Maskbound: The Ultimate Hunter

Chapter 66 The Clockstep Choice

  • Next Chapter

The sponsor contract offered Seyra 180,000 credits if Clockstep Crane entered her body under their exclusive management before sunset.

Paloma placed the real payment schedule beside it, revealing that 120,000 remained conditional on six public appearances she could not refuse.

'Enough money to fund guild registration... shit, one signature buys our problem by selling hers,' Ossian kept the contract on her side of the table, 'don't recommend an answer.'

Calista added the physical-risk page, including ankle failure, audience fixation, plus Rhythm Chain refusal after safe stopping, while Seyra read both documents in the depot office while her Orbit Blades rested unlocked on the floor.

The unlocked weapons allowed anyone present to move them away, a safety choice that made her contract posture look less confident than her face.

Her ankle brace carried the arena authority's repair seal, proving the sponsor had not paid for the injury it now used as leverage.

Beside them, her former handler waited outside with a sponsor medic, insisting the binding required their clinic to protect brand value, while Paloma showed Seyra every number without turning poverty into an argument for acceptance.

"The first payment clears your old treatment debt," she said, pointing at the condition beneath it, "the appearance clause can take the rest back."

Beside them, the reply came through action, "The mask may make retreat feel like humiliation," Calista said, touching her own numb palm, "knowledge doesn't prevent instinct from feeling correct."

'They show money and injury while I contribute silence... damn, leadership sometimes means refusing to sound useful,' Ossian folded his hands, 'let Seyra own the choice.'

The system opened a transfer screen after detecting 94% compatibility, calling the contract a rival claim over a suitable creature.

[A rival Court is attempting to claim a compatible performer]

[The host may secure permanent loyalty through immediate transfer]

'Permanent loyalty isn't what she offered... hell, the system keeps trying to add ownership where none exists,' Ossian closed the screen, 'state the limit.'

He told Seyra the mask could be transferred through The Unmasked without requiring filed membership, employment, or image rights.

The transfer would remain permanent, cost one owned face, plus leave her responsible for every future instinct, while Seyra asked whether he believed she should accept, forcing the recommendation he had decided not to provide.

"I believe both choices cost you," Ossian said, leaving the sponsor paper beside the guild terms, "I won't choose which cost becomes your body."

Her former handler entered without permission and accused The Unmasked of hiding behind consent while benefiting from her power.

Seyra turned the sponsor contract toward him, pointing at a routing code Paloma had marked beneath the clinic fee.

The code matched one of Solenne's archive accounts used to fund the arena opposition before the Crane appeared.

Ione traced the payment through two shell clinics, finding the former handler's approval twelve minutes before Seyra entered the condemned site.

The sponsor had created part of the danger, then priced its protection as proof that ownership was necessary.

'Her handler paid to endanger the trial, then offered ownership over the answer... real service package,' Ossian stood between him and the door, 'preserve evidence.'

Ione recorded the routing code while Paloma froze the sponsor payment under the Veil Court liability order.

The handler tried withdrawing the offer, but Seyra kept her copy and demanded the image-rights release promised after any sponsor misconduct.

Paloma enforced the release before the man left, returning ownership of three years of performance footage to Seyra without a guild claim.

The recovered rights mattered more to her expression than the frozen 180,000-credit promise.

She changed one line in The Unmasked's consent structure, postponing filed membership until she proved she could stop her first supernatural Rhythm Chain.

Paid evacuation work would continue under separate trial contracts if both sides agreed after medical review.

'She accepts the mask but withholds membership from us... good, trust doesn't need every door open at once,' Ossian read the amended line, 'disclose all nine failures.'

He repeated rejection, partial merger, instinct dominance, tissue conflict, skill loss, memory damage, sensory change, fracture transfer, plus death, while Seyra named what she wanted the power for without mentioning sponsors, applause, or gratitude.

"I want movement nobody can edit away from the people I guide," she said, touching the mask with one hand, while Clockstep Crane opened along her forearm before spreading white plates toward both legs.

The first second locked her ankle brace inside the transformation rather than discarding its support.

Maelle watched the brace anchors for heat, ready to stop the transfer if the mask turned medical support into a trapped joint.

Odelia held up Seyra's written stop conditions at eye level, keeping the consent structure visible while speech remained unnecessary.

At three seconds, thin white lines connected her Orbit Blades to the new plates around her calves.

During the fifth second, every observer in the room became a pressure inside her posture, asking for one more clean movement.

'The instinct arrives before ownership leaves me... shit, she can feel us watching already,' Ossian looked down at the contract, 'do not turn transfer into a show.'

Calista faced the wall, followed by Odelia and Maelle, removing four pairs of eyes from the binding.

Paloma kept watching only to witness consent, while Ione recorded the transfer without framing Seyra's body for publication.

At eight seconds, the Crane face left Ossian's inventory and sealed around Seyra's temples as two narrow white crests.

During the tenth second, both Orbit Blades lifted from the floor and locked onto her forearms through magnetic cords.

[Clockstep Crane has chosen a permanent bearer]

[Owned faces: 5]

[Permanent awakenings: 5]

Fracture remained at 52%, though the missing face left Ossian's legs searching for movement that no longer belonged to him.

The transfer also removed Clockstep from his three-mask preparation options, restoring the inventory problem to five owned faces without changing body capacity.

'Owned inventory holds five faces, while permanent awakenings match that total... keep each count in its own box,' Ossian read her amendment, 'six names are filed without Seyra.'

She began the first supervised Rhythm Chain after medical checks cleared her ankle for controlled movement.

The training music came from one low speaker, while Odelia used Chorus through the floor to protect timing without commanding direction.

Seyra's first movement changed position around a practice marker, earning one Beat through a useful defensive angle.

Her fourth Beat increased acceleration, while the eighth produced an echo that completed a delayed turn behind her.

At sixteen, the whole sequence compressed into one finishing pattern that stopped one inch from Calista's waiting spear.

The music ended, and every observer lowered their hands to show the session was complete, while seyra took a seventeenth step anyway, cutting around the marker through a new angle.

"Stop condition," Calista said, moving her spear across the route without striking her.

Seyra redirected into an eighteenth Beat, while the Crane instinct treated Calista's barrier as a demand for a better performance.

'The Rhythm Chain won't accept the ending... damn, this is why she postponed membership,' Ossian removed every remaining spectator from the room, 'reduce the audience.'

Odelia stopped Chorus, the speaker went silent, plus Paloma closed the office viewing window.

Calista ordered everyone except the medical pair beyond the door, reducing observation without pretending the instinct would disappear with an empty room.

Seyra changed direction around the last marker, turning every attempted stop into another useful defense that kept the supernatural count alive.

Ossian held Clockstep's signed consent terms against the window, reminding himself that permanent transfer had never promised immediate control or safe mastery.

The sponsor's frozen money remained outside the guild account, leaving spendable funds at 177,600 and the six filed names unchanged.

Seyra reached nineteen Beats in silence and no audience except the people required to keep her alive, while her first Rhythm Chain refused to end after the training track stopped.

That nineteenth Beat became twenty when Calista blocked the door, proving removal of music and spectators had not restored Seyra's right to stop.

With her brace warning active, Seyra turned toward a twenty-first movement while the ankle strip changed to red.
