"After learning Rage Fist, Primeape evolves into Annihilape. Once its rage exceeds a critical threshold, it gains the power to free itself from the restraints of its physical body."

"After learning Hyper Drill, Dunsparce evolves into Dudunsparce, and its body develops two segments. Its temperament also becomes slightly more aggressive."

Roggenrola had been discovered one hundred years ago.

Golett had appeared three thousand years ago.

Klink was believed to be approximately two hundred years old.

Baltoy had existed for at least twenty thousand years.

They all shared a common characteristic.

Each possessed an unidentified energy core or could produce the energy necessary to maintain its own existence simply by moving.

"I don’t know how many of you are aware of what happened recently in Hoenn," Professor Juniper continued. "An enormous meteorite approached the region and nearly destroyed it, until the inheritor of an ancient Mega Evolution legacy appeared."

"Mega Evolution?!"

Professor Sycamore jolted upright.

When he noticed everyone staring at him, he immediately waved his hands in embarrassment.

"No, it’s nothing. Please continue."

"We heard about the incident, but we don’t know the details. My apologies. Please go on!"

He had certainly never heard that Rayquaza could Mega Evolve.

Professor Sycamore’s expression became awkward. He flipped through the documents in his hands and folded several pages over.

Evidently, he had decided not to present those pages after all.

Professor Juniper watched the researchers’ intense reactions, and a hint of emotion entered her expression.

Wasn’t this exactly what a researcher hoped to witness when presenting such monumental findings at a conference of this caliber?

And that had merely been the prelude to the true centerpiece!

Professor Juniper drew a deep breath and displayed Rotom’s data.

An electrical motor.

A Pokémon capable of entering electronic devices.

The moment she revealed that information, another enormous uproar swept through the hall.

Professor Rowan even stood to verify the report.

He explained how a mysterious Pokémon capable of entering household appliances had appeared in Sinnoh more than a decade ago before suddenly disappearing.

He also produced the scattered originals of the relevant documents, while Professor Juniper displayed photocopies.

"More of the research appears to have been hidden by a certain researcher..."

Professor Rowan had uncovered several clues concerning Charon.

Charon had previously operated in the Johto region and appeared to have possessed limited connections to Team Rocket.

They could no longer verify whether Charon had owned the Old Chateau. Even the two ghosts haunting the building knew nothing about him.

However, they had found that room.

That allowed them to draw several logical conclusions.

Professor Hastings also rose and described a practical demonstration in which Hikaru had instructed Rotom to enter an electrical appliance.

Professor Rowan then played a video recording of Dawn’s Rotom completing the entire process of transforming through different household appliances.

Developing different motors would allow Rotom to assume different forms.

At present, however, only five such motors existed.

As for their developer—and the person who had originally discovered Rotom...

"The discoverer of Rotom was a man named Cyrus!"

A wave of noise swept through the venue.

The Sinnoh researchers were the most agitated.

They had already heard about Team Galactic. More importantly, the rumored leader of Team Galactic, the head of the Galaxy Expedition Team’s space-development enterprise, and the president of both the Galactic Foundation and Galactic Appliances were supposedly the same man.

That man was Cyrus.

The mysterious disappearance of such an influential corporate president had stirred considerable public controversy throughout Sinnoh.

Professors and researchers from distant regions were unfamiliar with the name. However, the intensity of the Sinnoh researchers’ reactions naturally aroused their curiosity.

"This newly discovered Pokémon could revolutionize electronics and mechanical engineering!"

Endless possibilities were emerging before their eyes.

Bill, Celio, Brigette, and the other developers of Pokémon Storage Systems had already begun imagining ways to improve their transfer networks.

They were stunned!

Dr. Kaminko, who had traveled all the way from Orre and was infamous for his "useless inventions," immediately understood Rotom’s enormous potential.

Even his garbage machines might—

"When Rotom enters a poorly constructed appliance," Professor Juniper added, "it becomes weak and listless."

"Cough!"

Dr. Kaminko nearly fell out of his seat.

His fantasy had just collapsed!

It appeared that the road toward transforming his garbage inventions into worldwide bestsellers remained long and difficult.

Come on!

Why did a small problem like poor electrical performance matter so much?

Couldn’t Rotom overcome it with sheer determination?

If that was the case, perhaps Porygon had a brighter future.

Now was the time to bring in the next speaker.

Arrogance required a hidden reserve of energy.

Fortunately, Professor Juniper possessed exactly that.

"Researcher Hikaru, please come to the stage."

Professor Juniper invited Hikaru forward while Roseanne introduced him.

Although he had already given a brief introduction earlier, his résumé was still rather intimidating.

Fennel rested her chin on her hand in the audience.

Professor Burnet flipped through her documents.

Professors Rowan and Magnolia watched solemnly.

