Maskbound: The Ultimate Hunter

Chapter 99 The Foreman's Fist

  • Next Chapter

A deafening shockwave reverberated through the dispatch office as Foreman Gendo lunged forward with explosive physical velocity. His reinforced right gauntlet ignited with pressurized crimson mana, driving the mechanical pistons forward with the concussive power of an industrial rock-crusher.

Ren dropped into a low braced stance, locking his reinforced shield against his shoulder and channeling his unmasked core strength directly into the frame.

The colossal fist collided with the center boss of the shield in a blinding explosion of sparks.

The immense concussive impact shattered the floorboards beneath his feet, blasting him eight paces backward through the doorway into the main compressor hall. His left arm went completely numb from the bone-jarring collision, the internal leather straps tearing under the overwhelming brute force of an experienced physical combatant.

Ren rolled across the gravel ballast, rising smoothly to his feet with his hooked sword drawn while assessing the structural damage to his defensive gear.

"Your little boar face cannot bridge the physical chasm between a novice hunter and a seasoned company executive!" Gendo shouted, stepping through the splintered doorway with a predatory sneer across his scarred jaw. "I will shatter that shield into scrap and bury you beneath the foundations of this mountain!"

Ren backed along the railway line, keeping his eyes locked onto the hydraulic gauntlet as steam hissed from its secondary exhaust valves.

He noted with sharp tactical precision that the internal pneumatic pistons required two full seconds to vent pressure before reloading into the primary firing cylinder. That brief mechanical reset represented the only exploitable vulnerability in the corrupt director's otherwise impenetrable physical assault.

Akane fired a volley of magnetized suppression bolts from behind an overturned desk, striking Gendo's chest armor with sharp ringing impacts.

"Ren, do not trade direct blows in the open corridor!" Akane called out over the grinding machinery of the ventilation bay. "Lure him into the turbine bay where the steam lines will constrain his attack angles!"

Gendo brushed aside the magnetic bolts with a casual sweep of his left forearm, stepping over the railway sleepers as his aura surged with destructive momentum.

Steam howled through the pressure valves above the railway tracks, filling the upper ceiling with vapor as the roaring machinery drowned out the distant sounds of battle. Ren shifted his stance on the ballast, feeling the thermal wash settle against his neck while he prepared his next tactical maneuver.

He narrowed his gaze as Gendo closed the distance with terrifying speed, knowing that a single direct punch could shatter his ribs instantly.

Ren tapped his temple, swapping instantly to his Storm Wolf mask as he darted between two steam distribution conduits.

A sudden burst of azure wind accelerated his sprint, allowing him to evade Gendo's sweeping haymaker by a fraction of an inch.

The colossal fist struck the distribution conduit instead, punching a crater into the casing and releasing a deafening geyser of superheated vapor. The scalding cloud billowed across the walkway, obscuring Gendo's vision while Ren circled around the generator housing to strike from the rear flank.

Ren touched his fingers to the floor, engaging his Glassfoot Spider mask to map the exact distribution of shockwaves across the foundation.

The vibrational pulses mapped Gendo's solid footing as the furious foreman stomped through the steam clouds, his right arm recharging with pressurized hydraulic mana.

Tapping his Firecrest Salamander mask, Ren projected a concentrated beam of crimson flame directly toward Gendo's exposed neck seal.

The intense thermal blast scorched the protective collar beneath Gendo's helmet, forcing the roaring foreman to spin around with flailing arms while cursing the persistent hunter. The searing heat forced the company commander to raise his guard, creating a brief window for Ren to reposition along the outer catwalk.

Ren adjusted the leather pouch at his belt, confirming that his remaining two hundred and seven silver coins stayed secured against his hip during the rapid maneuvers.

High above the machinery floor, Akane adjusted the tension on her pneumatic launch rig while tracking Gendo's erratic movement patterns through the billowing white clouds.

"His gauntlet vents after every major surge..." Akane observed through her targeting scope as she loaded another magnetic spool into the firing chamber. "The steam relief valve at his wrist pops open for two seconds whenever he overcharges the piston stroke!"

Ren acknowledged her warning with a tight nod, knowing that surviving the next hydraulic swing remained the single greatest challenge of the entire expedition.

In the secondary corridor behind the compressor bay, six armed company guards attempted to circle around toward the civilian evacuation shaft.

Reiji stepped out from the shadows of the ventilation flue, his twin hunting hatchets gleaming with keen edges as he blocked the doorway. His wide frame filled the passage completely, daring the advancing mercenaries to test the resolve of a veteran frontier tracker who knew every inch of Kurotake.

"Halt right there, company lackeys!" Reiji announced in a booming, unyielding voice that echoed through the intake corridor. "You take one more step toward those fleeing workers, and I will bury both of these hatchets in your chest plates!"

