Chapter 23: Territorial Waltz
Camilla Verman did not let go of his tie.
She stood at the edge of the crowded bar and held his gaze with a fierce, territorial heat.
Across the sprawling Crystal Pavilion, Victoria Sterling stood near a towering ice sculpture.
The founder of Vertex Management held a flute of champagne and watched them with an unreadable expression.
To the untrained eye, Victoria looked like a scorned woman watching her rival claim the prize.
Lucas knew the truth. Victoria was watching her loyal spy execute a flawless infiltration.
But Camilla was operating on a different set of facts. The real estate developer believed she had just caught her enemy trying to steal back the man who had chosen her.
"She is bold," Camilla murmured. Her voice was a low, melodic threat. "I will give her that. To walk into my gala and try to corner you while I am giving a speech takes a special kind of arrogance."
Lucas kept his hands resting casually on the polished mahogany bar. "She is used to getting what she wants."
"Not tonight," Camilla said.
She let go of his tie and slid her hand down to interlock her fingers with his. The physical contact was deliberate and firm.
She turned to face the center of the room where the string quartet had transitioned into a slow, sweeping waltz.
Couples were already moving onto the polished marble dance floor.
"We are going to dance," Camilla instructed.
"I thought Silas said I was just a visual asset," Lucas teased lightly.
"Silas is an idiot who worries about press optics," Camilla replied as she pulled him away from the bar. "Only what I say matters now."
A blue notification materialized in the air just above the dancing couples.
[Acquisition Quest Generated: The Territorial Waltz.]
[Objective: Satisfy the target’s possessive ego without contradicting your established narrative.]
[Reward: 200 AP.]
[Failure Penalty: The target will suspect you are still harboring loyalties to her rival.]
Lucas dismissed the prompt and let her lead him onto the floor.
He stepped into the rhythm of the music. His Sophisticated Etiquette skill took over his muscle memory.
He placed his right hand firmly on the curve of her lower back and held her left hand in the air.
He guided her into the slow, sweeping rotations of the waltz with an effortless grace that made several wealthy investors turn their heads to watch.
Camilla leaned in close.
The silk of her emerald gown brushed against his bespoke charcoal trousers. She rested her chin near his shoulder.
"So," Camilla whispered. Her warm breath ghosted against his neck. "What did she offer you?"
Lucas knew he had to feed her a lie that stroked her ego and validated her paranoia.
"She offered me my old job back," Lucas lied smoothly. He kept his voice low so only she could hear over the swell of the cellos.
"She told me this PR stunt was beneath my talents. She offered to double my old salary and give me a corner office if I walked out of this building right now and left you standing alone."
Camilla let out a soft, dark laugh. The sound vibrated against his chest.
"She is desperate," Camilla said. "She lost the upper hand and now she is trying to buy her way out of the humiliation. And what did you tell her?"
Lucas applied a gentle pressure to her lower back and spun her smoothly across the marble floor.
He waited until they were facing the edge of the room again before he answered.
"I told her I do not work for Vertex Management anymore," Lucas said. He looked down into her piercing green eyes. "I told her no amount of money could make me walk out that door."
The remaining tension in Camilla’s shoulders melted away.
His Micro-Motive Perception illuminated the raw satisfaction blooming in her chest. She felt victorious.
She had defeated her rival in the boardroom and she believed she had defeated her in the battle for his loyalty. The scent of dark cherry and vanilla grew warmer and more intoxicating.
She slid her hand from his shoulder and let her fingers tangle in the hair at the nape of his neck. She pulled him a fraction of an inch closer.
"You are a very smart man, Lucas," Camilla murmured.
"I try to be," Lucas replied.
They rotated toward the far side of the room. Lucas caught a brief glimpse of Victoria Sterling through the shifting crowd.
The mogul was turning away from the dance floor and handing her empty champagne flute to a waiter.
She gave Lucas one final, subtle nod of approval before walking toward the brass exit doors.
Victoria believed the intimate dance was proof that her spy had successfully seduced the target.
Camilla believed the dance was proof that she had conquered Victoria’s favorite toy.
Lucas was standing in the middle of a warzone and both generals thought they were winning.
The string quartet finished the final sweeping notes of the waltz. The surrounding crowd offered a polite round of applause.

[The target’s territorial instincts have been satiated.]
Camilla did not immediately step out of his arms. She lingered in his embrace for a long moment.
She looked up at him with a heavy, hooded gaze that had nothing to do with corporate warfare or public relations.
"The auction is closed," Camilla said softly. "The mayor is drunk and the press photographers are leaving."
"Does that mean we have satisfied the board of directors?" Lucas asked.
"It means I am done sharing you with this room," Camilla stated.
She grabbed his hand and led him off the dance floor.
They bypassed the lingering investors and the frantic event organizers.
They walked straight out the brass doors and into the crisp autumn night. The red carpet was mostly empty. The luxury town car was already idling at the curb.
A valet opened the rear door. Lucas offered his hand and helped Camilla slide into the plush leather interior.
He climbed in after her and the heavy door shut, sealing them in the quiet, climate-controlled cabin.
The privacy partition was raised. They were alone.
Camilla kicked off her expensive high heels. She let out a long sigh and leaned her head back against the leather seat.
The adrenaline of the gala was fading, leaving behind the heavy, unresolved tension they had abandoned on the marble coffee table hours ago.
"Home, Ms. Verman?" the driver asked through the intercom speaker.
Camilla opened her eyes and looked at Lucas. The memory of the PR director interrupting them flashed in her green eyes.
"No," Camilla said toward the intercom. "Take us to the Mercer property."
Lucas frowned slightly. "Are we not going back to the penthouse?"
Camilla reached across the seat. She placed her hand on his knee and slowly dragged her nails up his thigh.
The friction sent a jolt of raw heat straight through his tailored trousers.
"The Mercer property is a residential skyscraper my firm just finished building," Camilla murmured as she leaned closer. "The penthouse unit on the top floor is staged with furniture but it has not been listed on the market yet. The cameras are off. The security team is not stationed there."
Lucas felt his pulse spike.
"Why are we going there?" Lucas asked. He already knew the answer.
Camilla stopped her hand high on his thigh. She looked at his lips and offered a dangerous, wicked smile.
