Maskbound: The Ultimate Hunter

Chapter 74 The Charity Camera

  • Next Chapter

Zoric Amari walked into the headquarters at noon with six motes orbiting his shoulders and a camera crew that had been cleared by nobody at the guild.

The mirrored blade rode his back in a harness built to catch light, every surface polished to a finish that threw reflections across the cracked concourse walls.

Ossian knew the face from every breach broadcast in the country: the trusted jaw, the measured concern, the hero who always arrived after the edit had chosen its villain.

Bastien looked at the camera crew the way he looked at a load strapped wrong, counting the motes before he counted the people.

Calista put her back to the nearest wall and her hand on her spear, refusing to become part of any frame the motes were building.

'A rival apex just entered the lair with six recording insects circling his head,' Ossian watched the motes find their flattering angles around Zoric's jaw, 'and the system calls a camera crew a dominance display.'

Zoric took Ossian's hand before Ossian could refuse it, holding the grip one beat longer than a greeting needed while a mote dropped to eye level between them.

"I have watched the footage of what you are building here, and the country is going to want to help," he released the hand toward the nearest camera, "one charity broadcast covers your insurance quarter, plus a relief fund the viewers build themselves."

"We did not ask for a broadcast," Ossian pulled his hand back to his coat.

"The insurance quarter you cannot afford is the asking," Zoric let the sentence sit, "the country watches whether you invite them or not."

Paloma stepped between them before the handshake's warmth could finish cooling, her licensing file already open to the page where exposure rights lived.

"Coverage of the insurance quarter, plus a viewer fund, in exchange for editorial control of how the guild appears on the broadcast," she read his offer back to him flat, "that is not charity, that is a sponsorship wearing sympathy for a camera."

Zoric smiled the way a man smiles when the negotiation is part of the performance.

"The editorial control protects the families watching, not my image," he let one mote drift closer to Ossian's face, "a secretive founder makes better television than a grateful one, though the money is real either way."

"Independent escrow means the fund passes through hands you do not control," Paloma tapped the clause, "and the guild owns every frame recorded inside a building we hold the lease on."

"Frames I record are my craft, the same way your client's gauntlets are his," Zoric kept the smile for the nearest mote, "a hero cannot give away his own image and stay a hero."

"Then the broadcast films the building and the trainees, never the founder's silence," she wrote the limit into the margin, "you get your poverty footage, you do not get to sell his face as the villain of it."

The crew filmed the cracked west concourse, then the silk stitches Tarek had left across the walls, then the trainees eating cold rations in a loading bay that still leaked when it rained.

Zoric stood among them with his blade catching the strip light, and the footage made the guild's poverty look noble while it made Ossian's silence look like shame.

One director asked a trainee to hold her ration tin toward the light, then asked her to look grateful for it, then asked her to do it again when the first take did not move enough.

Bastien pulled the trainee out of the third take with the flat hand he used on frightened porters, putting himself between the camera and the ration tin.

"She eats because she earned the shift, not because a hero pointed a mote at her," he did not raise his voice, "film the wall, film the leak, leave the rations out of it."

Seyra recognized the staging from a decade of performance shoots, the motes placing the hero at the bright center while the guild filled the shadows around him.

"He is using our building as a backdrop for his own broadcast, and the trainees are the props," she kept her voice below the mote range, "the rescue he is fundraising for never happened on camera."

Ossian would not look at the lens, would not name the system, would not explain Dreadweight for the motes circling his hands.

'He wants me to look secretive so the viewers agree he is the only honest person in the room,' Ossian kept his hands buried deep in his coat, 'and the moment they agree on who he is, his Class gets stronger.'

[Ovation Engine detected]

[Rival apex is accumulating consensus tribute]

[Consensus increases rival dominance]

'The system calls a viewer count consensus tribute, which is exactly the food Zoric's Class eats,' Ossian watched a mote record the trainees' rations for the third take, 'every minute we let him film is a meal he charges to his own power.'

'Books say hating him makes him stronger, ignoring him makes him weaker, yet we just handed the country a reason to watch him inside our own building,' Ossian watched Zoric charm a trainee for a fourth take, 'the only weapon that works on his Class is an audience that cannot agree, and we are the ones on camera.'

Paloma took the editorial clause apart in forty minutes, stripping the image rights out of the contract while leaving the money inside it.

"The guild keeps every recording made inside this building, the fund pays through an independent escrow, with Zoric listed as a guest donor rather than the host of our struggle," she initialed the rewritten terms, "he gets his camera, we keep our face, plus the insurance quarter gets paid by people who came here for him."

Zoric signed the rewritten terms without argument, the money never having been the part he wanted.

'The signature cost him nothing because the broadcast feeds him either way,' Ossian watched the motes keep recording after the contract closed, 'we kept our face and paid the insurance, but we just invited the camera that makes him stronger into our own lair.'

By sundown the viewer fund had cleared the insurance quarter, though staging costs, Paloma's percentage, and the escrow fees had already drawn the spendable account down to thirty-seven thousand six hundred, with the training reserve held untouched at thirty-two thousand four hundred.

[Available tribute: 70,000]

The broadcast aired that night to numbers Paloma had not seen for a guild feature, and the comment threads agreed on one thing before the second commercial break.

Calista watched the comments scroll on Odelia's relay screen, counting the certainty building behind Zoric's name.

"Three million people agreed on him overnight, and the agreement is what his Class burns for fuel," she closed the screen before the count could climb, "we handed him the building, the audience, the whole contract in one signature."

Zoric stood taller in the loading bay the next morning, the mirrored blade throwing brighter reflections than it had the day before, his Class drinking the certainty of a few million viewers who had decided he was the only hero in the building.

'The country just decided he is the only honest man in our headquarters, and certainty is the thing his Class turns into muscle,' Ossian watched Zoric glow a shade brighter under the strip lights, 'we took his money, paid for it in the one currency that makes him harder to beat.'