Spencer Hale concentrated with his full attention.

Professor Oak appeared deeply interested, while Professor Elm looked slightly excited.

Lusamine narrowed her eyes, studying Hikaru with caution.

Here it came.

The Island Kahuna’s report!

The remaining researchers listened with all kinds of expectations and private thoughts as Professor Juniper addressed them from the stage.

"If there is anything you don’t understand, please feel free to ask questions. We will answer them one at a time!"

When she finished, Professor Juniper nodded to Hikaru, signaling that she was handing the stage over to him.

She had not completely understood everything in the sections that followed. She needed to compare Hikaru’s documents with her own before she could even read through them properly.

Besides...

She would leave the glory to the person standing beside her.

No matter how they looked at it, Hikaru had personally investigated the phenomena, while Juniper had merely verified his findings.

An investigator who worked on the front lines faced considerable danger.

Hikaru cleared his throat and began explaining the rest of their findings.

This was his first time standing before such an enormous gathering.

Fortunately, much of the material had already been verified through Professor Juniper’s tireless work. All the necessary data was remarkably complete.

She had prepared exceptionally well for this conference.

Hikaru had to honor Juniper’s efforts.

As her research partner, he couldn’t retreat at the last moment.

"Professors, it’s a pleasure to meet you. My name is Hikaru."

Although that was theoretically correct...

The thought nearly caused Sonia to shed the bitter tears of an academic small fry.

If she visited the Dimensional Research Lab for advanced study, wouldn’t Hikaru still technically be its deputy director?

He appeared to have other work planned for the future, so she might not encounter him by the time she completed her studies.

But still...

No!

She had to invent something too.

Only then could she escape her status as the institute’s academic small fry!

Sonia didn’t know it yet, but she really would eventually invent something that could technically be described as patented technology, even if it never became particularly widespread.

The accursed Pokémon tracking device.

It located specific Pokémon by gathering their footprints.

That sounded impressive, but unless one collected one hundred percent of the required footprints, the machine couldn’t find anything.

"I will now continue the presentation," Hikaru said. "This is where we truly leave the field of ’Origins’ and enter the field of Regional Ecology."

"The fourth Origin of Regional Ecology: competition between species."

"In Paldea, Bisharp developed a natural enemy that fought against its population—Tinkaton."

"As a result, Bisharp were forced to abandon their original small groups and organize themselves into armies."

"Under this external pressure, the strongest leaders of those large armies developed a new Evolution: Kingambit."

Professor Sycamore once again had the most complicated reaction.

He immediately turned toward Professor Rowan.

The theory really had been overturned?!

The previously revealed Pokémon might still be explained as new changes produced by moves or items—changes that had simply gone undiscovered in the past.

But Bisharp had genuinely been forced to evolve!

And if someone claimed the Leader’s Crest counted as an item, that crest was part of Bisharp’s own body!

"I don’t have a Kingambit with me, but Archaludon can verify this principle," Hikaru said. "Please look."

He sent out Archaludon.

The garbage-collecting dragon immediately searched for something to pick up. Unfortunately, the stage floor was cleaner than the glass in Macro Cosmos Tower.

There wasn’t a single piece of garbage anywhere.

"Duraludon can already fight Tyranitar, and yet it really evolved..."

The assembled researchers could hardly believe their eyes.

"Professor Rowan, isn’t Evolution supposed to be a process through which a weaker Pokémon becomes stronger and more complete?" Professor Sycamore asked.

"Duraludon was already that powerful, yet it could evolve even further?"

"What should we call this? Reaching greatness too early?"

"And since it evolves through exposure to a special metal, doesn’t that mean we could identify Duraludon’s Egg Group and obtain its evolved form while it was still extremely young?"

Professor Sycamore shook his head slightly, wearing a strange expression as he clenched his right fist.

"Professor... The more I study Evolution, the less I understand it."

Professor Rowan could only smile helplessly.

"Sycamore, have you forgotten? Some Pokémon that evolve too early lose access to part of their potential. That is the price they pay."

"Still, Archaludon genuinely overturns established academic theory."

"When I learned of its existence, half my Theory of Evolution had already been disproven."

"But that cannot be helped. Who could ever claim to understand everything about Pokémon?"

"Sycamore, you must think carefully."

"The modern history of humanity’s scientific study of Pokémon spans only a few decades."

"The fifth Origin of Regional Ecology: convergent evolution," Hikaru continued.

"A Pokémon resembling Tentacruel has appeared in Paldea. However, it is actually a terrestrial species known as Toedscruel."

"Please look closely."

"Although their appearances are extremely similar, Toedscruel is actually the Woodear Pokémon."

"It has absolutely nothing to do with Bebe and may be more closely related to Amoonguss."

