  7. Chapter 382

Ansu seriously repeated the divine decree to Celia:

“He has been waking up more and more frequently of late. The God of Clamor and Filth will soon break completely free from His shackles and return to the mortal realm. When that happens, the entire world will be submerged in filthy power.”

“And you and I are the ones He has identified as His greatest threats.”

Celia nodded. She was well aware of this.

But in the depths of Ansu's eyes, a deeper helplessness churned.

“The Goddess told me that He has been awake for a long time this time, watching us from the shadows.”

“In the end, He discovered... that between the two of us, the one who truly poses a threat to Him is actually me.”

“Because I am the true source of safe magic, and I am the only existence capable of influencing you.”

“You?” Celia's face was filled with shock. “Then what do we do now? Ansu, did the Goddess say anything else? She will protect you, right?”

“She will protect me, but...”

In Ansu's eyes, a despair slowly surfaced that Celia could not comprehend at all.

“What is it? What on earth happened? What else did She say?” Celia instantly panicked.

“She told us to hold on first, while She figures out a solution...”

Ansu suddenly spat out another mouthful of black blood.

And then...

His body began to tremble uncontrollably in a bizarre manner. Those patterns writhed and expanded frantically, as if they would tear through his flesh and burst at any second.

Even with the holy light enveloping his entire body, it could not stop this momentum of disintegration.

Celia immediately raised her hand, frantically casting healing spells, pouring her mana into Ansu without a moment's pause.

But she knew deep down that these spells were utterly useless. If they could have solved it, this curse wouldn't have dragged on until today.

“Why won't it heal? Why won't it heal...” Celia's voice trembled, her fingertips shaking.

“I...” Ansu tightly clutched his chest as his vision began to blur.

Countless memories of the past flashed through his mind, spinning rapidly like a revolving lantern.

Suddenly, several blurry memories that shouldn't have existed forced their way into his mind.

It was the night he first started learning magic at home.

He was holding the basic magic book Celia had given him, teaching himself Meditation and Illumination. Yet, his magic practice, which should have gone smoothly, suddenly spiraled out of control.

After absorbing mana, he was instantly struck by a backlash of corruption. His consciousness became chaotic, and his mind fell into a frenzy, giving Vera, who had gotten up in the middle of the night to use the restroom, quite a scare.

Vera rushed over in a panic, shaking his body repeatedly. “Brother! Brother, what's wrong with you?”

Once Ansu barely regained consciousness, he realized that he had lost control the very first time he tried to learn magic.

The mana in this world was indeed corrupted, incredibly sinister... The Church wasn't wrong either; magic truly brought madness and destruction.

Next, his memories grew more and more chaotic.

Jumping rapidly to the day of his second backlash.

Another scene that shouldn't have existed appeared in Ansu's mind.

Back then, he had exposed his identity as the Chosen One, causing Celia to fall into depression. To cheer her up, Ansu had specially taken her to the racetrack in the Black Harbor District to relax.

The two of them had happily watched the race and even unexpectedly bought the magical pony, Radish. This should have been a relaxing and beautiful memory.

But in the alley on their way back, they were cornered by a casino gang. Ansu wanted to show off the magic he had practiced so hard, trying to act like a gentleman in front of Celia.

But it triggered a mana backlash once again...

Before the enemies were even dealt with, a sharp pain tore through his chest. His mind went wild, and filthy black mist spilled from his entire body as he collapsed straight onto the ground.

That scene had turned Celia's face deathly pale. From then on, she firmly demanded that he use magic as little as possible.

After that, the ancient demon ruins, the journey to the North...

The frequency of the backlashes grew higher, and their severity increased.

His body withered day by day, his spirit continuously weakened, and the filthy mana slowly eroded all of his internal organs.

Until a few days ago, his body had already been completely hollowed out, which was equivalent to a silent death sentence.

Mana backlash was irreversible; there was no cure.

