Milf Cashback System:Every beauty I spend on makes me richer
Chapter 182: Aftermath
Jack was already out of the SUV by the time Liam managed the door, and whatever he’d been about to say died the moment he got a clear look at him under the dome light.
"You’re bleeding from your eyebrow."
"I noticed." You’re walking like your ribs are cracked.
"They might be."
Jack didn’t argue, didn’t fuss just held the door and let Liam ease himself into the passenger seat with the careful, deliberate movements of a man taking inventory of every place it hurt.
The engine turned over. Behind them, the scrapyard’s rusted gate shrank into the mirror and disappeared, and the SUV rolled back through streets slick with rain, warehouses giving way slowly to the ordinary glow of the city.
Neither of them spoke for a while. The wipers kept a steady rhythm against the glass, and Liam let his head rest against the window, watching streetlights smear past in long amber streaks.
"Did you win?" Jack asked eventually.
"I don’t know if winning was ever on the table."
"Then what happened?"
Liam looked down at his knuckles split, swollen, one already darkening at the joint. "He wanted to see something. I think he saw it."
Jack didn’t push. He’d learned, over these last weeks, which silences were the kind that needed filling and which ones just needed to be left alone until Liam was ready to break them himself. This one, he let sit the rest of the drive.
Renee met them at the villa door and didn’t bother hiding her reaction. "Sit. Now."
Liam didn’t argue with her either. She worked with the brisk, practiced efficiency of someone who had cleaned up after him more times than either of them cared to count, pressing gauze to the cut above his eye, taping it shut with quick, sure hands.
Jessica hovered a few feet away, arms crossed tight over her chest, her eyes tracking every wince he didn’t quite manage to hide.
"Derek?" she asked, once Renee had moved on to his knuckles.
"Alive. Changed, maybe." Liam let out a slow breath as the antiseptic found a cut he hadn’t noticed yet. "He’s not an enemy anymore."
"And the other one?"
He was quiet a moment too long before answering. "Stone Cold got what he wanted.
He walked away."
"That’s not an ending."
"No." Liam met her eyes. "But it’s not a war either. Not anymore."
Jessica studied him like she wanted to argue the point further, weigh it against everything she’d already been through because of this city and the men in it but she let it go, for tonight at least, and settled instead for making sure Renee finished properly before either of them left him alone.
Dexter arrived later, without the usual trail of guards, and found Liam exactly where he’d been the night before out on the balcony, the city spread beneath him in a wash of wet light.
In the dim glow spilling from the doorway, Dexter looked older than Liam had ever quite noticed. Not weaker.
Just older, in the way that only comes from finally setting down a weight you’d been carrying so long you’d forgotten it had a shape.
"Derek told you," Dexter said. It wasn’t a question.
"He did."Dexter’s jaw tightened, and for a long stretch neither of them said anything at all, both watching the same skyline as if it might offer something neither could find in each other.
"I should have known what was happening to him," Dexter said finally. "Before it went that far."
"You should have." Liam didn’t soften it, and Dexter didn’t seem to want him to. "But you’re not the one who put the drugs in his hand at fifteen."
"That doesn’t make what I did to him right."
"No. It doesn’t." Liam turned to face him fully, letting the words land the way they needed to.
"But it’s the difference between a man who made one unforgivable mistake and a man who built his whole life around making them."
Dexter absorbed that in silence, his shoulders easing by some small, almost imperceptible degree — not absolution, nothing that clean, but the beginning of something he could carry instead of drown under.
"Derek stays out of my organization," he said eventually. "But he doesn’t answer to Stone Cold anymore either. Not after tonight."
"He never really did," Liam said. "He answered to guilt. That’s a different kind of leash."
Something almost like a smile crossed Dexter’s face tired, worn thin, but real. "You’ve gotten better at this than I expected."
"At what?"
"Seeing people clearly." He turned back toward the doorway, pausing there with one hand on the frame. "It’s a dangerous skill in this business."
"Everything’s dangerous in this business."
"True enough." A faint nod. "Get some rest, Liam. You’ve earned it, for once."
He disappeared back into the house, footsteps fading down the hall, and Liam let the quiet settle back over the balcony like something physical.
Alone again, he lowered himself into the chair by the railing, the ache in his ribs dulling now into something more familiar than sharp.
Ben was still out there somewhere a loose thread neither he nor Derek had an answer for, a name that would probably surface again when it was least convenient.
Tonight, he let it stay a thread. Some things didn’t need chasing the moment they appeared. Some things could wait until they came looking on their own terms.
Harrison was finished, his network scattered to nothing. Derek’s grudge had burned itself out clean in a scrapyard full of rusted metal and rain.
And Stone Cold Stone Cold had walked away with whatever proof he’d come hunting for, but not as an enemy standing over a body. He’d left as a man who’d found something worth respecting instead of something worth destroying.
For the first time in weeks, nobody was watching the villa. No black sedans idling at the curb. No messages from numbers that didn’t exist.
No cold, mechanical notice sliding through his mind demanding he brace for the next threat before he’d even finished bleeding from the last one.
Just the rain, softening now to a drizzle. Just the city, humming quietly below him, indifferent to everything that had almost happened inside it tonight.
Liam closed his eyes and let himself, finally, rest. The storm had passed.
For now.