"The sixth Origin of Regional Ecology: regional forms."

"This phenomenon is not limited to Paldea."

"As everyone knows, regions such as Alola and Galar possess unique local Pokémon whose appearances differ from those observed across most of the world."

"Sometimes, convergent Evolutions are mistakenly identified as regional forms."

As usual, Hikaru brought out Weezing.

The moment Capitalist Weezing appeared in the conference hall, it looked around in astonishment.

Whoa!

There was an audience!

It wasn’t afraid, but having so many people staring at it from below the stage felt rather strange.

Then Capitalist Weezing realized what was happening.

Its boss was asking those people for Poké Balls.

Was this an audience-participation segment?

Why did one of those fellows look different from it?

Samson Oak, who looked like a suntanned version of Professor Oak, had come over with Professor Kukui.

"Like Galarian Weezing, some regional forms have existed since ancient times. Others emerged through mutations."

"All of them were influenced by Regional Ecology."

"In Sinnoh’s past, there were even Pokémon known as Hisuian forms."

Hikaru brought out Lilligant.

This was the first time Hisuian Lilligant had appeared before the world’s researchers.

Her appearance caused an even greater sensation than Galarian Weezing’s.

Galarian Weezing was at least a Pokémon that still existed in the modern world.

But no one had ever seen a Hisuian form!

"Is this a lost form?!" Samson Oak exclaimed.

"That is what we mean by power that transcends time," Professor Oak said. "In different eras of the past, the same Pokémon species could possess different forms."

"When regional forms appear, their Types can also change."

"Not only their Types," Hikaru added. "A Pokémon’s capabilities—what the academic community quantifies as base stats—can also change. Even its Ability may be completely different."

"Lilli~!"

Hisuian Lilligant twirled gracefully.

She had originally intended to demonstrate a kick and show off her Hustle Ability.

However, the enormous screen probably wouldn’t survive one of her kicks, so she abandoned the idea.

"Forms that transcend time are not limited to Hisuian forms."

"Pichu!"

Spiky-eared Pichu emerged.

Hikaru placed her on the lectern.

"Judging by her appearance, it might seem as though one of her ears is merely covered in unruly fur."

"In truth, this Spiky-eared Pichu is also my partner."

"She has completely lost the possibility of Evolution."

"Exposure to energy from a distant time caused her to lose the ability to evolve."

A true Partner Pikachu never had to worry about accidentally evolving after coming into contact with a Thunder Stone.

Partner Eevee offered an even simpler solution to the question that troubled countless people: How should Eevee evolve?

The answer was simple.

It shouldn’t.

Partner Eevee could learn an absurd assortment of moves without evolving.

Besides, aside from Sylveon, only Vaporeon and Umbreon were consistently effective among Eevee’s Evolutions.

Espeon was barely acceptable.

Several of the others possessed impressive Attack or Special Attack, but their move pools, Speed tiers, and other attributes were difficult to praise.

"Pika Papow."

Hikaru issued the command to Spiky-eared Pichu.

"Pichu!"

Pichu erupted with electricity.

A powerful current illuminated the entire conference hall, leaving the researchers astonished.

That was only natural.

She carried the Zap Plate with her.

Although she remained physically weak, her electrical power was far greater than that of an ordinary Pichu.

Her base stats hadn’t changed only because she suffered from the limitations placed on special individuals in older generations.

One could even say the Zap Plate compensated for the capabilities she had been denied.

Professor Kukui sprang to his feet, wearing an astonished expression.

"Sir Hikaru, that move just now... Unless I’m mistaken, it wasn’t Thunderbolt."

"Why did it resemble...?"

Rapid Strike Style Urshifu emerged with its arms folded and its eyes closed, calmly standing upon the stage.

Many researchers didn’t understand what they were seeing.

Hikaru displayed a comparison between the Types and martial-arts styles of Single Strike Style Urshifu and Rapid Strike Style Urshifu.

"What is happening here?" Professor Hastings asked. "Is this also related to Regional Ecology?"

"This concerns your particular field of expertise, Professor Hastings," Hikaru replied. "I believe the answer lies in the heart."

"The heart changes in response to Regional Ecology."

Hikaru retold the story of Kubfu traveling alongside humans.

After mastering different styles of martial arts, Kubfu evolved into Urshifu with different Types.

Over at least a century, those martial traditions had diverged and produced the two forms that existed today.

Professor Hastings was deeply shaken.

"The study of the mind... That’s right! This is the heart!"

"An angry heart and a tranquil heart."

"According to this data, practicing different martial arts under different environmental conditions produces different Evolutions."

"This cannot be classified as a change caused by civilization."

"No, it should be classified as a change resulting from living alongside humans as companions!"

"Emotions possess energy. There can be no doubt about that."