The lead mercenary leveled a shock baton, barking an arrogant command to the seasoned frontier tracker.

"Foreman Gendo ordered the immediate capture of all escaping laborers..." the mercenary yelled, gesturing aggressively with his weapon. "Stand aside or face execution for treason against the corporate consortium!"

"My contract is registered with the Hunter Guild, not a corrupt mining syndicate!" Reiji retorted with fierce defiance, parrying the shock baton with a swift deflection that disarmed the guard instantly. "No company butcher touches those miners while I draw breath in this quarry!"

Reiji swept his second hatchet in a swift horizontal backhand, striking the second guard's shoulder plate and driving him backward into the masonry. His unyielding defense anchored the escape threshold, allowing Yui to escort the final wounded miners into the upper ventilation drift without interference.

Shizuka stepped up beside Reiji, her magnetic restraining cords humming with electrical energy as she secured the subdued guards against the reinforced stanchions.

"The escape shaft is completely secured, hunter..." Shizuka reported in a crisp, disciplined tone as she clicked the mechanical locks into place. "Every civilian has cleared the lower extraction gallery, so Ren can fight without worrying about collateral casualties!"

Reiji wiped a smear of soot from his forehead, flashing a grim grin as he kept his hatchets raised toward the trembling survivors among the guard detail.

"Tell the kid to tear that foreman's mechanical arm off at the shoulder..." Reiji said with a harsh chuckle, listening to the thunderous crashes echoing from the compressor hall. "A bloated bureaucrat like Gendo needs to learn what happens when he pushes honest miners into the dirt!"

Back in the compressor hall, Gendo burst through the dissipated vapor curtain, swinging a sweeping backhand strike aimed directly at Ren's head.

Ren ducked beneath the whistling arm, pivoting on his heel to drive his hooked sword into the unarmored joint beneath Gendo's right shoulder. The tempered blade bit into the protective under-suit, carving a shallow red furrow before Gendo's dense muscle fibers halted the weapon's penetration.

Gendo grunted in sudden irritation, retaliating with a brutal left hook that caught Ren squarely across the cheekbone.

The concussive blow sent Ren spinning across the turbine platform, his vision blurring momentarily as his bruised ribs flared with sharp discomfort. Switching masks could grant specialized abilities and elemental affinities, but magical masks offered no instant healing for bruised bones or strained muscle tissue.

Ren wiped the blood from his mouth, using the frame of the primary steam compressor to pull himself back to his feet.

"You have remarkable stamina for a frontier rat..." Gendo growled, circling the turbine with his hydraulic gauntlet venting fresh steam pressure across the walkway. "Let us see if your broken ribs can withstand one final point-blank impact against the main pressure valve!"

The massive foreman took two heavy strides forward, raising his right fist as crimson lightning crackled along the reinforced pneumatic tubes.

Ren observed the winding gear of the overhead crane, calculating the exact distance between the eastern machine alcove and the main steam turbine. He needed Gendo to commit entirely to a single devastating strike, forcing the corrupt supervisor to expend all available mana in one concentrated forward burst.

Akane deployed a high-frequency magnetic guide wire across the upper ceiling rafters, launching three grounding pins directly into Gendo's left pauldron.

The magnetic tether locked onto the plate, jerking Gendo's shoulder backward and throwing his forward lunge off balance by several crucial inches. The momentary disruption gave Ren the split second he needed to retreat toward the reinforced partition Akane prepared near the eastern machine alcove.

Ren deliberately lowered his shield, staggering backward as if his left arm could no longer bear the defensive weight of the reinforced frame.

He leaned against the upright beams of the partition, feigning complete physical exhaustion while his right hand rested lightly upon his sword hilt. Gendo tore the magnetic tether from his pauldron with a furious roar, his eyes burning with sadistic triumph as he saw his opponent cornered against the structure.

"This is where your little rebellion ends, hunter!" Gendo bellowed, stomping his feet into the floor as bright crimson mana engulfed his gauntlet. "Die in the dark like the rest of your pathetic frontier friends!"

Ren waited until the glowing fist was mere inches from his face before executing an instantaneous sideways dive behind the reinforced partition.

The massive hydraulic fist slammed into the partition with explosive force, obliterating the dense structural uprights into flying splinters. The concussive blast blew through the partition, but the dense structure absorbed the primary shockwave, leaving Gendo's extended right arm locked in the two-second pneumatic venting cycle.

Ren landed smoothly behind the prepared alcove, his fingers instantly reaching for the edge of his next mask as the perfect counterattack window opened before him.

The pneumatic exhaust hissed loudly from Gendo's gauntlet valves, signaling the absolute mechanical vulnerability of the corporate foreman.

The stage was set for the decisive strike that would shatter the foreman's mechanical terror and liberate Mount Kurotake forever.
