Maskbound: The Ultimate Hunter
Chapter 86 The Gravewing Moth
The waste site had grown a crowd of the desperate by the time The Unmasked arrived. Eleven patients were walking toward the dust the moth produced from the city's discarded wounds.
Each one carried an injury the clinics had given up on, from limp to failing organ to pain no surgeon would touch. All of them were drawn to the pale powder that appeared wherever the moth fed.
A porter could have named every injury on sight, since the guild had carried half of them out of the docks at least once.
A woman with a dead hand held it under the falling dust like a cup under a tap. She was waiting for the miracle the city had never managed to give her.
The dust had restored a child's fever overnight, the broadcast claim that had drawn the eleven. No clinic could reproduce the effect from a moth that had to feed to produce it.
A miracle byproduct of a meal, the healing dust required the city's waste to keep coming. Ossian did the math on the feeding cycle and did not like either side of it.
Cassia came with the guild against Ossian's objection, her understanding of the creature sharper than his Dreadweight and more dangerous to the woman carrying it.
She had warned him that the moth was not a monster to kill. It was a mirror of the Class the sponsors had been selling for years.
Cassia's hands had the same pull as the moth, the instinct to move toward pain rather than away from it.
The difference was consent, the moth fed where it landed, Cassia fed where a contract told her to.
"If you kill it, you kill the only honest map of what my body has been doing since I was twenty-three."
Cassia stood at the waste site edge with the moth's dust settling on her sleeve.
"Contain it, and I will tell you whether the mask is mine to take."
Ossian kept his palms open at his sides for the whole walk in.
Ossian had never acquired a mask through conquest rather than death, the method the system reserved for creatures whose identity allowed submission.
'The system is offering me the moth as a conquest mask, a face taken by claiming rather than killing.'
Ossian felt the acquisition path open in a way the Jackal and the Ape never had.
'The creature has to choose to submit, which means I have to make it want to stop.'
As the crowd grew, the moth consumed residue faster, the feeding instinct drawn to the concentration of untreated wounds the patients brought with them.
Cassia read the creature's behavior aloud as Ossian worked, translating the moth's instinct like Maelle reading a metal's stress curve.
"It feeds where the pain is densest, so the crowd is the problem, not the creature."
Cassia directed the containment from the edge of the fence.
"Clear the patients and the moth has nothing to defend."
Ossian used Ironback's open palm to catch the moth's defensive wing-blast without returning the force. He absorbed the impact like a falling ceiling, taking it without harm.
The wing-blast carried the force of every wound the moth had consumed, a stored inventory of the city's suffering released in a single pulse. The moth had eaten half the city's bad week, and all of it had come out at once.
Ossian held it in Ironback like the Directorate's test weight, letting the stored pain sit in his forearm. He returned none of it to the creature that had gathered it.
The catch was the hardest restraint he had ever held. Every instinct told him to spend the stored force while the conquest required him to keep it still.
Every mask before this one had been taken in violence. The Jackal fell in the flood, the Ape in the freight yard, the Mantis in the office collapse.
The moth was the first face he had earned by refusing to swing, a conquest that rewarded restraint over force. His arms still remembered the weight of each of those kills.
Bastien and Tarek cleared the eleven patients without force, walking each one back behind the chain fence. Both of them had carried frightened people out of worse places than this.
The woman with the dead hand was the last to leave, her fingers curling once toward the dust before Tarek guided her behind the fence. She looked back once at the pile, then kept her eyes on the gravel after that.
Settling as the crowd thinned, the moth slowed its feeding without the density of wounds that had drawn it into a defensive cycle.
Ossian knelt at the residue pile with Dreadweight open and empty. He offered the gauntlets as a survival form the creature could choose to accept.
The Gravewing Moth landed on his left gauntlet rather than fleeing. The conquest registered as submission the moment the creature recognized a host who would carry its hunger without selling it.
The dust stopped falling the moment its wings closed on the steel.
[Gravewing Moth has been acquired through conquest]
[Acquisition method: voluntary submission]
[Owned faces: 6]
'The moth chose to land on the gauntlet rather than die for the dust it was making, and the system calls that a conquest.'
Ossian felt the new face settle behind his ribs, cold and patient as a thing that ate decay.
'A mask taken by letting the creature stop is the quietest acquisition I have ever made.'
Cassia watched the acquisition without the relief Ossian had expected. Her face carried the weight of a woman who understood what the mask would cost her.
She did not ask for the face, she did not refuse it. She watched it settle into an inventory that listed her among its candidates without her consent.
The candidacy was the system's, not hers, the mask listing her as a candidate the way it listed every compatible body.
Cassia had spent a year being listed as a product by her sponsors. The mask offered her a new list whose terms she had not been allowed to read.
Nobody in the guild had asked her opinion on the candidacy either.
Maelle spent the prohibition's idle hours building, pricing the legal risk of every relic into the invoice rather than pretending the work was a favour.
She had finished two commissions under the catering licence, each one billed through the third-party caterer. The rate covered the lawyer the guild could no longer afford on its own.
Two commissions had kept the forge warm inside the law. The relics sold as catering equipment to clients who paid the legal surcharge without asking what it covered.
Both buyers had paid in cash on the same afternoon, no questions, no receipts.
The work was honest in the only direction the prohibition allowed, which was sideways.
"Prohibition does not stop the work, it adds a legal surcharge to every hammer stroke."
Maelle initialed the invoice with the bronze line of her relic still warm.
"The client pays the surcharge, and I stop calling the guild a favour."
The Gravewing Moth mask sat in Ossian's inventory beside the others, a face that offered Cassia the freedom from pain her Class had been selling.
Warmth, attachment, plus the ability to feel pleasure made up the mask's later evolution cost. It was the trade a healer would weigh against a lifetime of carrying other people's wounds.
[True Mask candidate: Cassia]
[Compatibility: pending candidate review]
[Evolution cost: progressive numbing of personal attachment]
'The mask would end Cassia's pain quota by making the pain stop mattering.'
'The system lists the cost as the warmth that makes her a healer worth saving.'
Ossian felt the weight of a face that solved the problem by removing the person it afflicted.
'The Gravewing Moth is the kind of rescue that finishes the patient.'
Cassia left the waste site without answering the question the mask had asked her. She took the offer the way she took every wound, in silence, close to the skin.
No sponsor could bill her for the weight of it.
