Chapter 17: Post-Intimacy Paranoia

The smartphone vibrated violently in his palm once more.

Evelyn jumped at the sound this time.

The heavy fog of lust that had clouded her brown eyes vanished in a single heartbeat.

She pulled the damp towel tight against her chest and took a rapid step backward. She looked at the ringing phone and then at his half-dressed state.

The spell was broken. Reality crashed down on her with the crushing weight of a collapsed roof.

Lucas knew he had no choice. If he ignored Camilla Verman she would perceive it as a threat to her absolute authority.

He swiped the green icon and brought the phone to his ear.

"Ms. Verman," Lucas answered. He forced his voice to sound perfectly awake and attentive.

"You did not text me when you arrived home," Camilla said. Her melodic voice carried a sharp edge of irritation over the line.

Evelyn watched him. Lucas activated his Advanced Body Language Reading.

The blue overlay washed over his landlady and illuminated a massive spike in her emotional distress. Her shoulders curled inward.

Her jaw clamped shut. She was drowning in a sudden and violent wave of shame.

She felt like a cheap distraction.

"I apologize," Lucas said to the magnate on the phone. "I was exhausted. I just walked through the door and dropped my things."

"Are you alone?" Camilla asked. The question was casual but held the dangerous weight of an interrogation.

Lucas looked directly into Evelyn’s eyes. The older woman wrapped her arms around her stomach as if she was physically sick.

She was a widow who spent her days managing a crumbling building and missing her grown children.

She had just serviced a young tenant on her living room floor and now she was listening to him report his whereabouts to a wealthy woman who clearly "owned" him.

"I am alone," Lucas lied smoothly.

"Good," Camilla purred. The irritation faded from her tone. The power dynamic was restored. "You scrambled my thoughts at dinner Lucas. I do not like losing control of my employees. I need to make sure you remember who gives orders."

"I know who gives the orders," Lucas replied. He kept his tone subservient but steady.

"Be at the penthouse by nine tomorrow morning," Camilla instructed. "We have a press briefing regarding the charity gala and I need my devoted fiancé looking sharp. Do not be late."

The line clicked dead.

Lucas lowered the phone. The quiet hum of the iron radiator filled the suffocating silence of the room.

He reached down and picked up his discarded trousers from the floor. He stepped into them and pulled the zipper up.

Evelyn did not say a word. She walked over to the floral couch and grabbed one of the folded blankets. She unfolded it and tossed it onto the cushions with jerky mechanical movements.

"Evelyn," Lucas started quietly.

"Do not," Evelyn interrupted. Her voice cracked. She kept her back to him. "Just go to sleep."

Lucas stepped forward. "I know how that sounded. My job is complicated."

Evelyn turned around. The pink flush of arousal on her neck had been replaced by a pale color.

The deep loneliness that had driven her to touch him was now entirely eclipsed by her own better judgment.

"Your job is none of my business," Evelyn said. Her tone was defensive and harsh. "What just happened here was a mistake. I am a grown woman Lucas. I do not play games with young men, this shouldn’t have happened."

"It was not a game to me," Lucas said.

"It was cheap," Evelyn whispered while looking at the floor. She rubbed her arms as if trying to scrub away a phantom chill. "I feel cheap. I let a young man in a fancy suit talk his way into my head because my house is quiet and my radiator was broken. I should have known better."

Lucas knew the System required him to build dependency but he was not a sociopath.

Using his Silver Tongue skill to charm her right now would only make him look like a manipulative.

He needed to be smarter.

"You gave me a place to sleep when I was locked out," Lucas said gently. "You are a good person Evelyn. I will sleep on the couch and I will be gone before you wake up. I will not mention this again."

Evelyn looked up at him. She searched his face for any sign of mockery or lingering predatory intent.

She found only calm acceptance. He was giving her exactly what she needed.

"Thank you," Evelyn murmured.

She turned and walked down the narrow hallway. She stepped into her bedroom and closed the door.

The heavy brass lock clicked into place. The sound echoed in the quiet apartment like a final verdict.

Lucas let out a tired sigh and sank onto the floral couch. He pulled the scratchy blanket over his legs and stared at the dark ceiling.

He had won the System points but the victory felt hollow, she regretted it.

He needed to change that.

A blue notification pulsed softly in the dark.

