question for a few seconds before responding, "I have a natural affinity for healing and I like helping others, I may consider specializing in the guide medical program in order to join a legion as a military doctor."
"You want to take on being a military doctor in the legion, it isn’t safe, it is too close to the action, the medical departments out in the legion are always shortstaffed, overworked and continuously facing danger and harsh treatment. Why not be like Dr. Shirley, by staying out of the war zone, there is nothing wrong with the comfort of office work, the job will be just as demanding but at least you will be safe."
Verde felt uncomfortable, Sly was to be protected, such a job was too dangerous for him.
There was a severe crisis in the Ephedra empire, there were more sentinels than guides.
Priority was given to higher tier sentinels.
Those sentinels below B rank could spend their whole lives without ever receiving guiding.
Without a guide to keep these low tier sentinels stable they tended to stay in rampage mode too long until they detonated like a bomb or became psychotic killing machines that higher tier sentinels were sent out to track and destroy.
Verde preferred that Sly be safely behind a desk than out there facing the extremity of dangers on the battlefield.
Sly Foxx replied earnestly, "I would be bored with a regular desk job. Most guides tend to stick to the capital where it’s safest. Those serving on the front lines need more medical attention and servicing from guides. I don’t mind doing my best to help alleviate some of those problems."
Maybe he was more like Khaldun than he wanted to be, thought Verde, he couldn’t imagine a possessive alpha like Khaldun sharing Sly with others.
Verde blurted out, "I’m sure Khaldun wouldn’t take his partner to the battlefield. You can’t have Khaldun and a career, you would have to make a choice and you would still lose yourself in the process."
