Maskbound: The Ultimate Hunter

Chapter 80 The Unmasked Hold Their Ground

The final attackers came through the shell's only opening before it finished sealing. They carried counterfeit fragments pulsing with the larval rhythm Ossian had last felt in the auction core.

They were not thieves or demolition men, but wearers, six of them. Each was bonded to a counterfeit mask that Veil Court had stitched from stolen research.

The counterfeits had been built to confuse the new Domain. Each fragment broadcast a false occupant signature meant to overload the shell's new logic, the way static overloads a clear signal.

[Counterfeit occupant signatures detected: 6]

[Domain bond integrity: degrading]

[Recommend Host assume direct control of all defenders]

'I will not assume direct control of my people, not on the third asking either,' Ossian read the recommendation. 'The building serves them, not me, so they defend their own functions.'

Calista parceled the six wearers across six functions before Ossian could centralize the response, trusting each fighter with one piece of the defense.

The building passed each assignment through its own walls, lighting the corridor each fighter owned.

"North junction is Tarek's, the central floor is Seyra's, the east stair is Odelia's," she put her spear across the last corridor. "The workshop wall is Maelle's, the rear corridor is Ossian's, the records room is mine. Nobody in this building waits on the founder to choose."

Bastien took the twelve trainees and the protected candidates into the shell's innermost room. He counted them behind a wall the building had grown for exactly this purpose.

His voice was the only one in the headquarters that did not rise during the fight. His job was to keep the count steady while the fighters kept the walls standing.

Twelve names went into the log in pencil, so the count could be erased if the night went badly.

Ossian took the rear corridor without commanding a single other fighter. He fought the piece in front of him instead of the whole board.

It was the first fight since the building asked him to stop owning his people.

Tarek sealed his counterfeit wearer inside a Seamline box that shrank every time the man moved. The silk closed the false mask's options until the counterfeit rejected its own host.

Seyra built a Rhythm Chain against the second wearer that ended at eight Beats. She used the delayed echo to make the counterfeit fire its pulse at a wall instead of the Domain.

Odelia turned the third wearer's counterfeit signal into a sound she could read. Then she answered it with a Break Note that shattered the false bond's rhythm.

Maelle fused the fourth wearer to the workshop wall with a heat weld. The weld held the counterfeit mask in place until its overloaded rhythm burned out against her relic's cold face.

Ossian drove the fifth wearer's pulse into Ironback's open palm. He spent it back as a Furnace heat pulse that broke the false mask against its own host.

He won his corridor without calling a single order down the line.

Calista took the sixth wearer herself, pinning the counterfeit's pulse against the records room door. That was the door the copied key had opened for the first break-in.

She ended the overload with a Glass Mantis cut that left the false mask in two clean halves on the floor.

[Counterfeit signatures neutralized]

[Domain bond integrity: restored]

[Permanent Domain recognized]

The shell hardened to its finished state as the last counterfeit fell. It sealed the headquarters into a structure the system now recognized as a permanent Domain rather than a claimed lair.

'The shell stopped asking to own the people it protects,' Ossian watched the walls finish their hardening. 'The lair finally learned the difference between a pack asset and a pack member.'

[Domain: The Unmasked Headquarters]

[Status: Permanent]

[Defensible territory bonded to occupant welfare]

The licensing board arrived with the city emergency inspector two hours later. They expected to condemn a building that had been demolished, set on fire, and counterfeited in a single night.

They found eight filed members standing in a headquarters that had grown its own defensive shell. Twelve trainees had followed Bastien's routes to safety, plus six counterfeit wearers restrained under Tarek's silk.

Paloma presented the full casualty report plus the revised insurance premium the assessor had signed during the fight. She added the Domain recognition the system had printed across every interior wall.

"The Unmasked holds a permanent Domain and a building that defended its occupants without classifying them as property," she laid each document in order. "Full licensing is no longer a question of whether, but of when."

The inspector read the casualty count, checked the captured wearers, then looked at the shell that had grown overnight. He signed the full licensing upgrade before he left the building.

The upgrade raised the guild from Class Four to a permanent structural authority over its own territory. It was the first license of its kind the city had issued to a guild refused a single contract a season earlier.

The city clerk had to open a second ledger page for the licence class, since the first page held only refusals.

Paloma filed the upgrade beside the original licence refusal the same authority had issued months earlier. The two documents sat in one folder, a ledger that had corrected itself.

The final accounting left the guild account at thirty-one thousand. That total survived attack repairs, the reduced insurance, payroll for eighteen staff plus trainees, and Paloma's percentage.

[Available tribute: 31,000]

'Eight months ago I could not cover rent on a room with a sticking shutter,' Ossian read the balance the system called tribute. 'Now I am broke inside a building I own, because it chose to defend the people I could not afford to lose.'

After the casualty reports were signed and the trainee's shoulder was re-checked, Calista walked Ossian to the east-concourse room neither of them had slept in.

She did not frame it as forgiveness for the shoulder he had traded. She also refused to frame it as reward for the building he had refused to own.

Opening the door he had written her name beside, she set her spear against the wall. She stayed, the night having cost them both more than separate rooms could hold.

'We are sharing a room because the building almost fell, not because the harm is paid,' Ossian sat on the cot.

She took the chair by the wall, 'Calista will not let closeness erase the shoulder, and I would not want her to.'

Calista kept the chair rather than the cot, giving him the rest without giving him the excuse to think the debt was settled.

"Sleep," she said, "the shoulder and I will both still be here in the morning."

The shell held its shape around them through the first quiet hour the guild had earned. Neither of them needed to fill the hour with anything that was not rest.

Somewhere above them the shell ticked while it cured, a building learning the sound of nobody fighting.

Then a voice rose through the foundation beneath the cot, speaking a designation the larval core had answered to in the auction chamber.

The syllables came up through the floor like water finding a crack.

It was the name of the monster that should have awakened inside the Apex Masquerade System, the host the registration had failed to install.

The voice under the foundation called Ossian by that name. The trainee's bandaged shoulder, the inverted Domain, plus the shared room suddenly felt like things a creature had collected rather than built.

[Apex Bearer designation detected from sub-foundation source]

[Origin: unrecognized]

'The thing the system was built for is still under the building, and it just called me by its own name.' Ossian felt the cot vibrate with the voice through the floor.

'It thinks I am wearing its life, with no idea how to tell it I am not.'