As these fragments of memory that shouldn't have existed were pieced together, Ansu stared blankly at Celia in front of him, instantly figuring everything out.

It was over.

He completely understood what this move actually was.

The God of Clamor and Filth wasn't altering memories, nor was He traveling back to the past to intercept him... to kill him early and eliminate the threat.

Instead...

Ansu recalled the ancient book, 《Hoffman's Alchemy Notes》.

It was this very book that had unexpectedly caused him and Celia to trigger a magic resonance, allowing them to travel back in the first person to the Era of Magic in the Second Era, over two thousand years ago.

In the book, Master Hoffman had written two sentences:

“Mana is the primordial, essential parameter of the world.”

“The past cannot be changed; it can only be recorded. However, mana can transcend the walls of time and space to transmit information.”

Mana was the most fundamental underlying code of this world, ubiquitous like gravity, and one of the fundamental forces just like gravity.

The world called the false god the God of Magic, and He was naturally able to achieve His goals by interfering with mana, even though His true authority was 【Corruption】.

“He is an existence that transcends dimensions. In His eyes, time is never linear... That's why He can interfere with mana to cause it to be corrupted...” Ansu murmured softly.

“Celia, back when we first met, the very first time I self-taught magic, the mana I absorbed had already been heavily corrupted by Him.”

Celia's eyes widened in disbelief.

“How could that be...”

But thinking about it this way, it indeed made sense. So back then, He hadn't been repelled by his own power... instead, realizing He couldn't obliterate him at that moment, He had turned to look for another way...

And in the end, He had come up with a completely unsolvable move.

Planting a curse at the very source of time.

At almost the exact same moment, several memories that shouldn't have existed flooded into Celia's mind as well, perfectly corroborating Ansu's words.

“Ansu...” Her voice tightened. “When I first started learning magic from Samantha, my body also experienced strange issues for some reason... but I know these are false memories...”

It was just that her foundation was strong and her talent was immense, so the symptoms she was experiencing now were far milder than Ansu's.

“As expected of a god-level existence...” Ansu let out a miserable laugh, his eyes filled entirely with helplessness and despair. “We simply stand no chance against Him.”

He could never have imagined that the other party could actually go to such lengths.

Transcending the dimensions of time to directly block all of his paths to survival across the entire timeline.

Isn't this just... spawn camping?

“What about the Goddess of Holy Light?” Celia stared at the pillar of light above her head, a final shred of hope in her voice. “Can She save you!”

Ansu shook his head gently. “I'm afraid not... I haven't heard Her response again.”

“Useless Goddess!”

Celia completely lost control of her emotions. “What on earth is She good for! A useless Goddess who does nothing but stir up trouble and make things worse!”

“Sigh, is it still no use...” Ansu stared at the light, his heart filled with nothing but despair.

He had clearly thought of so many solutions, and he had believed victory was right before his eyes...

Celia was gradually being assailed by the corruption. She clutched her chest and coughed violently, a trail of black blood spilling from the corner of her mouth.

Gritting her teeth, she still forced herself to reach out and support the limp Ansu.

When Celia looked up and saw the despair in Ansu's eyes, that lifeless desolation...

She was suddenly stung sharply.

How heartbroken Ansu must be right now. He had clearly put in so much effort...

Sadness surged up like a tide, making her throat tighten.

“Ansu!” Celia shouted with all her might. Her voice was hoarse, yet incredibly resolute. “You haven't lost! You haven't lost yet! You absolutely cannot give up!”

“Go back! You must synchronize all your memories to me!”

“We'll bear it together! You still have me, and we will definitely turn things around!”

Out of the void, a majestic and terrifying power suddenly descended.

“An—”

A dull thud echoed.

Ansu's body was instantly crushed into pieces, turning into fine fragments of flesh and blood that scattered throughout the blood mist.

Celia froze on the spot.

In the final moment, her gaze held not only sorrow but also a stubborn, unyielding strength.
