Maskbound: The Ultimate Hunter

Chapter 89 Bone-Anchor

  • Next Chapter

The Reach's recovery ran on ceremony, the region's law restored but its confidence needing months, plus the team stayed the first three weeks as witnesses to the whole settling.

The ceremonies ran on soup, the region's recovery catering being universal, every rite attended by broth, bread, plus the Reach's ration of politeness.

The team attended as witnesses plus occasionally as exhibits, the season's survivors pointed out in crowds like weather events, plus fed accordingly.

Children followed them between villages for a week, the small easterners auditing the legends at eye level, plus finding them mostly soup-splattered.

Three villages held mutual-aid festivals by the second week, the Reach's recovery generating its own economy, plus the team credited as founding weather.

Obligations returned to their doorposts village by village, the walking dead retiring home, masks re-hung by families who had watched them leave plus now over-watered them with courtesy.

The funeral courts convened nightly, re-reading settled accounts, the Reach re-filing itself with the thoroughness of a people who had met their creditor plus survived the introduction.

The team testified at eleven courts, Marrin's slate plus Kiva's horn entered as the region's new reference instruments, the survivors' account becoming the Reach's own record.

The courts' verdicts were transcribed by hand, by the woken's new archive staff, sixty years of patient handwriting suddenly employed at the speed of the living.

Two verdicts were appealed by the defendants' masks, the region's law allowing the shell a say, the appeals heard at dusk, plus both withdrawn.

The Bone-Anchor claimed him in the third week, at the dead city's rim, where the founding seam's oldest guardian had woken with the line's restoration.

The guardian was a rook construct, a bone tower of nested ribs, standing at the seam's eastern arc, six centuries at its post, plus newly aware of the season.

It stood its ground like a lighthouse that had outlived the sea, weathering in place, the region's whole memory of watching worn into its bone.

Its first words in living memory were the test's announcement, the construct's voice arriving like geology with a filing schedule.

It tested the team as guardians test, by erasure, the construct's presence un-describing the ground underfoot, the standing test of anything claiming to walk the Reach.

The team stood it badly, then adequately, then well, the rook's field eating their footing, their edges, their described selves, everyone clinging to identity by trade.

The field felt like tide on the ankles of the soul, each pulse subtracting something small, a boot's certainty, a name's spelling, a hand's memory of its own calluses.

Orris stood by blade, described steel, described stance, the family manual holding her name together through six hundred years of remembered parries.

Vell stood by road, the boots remembering paths the ground had forgotten, the family trade outliving geography the way it always had, by stubbornness.

Kiva stood by horn, the instrument's restored notes anchoring her location in the Reach's re-sung law, the third daughter holding her address by music.

Marrin stood by archive, the slate held up like a shield, her own entry in her own hand reading, recorder, present, plus the field declining to argue with paperwork.

The archive-as-shield entered the region's visual lexicon by week's end, the courts commissioning carvings of it, paperwork immortalized in bone.

Otta stood by nothing at all, the blank shell un-describable since intake, the rook's field finding nothing in him to erase that the city had not failed to describe first.

The construct held the test nine minutes, then withdrew the field, plus the rook's nested ribs bowed, the guardian recognizing what the founding line now carried at its center.

The ribs' bow moved air through the whole amphitheater, six centuries of posture bending once, the season's loudest sound that made no sound at all.

The orphan mask, seated in the eldest boundary, had been speaking for him, the claimed debt vouching for its claimant the way doors vouch for their houses.

"You are anchored," the rook said, the voice of bone on bone, slow as geology. "The line holds you. Take the keeping you have already been practicing."

The rook's test was entered in the region's curriculum within the week, the standing exam joining the manual's canon, the season's schooling becoming other people's homework.

Two eastern academies petitioned to observe the next standing, the rook declining by silence, the construct's patience being an exam with a single annual seat.

The single seat was the porter's, the rook ruled, the imprint's terms including tenure, plus the Bone-Anchor entering its second century of instruction with one student, plus grading kindly.

[ New Imprint: Bone-Anchor ]

[ Effect: Stand still inside a rule that wants to erase you. ]

[ Cost: While anchored, you cannot move, cannot be moved, plus the rule remembers you afterward. ]

The imprint settled into the shell's crowded tenancy, the seventh resident, a standing stone among hungers, bells, plus eyes, the mask's boarding house acquiring a load-bearing tenant at last.

The rook taught the anchor's terms in the old way, by demonstration, un-describing the ground under Otta in slow pulses until only the imprint held.

The standing skill was payment for the standing, the lesson running one hour, the imprint learning by enduring, the oldest pedagogy in the Reach.

"An anchored hunter is a boundary," the rook said, concluding. "The Reach will know you as a line of your own. Draw yourself carefully, porter. Lines are remembered here."

The Reach's gratitude arrived by caravan, villages sending what they had, bone carvings, chalk stock, preserved everything, plus one village sending an actual chair, carved, enormous.

The chair required its own cart, its own tarpaulin, plus two drivers who requested photographs with it at every stop, the gift acquiring an entourage eastward.

One village sent a bell, hand-cast, off-key, plus beloved immediately, the team's mission house acquiring a voice for arrivals, departures, plus the occasional opinion.

The chair was for him, the carving reading, for the one who stood, plus the team's laughter at the gift lasted two days plus was entered in the archive twice.

The guild's eastern office sent a formal apology to Kiva, the cull writ rescinded, the captain reassigned to inventory, plus a fruitcake, the guild having somehow learned the season's currency.

"Regret as pastry," Vell said, cataloguing it. "The institutions are learning to bake. This is either progress or the apocalypse."

[ Stage: 10 → 11 ]

[ Board: #131 → #101 ]

[ Bounty: 130,000 → 140,000 ]

Stage Eleven arrived by regional credit, the Reach's courts jointly petitioning the Board, the promotion certified in funeral ink plus delivered by the ex-mayor personally.

"Can solo a high-grade monster," the stage meant, the manuals said, plus the Reach's version of the reading was blunter, carved on the chair's back.

FOR THE ONE WHO FILED THE MONSTER, the chair said, in letters the guides would quote for a generation of eastern hunters plus one porter.

Kiva stayed through the settling, then stayed past it, the horn's restoration having left the third daughter a region's worth of re-surveying plus no family east to help.

Her family's reply arrived by the same caravan, five lines of wagon-code chalked on a plank, the sixth line already written in her mother's hand.

The sixth line read, stay for the interesting part, the family's blessing arriving in inventory, plus the girl staying under its authority.

The family was west, she said, mapping the far roads, six wagons of Kardune chalk plus opinions, plus she would rejoin them eventually, after.

"After what," Orris asked, the question the whole team had been carrying about the girl since the amphitheater.

"After the porter tells me what the fen told him," Kiva said, firelight, spears stacked, the grin arriving plus staying. "He knows. The horn knows he knows. Keeping is a family trade too, plus he is holding a season of it that needs unloading."

'The girl reads ground,' Otta thought, looking at the fire through the ticking aftermath of his hands. 'Fine. The team reads people. It was only a matter of time before the ground read back.'
