Chapter 1299 Let's Get Married
Chapter 1299 Let’s Get Married
Xia Zhao just stood there listening to her acting pitifully in front of her godmother’s grave. He was really helpless but he also felt bitter inside. One could imagine how much she missed this woman. But it was out of her control too. After all, this woman had a huge impact on Mu Chenyan’s life.
“Your habit of complaining hasn’t changed, eh?” Mu Chenyan ignored his comment. Of course, her habit didn’t change because she didn’t want to change. Here she felt like she could talk about anything without any burden. She didn’t have to be cautious here. She didn’t have to be the responsible Mu Chenyan here. She was allowed to be just a little girl.
She didn’t have so many things to say even when she went to her own parents’s graves. But it was also understandable. Their bond with her wasn’t as strong as her godmother’s. “Auntie must be super tired of listening to you.”
“No way,” she retorted. “My godmother never gets tired of me. She loved me so much. How could she ever be tired of me?”
“I suddenly have a thought.”
“What?”
“It seems like you treat Yue Fai the same way Auntie treated you.”
“I learned to be the best godmother from her,” replied Mu Chenyan. “I think if she hadn’t loved me the way she did, I wouldn’t have known how to love Fai. I learned a lot from her. A lot. But I’m still different from her. I don’t beat Fai.”
“Auntie didn’t beat you too,” reminded Xia Zhao.
“There is something wrong with your memory, Zhao!” said Mu Chenyan. “She chased me all over the house with her feather duster.”
“Because you broke her favorite vase while playing basketball in the living room even when she reminded you three times to go outside to play.”
Mu Chenyan pursed her lips and couldn’t refute for a moment. She thought of something else and added, “Oh, what about the time she threw her slipper at me?”
“You threw your cold medicine down the drain,” said Xia Zhao. “You should be glad that she at least waited for you to recover from the cold before picking up her slipper to beat you. See, how much she cared about you?”
“It was too bitter and I was certain that I could recover from the cold without that medicine.”
“What about the time you set her dress on fire?”
“It was an accident. An accident.”
“You also lost her engagement ring that she loved very much.”
“I spent the entire night looking for it too.”
“And you also pulled Hulin along with you to work with you.”
“That’s my brother. I can order him around. You can’t tell me otherwise.”
“I definitely can’t. Since I also worked as your slave.”
Mu Chenyan gave him a look, “Are you here to remind me of all the wrongdoings of mine?”
“I haven’t even begun yet,” he said. “You know we can spend a week talking about all the troubles you caused and in comparison how nice Auntie had been to you.”
Mu Chenyan pouted, “Well, she was indeed very nice. Or else if she was like my maternal aunt, she would have already thrown me out of the house when I made my first mistake.”
“Why are you bringing up unimportant people?”
Mu Chenyan shook her head, “It just suddenly came to my mind.” She took a deep breath and said, “Aren’t you gonna say hi to my godmother? You haven’t seen her in so long too.”
“I just came to say hello to her last month,” replied Xia Zhao surprising her a little. “You did?”
“I did. I brought her favorite flowers.”
Mu Chenyan’s eyes narrowed as she asked, “Are you the one who has been bringing her flowers over the years?”
“Yes,” answered Xia Zhao honestly. “Whenever I passed by here, I’d come to see her.”
“Tsk. No wonder she used to say you’re a very filial person and I didn’t agree.”
“No, you’re right. I am most unfilial person to my parents.”
Mu Chenyan didn’t want to bring this topic up. It’s not like she didn’t know anything about his differences with his parents. He wasn’t that unfilial too. He was always there when his parents needed him. Even when his mother faked her illness a hundred times, he’d still go to see her. Even if he knew all too well that she was just faking it.
She suddenly took his hand in her own and looked at the tombstone saying, “You see this? I really ended up holding this hand. I thought I should bring him here to announce this news since you had been the person who wanted us to be together for a very long time. You even made a bet with me that I’d hold this hand no matter how much I say I don’t want to.”
Xia Zhao patted her head and said, “Auntie, you don’t have to worry about anything now. I will keep my promise. Since I was able to hold this hand, I’d never let it go. I’ll love her and I’d try my best that she doesn’t miss you too much. I can’t say she won’t miss you at all because that will be impossible. I can’t take your place in her life, but I promise to love her mora than anyone else.”
“Are you here to meet her parents?” asked Mu Chenyan. “Why are you making these promises like you are asking my hand in marriage?”
“If she was really here, I might really ask your hand in marriage right now.”
“That’s so old-fashioned thing to do.”
“Yes, I’m not as cool as you and not so trendy too. Don’t you already know that though?”
Mu Chenyan sighed, “Indeed, I know it all. I chose this boring one on my own.”
“I don’t think there isn’t a better option than this boring one,” he said being a bit narcissistic.
“I had many options,” she told him. “It’s just that, it’s true that none of those options could love me more than you. And no one knew me better than you. I didn’t have any fear around you. I don’t have to be cautious or pleasing. I don’t have to change anything. If anything, I can even let out my vulnerabilities and fears without any thought.”
“You seem to trust me too much.”
“I trust myself. And I know that you don’t dare dislike me.”
Xia Zhao smiled in response, “Right. How will I survive if I disliked you?”
“Correct! I’ll break your knees if you dared to dislike anything about me.”
“Yes, yes. My knees and I won’t give you that chance.”
Mu Chenyan smiled happily and suddenly something came to her mind. She turned to look at him and said, “I feel like this is the worst place to say this but it’s also a right place at the same time.” Xia Zhao gave her an inquisitive look, and silently waited for her to continue. He wondered what she was going to say that made her look so serious all of a sudden. “How about we get married?” action
Xia Zhao felt like he had a very stable personality and nothing could easily shake him. But right now, he was truly shaken for a second.
“What did you just say?”
“I said, let’s get married.”
Xia Zhao didn’t respond immediately but just looked into her eyes, trying to understand her mood. Was this an impulse or was she really serious? “What? You don’t agree?”
“I agree,” he replied immediately. “I have no reason to say no. Why would I say no? Even when it was just about responsibility, all I thought about was to marry you back home. And now, it’s about my love for you. How can I refuse? I feel like I have waited for this for far too long already. I wouldn’t wanna wait any longer.”
“That’s what I think too,” she said. “It’s just as you told me before. We really don’t have another twenty years to waste. We aren’t even sure if we have another day that we can waste. Because who knows what tomorrow is gonna bring. But today, at this very moment, in front of my godmother, I truly feel like I want to marry you. I have nothing fear and nothing is holding me back anymore.” She took a pause and added, “Godmother said one day when I fell in love, I’d understand why she was so impulsive enough to dig a trap for Godfather just so she could get close to him. Why she wanted to bind him to herself without any regret. I seem to understand a little now. I also wanna tie you to myself. I didn’t like the last incident of just any woman coming up to say that she was your fianceĆ©.”
Xia Zhao did not expect this surprise at this moment for sure. He looked in to her eyes lovingly and tucked her hair behind her ear, “Then let’s get married. I’m always ready for it.”
