Chapter 250: Rest...
Chapter 250: Rest…
Looking at the notifications, Ishiki’s face lit up with an understanding smile.
He felt the power coursing through his entire body, like a new switch had been flipped and a new kind of electricity was now coursing through his body.
It was not very mighty and grand power up, but the strength he received at this level was not a joke. He imagined how much more powerful a person at level 50 would be.
No wonder that bastard Kenji was so tough to fight back then. He had far surpassed what could be called as a human.
He had ascended!
’Damn that… Yuki must be at an even higher level and far stronger.’
He looked at where the demon’s body had been.
There was no body.
The purple flame had taken it the moment Sorrow’s Edge completed the cut, he had forgotten to control the flames of insatiable hunger. Well, it was not a problem.
’Good.’
He turned around and saw the other six Superior Xenons that had been circling at the edges of buildings had frozen the instant the demon died.
They were in a suspended state that lasted roughly a few seconds while whatever instruction they’d been running on collapsed into nothing, like a puppet with cut strings going slack before his own instincts took over.
He was already moving before the seconds were up.
The first Superior Xenon activated out of its suspension just in time to register him closing the distance, and then Sorrow’s Edge was already through it — a flat diagonal cut that began at the left shoulder-joint if it was a shoulder, to a seemingly part that looked like a heart and for a fraction of a second the massive pale body remained standing, intact, before the purple flame ran the line of the cut and the two halves vanished individually.

He pivoted.
The second one that was nearby used its massive hand like growths to slam him from above. Ishiki sidestepped, let the attack land in the space he’d vacated, and drove the point of Sorrow’s Edge down through the hand like structure.
The Xenon afraid of dying, cut his own hand though his moth before the flames reached his body. But that distraction ended in the Sorrow’s Edge passing straight though its head.

[You have Received 500 Data Fragments]
The two normal Xenons had flanked while he delt with the second Superior Xenon. As they closed in on him… Ishiki spun round like a slasher and the Xenon’s bodies were cut in two halves.
The two other Superior Xenons were trying to run when they suddenly saw a figure emerge in between them out of nowhere and the next moment their bodies were reduced to nothing… not even leaving ashes behind.
Two notifications arrived simultaneously.

[You have Slain a Superior Xenon]
[You have Received 500 Data Fragments]
[You have Received a Vestige]
’Heh, a Vestige. That was unexpected.’
Now standing alone in the ruins. Ishiki summoned his system screen and saw the platinum hued window flare to life in front of him.

’Well that was a good farming session indeed.’
Now that he was level 35, there was just one more thing he had to achieve in order to complete his goals before he accept the trial.
He focused on the Vestige option and saw another window flare to life in front of him.
Vestiges – [Aether Blade (Legendary)] , [Hard Nub (Common)], [Berserkers Effigy (Rare)], [Eye of Ruin (Epic)], [Wind’s Embrace (Epic)], [Sorrow’s Edge (Epic)], [Eternal Longing (Rare)], [Help me (Common)]
Ishiki’s eyes twitched looking at the new entry. What a dumb fucking name for a vestige.
’Is… is that even a thing?’ He stopped himself from facepalming and instead closed the window… now was not the time to look at something like that.
He then focused on the skill, [Ghost Blade] and a new window opened in front of him.

======================
He skipped everything and directly looked at the progress bar that showed 118 out of 125.
’Seven more kills,’ he thought. ’In a city full of Xenons.’
The ghost of an ironic almost-smile worked its way briefly onto his face.
’Ask and it shall be provided, apparently.’
He closed the window.
And then he heard a curse.
It was Shiro’s voice, from somewhere in the ruins to the west. It was not a call for help, but the sharp, bitten-off profanity of a man who had just run into a problem that was bigger than his remaining resources could comfortably solve.
Then the crack of a gunshot.
Then silence, for exactly the length of time it took Ishiki to decide he was already running.
He pushed hard through the broken streets and he had only crossed a few buildings when he found Black Suit.
The government agent was face-down in the dust between the remnants of what had once been a covered walkway, his arms at his sides, his body completely still.
Ishiki slowed down and stopped besides him.
He had expected to find him with Shiro, or fleeing with the truck, or anywhere that made logistical sense. He had not expected this.
He crouched beside him and checked that indeed the human was dead. Well it was the only outcome given the shape his head was in.
Ishiki had to find the accurate word for it and the accurate word was blunt and stark — the head was crushed. The skull had ceased to hold its shape, as if something had pressed it from the outside with concentrated, massive force.
The rest of the body was unmarked. His sidearm was still in its holster. His badge was still pinned to his jacket.
This guy had not fought anything by the looks of it. He had died without even knowing who or what the enemy was.
’Camouflage,’ Ishiki thought immediately. ’The Tainted demon, before he came for me, must have killed him.’
He stood, and brought Sorrow’s Edge up in a slow, deliberate arc over the body. The purple flame at the edge spread gently, touching first the coat, then moving inward, and the body dissolved quietly and completely, leaving nothing for the storm-dark ruins to claim.
He bowed his head for the span of two breaths.
’Rest,’ he prayed. ’Whatever it is you’re owed, I hope you get it.’
Then he stood up and ran to where Shiro was, hoping not to find another corpse.
