Mercenary’s War
Chapter 2658 - 2632: Rule Keeper
It’s not that Gao Yang is ruthless, trying to squeeze every last bit of value from Yarebin, but rather that he’s realized it’s better for Yarebin to stay busy than to be idle.
People like Yarebin, keeping busy with work, can live a few more years. If they have nothing to do, they’d decline even faster.
Look at Yarebin’s behavior at home; you can tell he doesn’t know how to live a normal life. Asking an over-eighty-year-old to learn and adapt to a new life is really not as good as letting him do what he wants and live the life he desires.
Gao Yang looked at Yarebin with expectation and said, "Teacher, you have to help me."
Yarebin nodded with a smile, but soon after nodding, he hesitated.
After a moment of thought, Yarebin said to Gao Yang, "What do you plan to do?"
Gao Yang was stunned and said, "What to do? I, I don’t know, so I really need your help, Teacher."
Yarebin sighed, waved his hand at Gao Yang, and said, "Gao, Black Demon is already under your leadership. When it comes to fishing, as long as there’s good bait, there’s almost no chance of failure. Especially since you have the Devil’s full cooperation; if you still fail, it just means you’re too incompetent."
Gao Yang was speechless with embarrassment, so he turned his gaze to Glewatov, but Glewatov just gently shook his head, indicating he had no solutions.
Yarebin continued calmly, "It’s not that you don’t know what to do, but with me here, you just don’t want to do it. This won’t work, Gao. You have to take responsibility. You also need to quickly master the skills a Black Demon should have. Most importantly, there are some things you have to learn to do. I know you’re not very familiar with the work of an agent, but if you don’t do it, you’ll never be familiar with it."
After speaking, Yarebin sighed lightly and said, "I’m too old, my health isn’t good. There are many things you should learn to do, create a plan and execute it. If there’s anything you don’t understand, you can ask me. But I won’t do it for you anymore. I want to enjoy a leisurely life, traveling around in America."
Gao Yang pondered for a moment, and finally said, "Alright, as long as you’re happy, you can do whatever you want."
Yarebin smiled and said, "I believe you can handle it. Is there any other issue?"
Gao Yang hesitated and said, "As a Black Demon, I’d like to know if you’re familiar with the Cleaners, or know anything about them?"
Yarebin became serious and said solemnly, "No, in the Soviet era, we never heard of the term ’Cleaners’. I think this organization is probably not a historical one, otherwise, the KGB would have heard something. However, the power and capability this organization displays are astounding; I feel even fear just listening about it. Think about it, a multinational organization, acting extremely secretive yet efficiently, even able to influence American departments like the FBI and CIA, what is this? It’s impacting American national security. A new organization couldn’t have developed to such a degree in just a dozen or twenty years, absolutely impossible. So, I highly suspect this is an old multinational organization with a new branch established in recent years, it must be so!"
Gao Yang nodded and said, "That’s right, it must be so. Based on what I’ve seen so far, this massive and efficient organization called the Cleaners is intimidating. Currently, we are still partners, with quite a good relationship. You could even say without the Cleaners’ help, we would have been finished early. But I’m always fearful."
Yarebin stared at Gao Yang and said, "You’re fearful?"
"Yes, because the power the Cleaners show is terrifying. You could say, if the Cleaners want to eliminate Satan, just a slight slip through the fingers would suffice. Although our relationship is good now, who can say about the future? My worry is that Satan will become a puppet of the Cleaners. If the Cleaners want that, we really would have no way to deal with them."
Yarebin pondered for a moment, then nodded and said, "Your concerns are valid, but you don’t have to think too much."
Gao Yang exclaimed with surprise, "You think the Cleaners won’t pose a threat to us?"
Yarebin laughed and said, "No, since you can’t resist, what does thinking too much accomplish?"
Gao Yang’s surprise immediately faded, and he said helplessly, "Teacher, you’re too funny..."
Yarebin slowly said, "But the Cleaners remind me of a once very influential organization."
Sometimes selling a little suspense is inevitable. Seeing Yarebin intended to be suspenseful, Gao Yang certainly had to play along.
"What organization?"
"No name. I said it was a very influential, not a famous organization. To be precise, no one knows the name of this organization, except for a few senior members."
"Alright, go on."
Yarebin said slowly, "Think about it, the Cleaners’ main business is eliminating evidence, they don’t take intelligence or assassin business. As for intelligence work, currently, the largest is the Cicero Family, but the intelligence organization isn’t something a family or a single underworld organization can monopolize. The Cicero Family is the biggest, but far from a monopoly. And as for assassins, assassin groups have never disappeared, just not known to the public. Now, the question is, why has no successful organization gotten all three major businesses of the underworld up and running?"
Gao Yang said in a low voice, "Yeah, why not?"
Yarebin exhaled and said, "It’s not that they don’t want to, but that they can’t, though it’s only that they can’t now. In history, there was once such an organization, intelligence, assassins, elimination, even what you mercenaries do now; they could do it all. A vast, efficient, non-national organization, with money as its only belief, such an organization once existed, but vanished in the devastation of World War II."
"Vanished?"
Yarebin gently nodded and said, "Vanished. Such a colossal entity wouldn’t be tolerated by any country, especially not by America and the Soviet Union, who were the maintainers of world order then. Under the concerted effort of both countries, this organization first split and then vanished. From birth to disappearance, the organization always maintained the greatest mystery, so much so that no one knew its name."
Gao Yang sighed lightly, "It’s a pity, really, not even knowing the name."
Then, Glewatov suddenly said, "Actually, it’s not that no trace was left, at least, um, maybe, just maybe, I seem to know the name."
Yarebin looked at Glewatov in surprise and said, "You know? What is it called?"
Glewatov hesitated for a moment, then finally said in a low voice, "Grey Cloak Man, of course, Grey Cloak Man is just a nickname, the official name should be Rule Keeper."
