Chapter 53 Hollow Raven

The black feather turned east whenever Ossian spoke, pointing toward a waste yard registered to a family-owned medical carrier.

Vaska had already traced Carrion Orchid's corridor beneath three fences, but every scent loop returned to the same empty incinerator.

'A creature remembering routes can walk backward through any trail... scent shows location, not the destination memory chooses,' Ossian entered, 'let sound lie instead.'

Odelia placed four refurbished speakers around the yard while wearing her throat brace and giving directions through a tap board.

The carrier family watched from an office balcony, having requested rescue after their youngest son disappeared during night disposal.

They described him as a volunteer until Paloma found payroll records showing mandatory unpaid shifts attached to future inheritance.

Six other workers had signed identical family-service forms, each promising ownership shares that vanished if anyone refused hazardous disposal.

The missing son held no current shares despite seven years of work, making volunteer status another word for delayed payment.

Paloma asked whether the carrier wanted labour complaints preserved alongside monster evidence, turning private exploitation into an immediate business risk.

"You are using our emergency to renegotiate family arrangements," the father said, looking past every worker gathered below.

"Your arrangement placed an unpaid man inside contaminated waste after midnight, meaning the emergency already negotiated for you," Paloma replied.

'A rescue invoice carrying wages inside it... no speech about fairness, only the price of pretending,' Ossian watched the workers, 'keep them listening.'

Two employees stepped away from the office stair, choosing the yard beside Paloma rather than the balcony beneath their employer.

Vaska required their testimony before entering the nest, since scent trails alone could not establish who ordered each disposal route.

Odelia gave both workers separate handsets, preventing the carrier office from controlling which statement reached Ione's evidence record.

The father accepted Paloma's price only after his insurer confirmed unpaid hazardous work voided the carrier's contamination coverage.

"Our family does not charge itself for help, and we expected the same principle from a guild built around service," the father said.

Paloma quoted twenty-four thousand credits for live recovery, contamination denial, evidence preservation, plus one missing-person search.

'Gratitude requested before the body is found... damn, price the work where they can hear it,' Ossian watched the father, 'do not discount fear.'

The family accepted after Paloma read each line aloud beneath the balcony, making every worker hear what unpaid disposal had cost.

Twenty-four thousand credits entered the guild account before Paloma took her 4,800 gross share, raising the balance from 131,000 to 150,200.

Vaska opened Orchid toward the incinerator and found living boundaries braided with dead sensory tissue behind its rear wall.

Maelle broke the false panel using her hammer, exposing a vertical nest built from clinic labels, hair, plus stripped face grafts.

Hollow Raven hung upside down above the missing son, its black body carrying pale patches shaped from other people's discarded skin.

Each patch turned toward a different doorway, preserving the final direction its original owner had travelled before disposal.

One eye reflected the perfume lift, another held unit 14, plus a third showed the auction service shaft behind broken glass.

'It carries our last ten chapters across its body... damn, killing it may erase routes we still need,' Ossian studied the chest, 'preserve the central memory.'

The creature opened six remembered mouths along its chest, speaking route calls from clinics, tunnels, plus the perfume lift.

'Faces collected as maps... hell, Solenne threw away senses and taught a scavenger where every owner travelled,' Ossian opened Jackal, 'protect the living boundary.'

The missing son remained conscious inside the nest, unable to tell whether the voices around him came from workers he knew.

Vaska sent a narrow biological denial cloud toward Hollow Raven, but it ignored scent and followed the remembered path of her earlier approach instead.

The creature reached the place she had occupied twenty seconds before, striking empty air while Vaska stood beside Odelia.

"It attacks positions stored through sensory grafts, while changing smell cannot alter a route already remembered," Vaska said.

Odelia activated the first speaker near the incinerator entrance, playing Vaska's footsteps toward a corridor nobody had walked.

Hollow Raven turned but did not pursue, recognising sound without the directional history attached to a real body.

'A false noise lacks a past... give it movement that creates one,' Ossian transferred Furnace under Ironback Left, 'heat the ground in sequence.'

Ten exposed seconds passed while Calista held her spear across the nest opening and Maelle marked supports around the trapped man.

Furnace warmed three floor plates one after another, creating a thermal route leading away from the living victim.

Odelia moved the recorded footsteps across matching speakers, joining sound with a changing physical trail beneath the Raven.

The creature followed both signals, committing to a route assembled in the present rather than recalled from harvested memory.

Ossian transferred Jackal Right without stacking it over Furnace, preserving the established separation between pursuit and heat.

'Two hands, two jobs, one false path... no need to invent a new stack for spectacle,' Ossian waited through transfer, 'make the cold wake visible.'

Jackal found weakness in the skin patches while Furnace revealed a cold line where the Raven's body left each warmed plate.

Grave Rush carried Ossian through four steps beside that line, reaching the creature after it turned toward a remembered doorway.

His first strike removed one stolen face without touching the living tissue anchoring its wing.

The Raven screamed through the missing son's voice, asking his father why work inside a family required no wage.

Above them, the balcony remained silent while Paloma's invoice screen kept the unpaid-shift records visible beneath it.

'Monster repeats the question nobody paid him to ask... shit, do not let truth protect its body,' Ossian closed on the cold wake, 'Calista, cut memory loose.'

Calista severed three graft cords through the nest wall, forcing Hollow Raven to lose routes connected to the perfume clinic.

Maelle lifted the missing son with one arm while her hammer held the collapsing graft frame above him.

Odelia shifted footsteps toward the open yard, giving the Raven one complete route away from every breathing person.

It followed, wings unfolding into remembered angles too large for the body carrying them.

Ossian caught the first wing with Ironback, stored its turning force, plus released the impact into an empty incinerator brace.

The brace rotated across the false route, pinning Hollow Raven without crushing its central chest.

Jackal exposed the weakest seam beneath its beak, allowing Ossian to strike once and end movement before another stolen face could speak.

The system revealed a narrow black mask inside the carcass, its surface reflecting doors absent from the yard.

[Hollow Raven acquired]

[Owned faces: 6]

[Initial synchronisation: 7%]

'Six faces, one built from routes people lost... keep it off until the victim stops hearing himself,' Ossian sealed the mask, 'rescue first.'

The missing son left the nest alive with dehydration, graft exposure, plus no permanent binding detected.

His father attempted to call the recovery a family matter until the son asked for Paloma's employment-law contact in front of workers.

Paloma provided it without reducing the rescue invoice or turning legal help into another debt.

The carrier's insurer received proof that Veil Court waste had entered ordinary medical disposal through falsified clinic labels.

That evidence forced immediate paid leave for every exposed worker, a public reversal delivered through payroll rather than cameras.

Odelia tested Hollow Raven after medical clearance, playing four moving routes while Ossian wore the mask for eight seconds.

Directional memory showed where each sound had travelled, but the instinct urged him to keep every route instead of choosing relevance.

'Secrets fill every route, hoarding becomes control... another appetite pretending collection is safety,' Ossian removed it, 'seven percent is enough tonight.'

Inside the final remembered path, a corridor extended from the perfume clinic toward a building absent from every current city map.

The route turned whenever no sound travelled through it, leaving only Hollow Raven's memory of where the walls used to stand.

One discarded voice inside the mask named the destination as Veil Court transfer housing and repeated tomorrow's date.