"The Capture Styler I developed operates through emotion and the transmission of those feelings."

"But I never imagined emotions could produce a change like this!"

Professor Hastings wasn’t a conventional Pokémon researcher, but the discovery still excited him.

It might provide tremendous inspiration for developing a new model of Capture Styler.

Combined with the Ranger Sign cards Hikaru had previously given him, Professor Hastings had already begun developing several new concepts.

Overcome with excitement, he struck the floor with his cane.

"If a Capture Styler represents a human attempting to understand a Pokémon, then Urshifu represents a Pokémon understanding humans and changing as a result!"

"Exactly! It actively strove to change in response to human hearts and the knowledge humans imparted to it!"

"This provides compelling evidence of the bonds that can arise between humans and Pokémon—and how those bonds can generate changes across the passage of time."

"Everyone, imagine this!"

"When the first variant of Urshifu appeared in ancient times, wouldn’t the martial artist who trained beside it have believed that the Pokémon developed that special form in response to the bond they shared?"

Hikaru nodded.

"Pokémon and humans born within the same regional ecosystem are beings composed of the same fundamental matter."

"In other words, they possess similar hearts, think in similar ways, and are forms of life capable of understanding one another."

The words spoken by the Hiker in Canalave City once again supported this conclusion.

Precisely because humans and Pokémon could understand one another, they could trade places, live together, and even marry.

Blue’s earlier claims had not been groundless.

Understanding was one of the gifts bestowed by the three lake guardians.

It was itself part of this world.

"Archaludon was born in response to the development of civilization," Hikaru continued.

"Galarian Weezing resulted from a pollution-induced mutation caused by human activity."

"Urshifu represents a response of the heart."

"Spiky-eared Pichu was influenced by time."

"Hisuian Lilligant changed through environmental transformation."

"Some of these Pokémon are regional forms, while others underwent abnormal changes caused by energy."

Did Regional Ecology never appear in the games?

No.

Alolan Raichu’s Pokédex entry explicitly stated that the cause of its unique appearance remained unknown.

Researchers had no concrete explanation, believing only that Alola’s climate, natural environment, and food had influenced it.

As for Pokémon Adventures, the entire FireRed and LeafGreen arc had described the relationship between Deoxys and different regional environments.

Although in practice, Deoxys could switch Formes almost anywhere as long as a meteorite was present.

Another Pokémon strongly connected to Regional Ecology was Vivillon.

The patterns on its body are affected by the climate and environment of the place where it was born. Twenty known patterns exist.

"Some differences are determined at birth, including sexual dimorphism and regional forms," Hikaru explained.

"Other forms can be switched under different conditions through the use of items or similar methods."

As a pioneer in the anime’s study of tropical Pokémon—and an important character who had also appeared in a movie—Professor Ivy had conducted limited Egg Group research during the early era when the Pokémon world remained small and Professor Elm hadn’t yet appeared.

Her work directly inspired the genuine regional forms introduced after the seventh generation, and even the concept of convergent evolution.

She could truly be considered a pioneer in the field.

She had previously published an "Interim Report on Regional Differences and Adaptability Among Pokémon" in Pokémon Research Monthly.

Professor Oak had praised it as exceptionally well written.

The emphasis on patterns immediately attracted the attention of Professor Kukui, Samson Oak, and Professor Mirror.

"Alolan Marowak possesses patterns different from those seen on Marowak in Kanto," Samson Oak said. "Exceptionally powerful specimens possess an aura of light."

"It is said that their feelings for their companions produced something resembling a spiritual connection with the divine, causing their appearances to change."

Professor Mirror pondered the matter.

"Pokémon in the Lental region glow. They possess different patterns. They are surrounded by light."

The two professors spoke simultaneously, as though they had realized the same thing.

"Exactly!" Hikaru said. "Light is both a medium through which energy propagates and one of the most important forms in which energy manifests!"

"Alola possesses a tradition known as the island challenge."

"Those entrusted with Sparkling Stones who complete the island challenge may obtain Z-Crystals—crystallized symbols of light."

"By pouring their full strength, heart, and spirit into their Pokémon, Trainers generate resonance and unleash immensely powerful Z-Moves!"

"Synchronizing one’s power with a Pokémon also resembles another phenomenon."

"Mega Evolution!"

"In Alola, Pokémon possessing a powerful aura of light grow larger, become more ferocious, and receive a constant increase to their capabilities."

For once, Big Sis Flutter allowed her eyes to return to their glowing red state and emitted a shrill, cackling laugh.

However, this was not an appropriate occasion for misbehavior.

Flutter Mane floated into the shadows, leaving only astonished exclamations behind.

Professor Elm adjusted his glasses.

"Was that a Misdreavus?"

"But judged as an individual specimen, its size was far too exaggerated!"