[Target Respect Maintained.]

[The target’s guilt has been acknowledged and validated.]

A secondary window popped up next to it.

[Skill Evolution Unlocked.]

[Current AP Balance: 700]

[Host possesses Advanced Body Language Reading (Level 1). Would you like to spend 500 AP to evolve this skill?]

Lucas mentally selected the confirmation button.

He needed every advantage he could get before he walked back into Camilla’s penthouse tomorrow.

[Skill Evolved: Micro-Motive Perception (Level 2)]

[Description: The Host can now perceive the underlying psychological motivations driving a target’s physical reactions. You will no longer just see what they feel. You will understand why they feel it.]

A warm pressure built behind his eyes before fading into a sharp crystalline clarity.

His brain cataloged the new influx of analytical processing power.

He closed his eyes and forced himself to sleep. The charity gala was looming and the stakes were only getting higher.

He woke up at six in the morning. The basement apartment was silent.

The bedroom door down the hall remained firmly locked.

Lucas stood up and dressed in the dim light. His tailored charcoal suit was slightly wrinkled from the chair but it would have to do.

He found a pen and a torn receipt on the kitchen counter. He wrote a brief note and left it next to her coffee maker.

Thank you for the couch. Rent will be early. - Lucas.

He did not add any flair. He kept it grounded.

He unlocked the front door and slipped out of the apartment. He climbed the stairs to the ground floor and pushed his way out of the crumbling building.

The morning air was biting cold.

The sun was barely rising over the city skyline leaving shadows across the damp pavement.

He needed to find a locksmith to get back into his own apartment for his spare clothes before heading to the financial district.

He stepped off the curb and paused.

A sleek black luxury sedan was parked illegally next to the nearest fire hydrant. It was not Camilla’s familiar town car.

The windows were heavily tinted and the engine was purring with a quiet menacing hum.

The rear passenger window slowly rolled down.

Victoria Sterling sat in the back seat. She wore a pristine white trench coat over a dark business suit.

Her dark hair was pulled back into a severe knot. She did not look like a CEO checking on her employee. She looked like an executioner waiting for the condemned.

Lucas felt his pulse spike. Victoria was supposed to be managing Vertex Management from her high-rise office. She never ventured into this part of the city.

"Get in," Victoria commanded. Her voice sliced through the cold morning air.

Lucas walked around the vehicle and opened the heavy door. He slid onto the plush leather seat and closed the door behind him.

The interior smelled of expensive leather and her signature jasmine perfume. The privacy partition separating them from the driver was firmly raised.

"Good morning Ms. Sterling," Lucas said while maintaining his Somatic Composure.

Victoria did not return the greeting. She tapped a manicured finger against the screen of her digital tablet.

Her dark eyes were fixed on the glowing data with a terrifying intensity.

"My cyber security division detected a massive spike in encrypted ping requests originating from Camilla Verman’s servers at four o’clock this morning," Victoria stated without looking up. "Her forensic team is actively sweeping external financial networks. They are hunting for something specific."

Lucas swallowed hard. The trap.

Camilla had not fully believed his romantic bluff at the restaurant after all.

She had gone home and immediately ordered her team to check if Victoria was trying to move the offshore funds.

"She is paranoid," Lucas said carefully. "She knows I am still working for you."

Victoria finally looked up. Her gaze locked onto him with the precision of a sniper scope.

Thanks to his newly evolved Micro-Motive Perception skill Lucas saw the microscopic tightening of her eyelids and the rigid set of her jaw.

The blue System overlay translated the data instantly.

[Target Motivation: Severe paranoia. The target suspects you have betrayed her and sided with the rival.]

"I know she is paranoid," Victoria said in a voice as smooth as glass. "What I want to know is why her forensic team is suddenly searching for digital footprints linked to my former husband’s holding companies."

Lucas froze.

Victoria leaned slightly closer. The scent of jasmine became suffocating.

"I did not tell Camilla about those holding companies," Victoria whispered. The air in the car dropped ten degrees. "The only way she knows what to look for is if she acquired my private financial records. Tell me Lucas. Is there any chance you have seen those records in her possession?"

He was trapped in a metal box with a ruthless mogul who was seconds away from destroying his life.

If he lied and she found out, she’d ruin him.

If he told the truth she would panic and trigger the exact digital trap Camilla had set.
