Maskbound: The Ultimate Hunter

Chapter 50 Name the Living

  • Next Chapter

Six voices answered from the stalled carriage, although Odelia's register allowed only five living commuters behind its sealed doors.

Ossian stood outside with empty Dreadweight while Tavet kept every combat configuration under emergency suspension.

'One copied voice among five frightened people... choose wrong, a person becomes bait,' Ossian pressed the intercom, 'make them prove a life.'

Odelia wrote the first detail across her board: Neral had called while hiding an anniversary gift beneath his seat.

"Tell me what you bought without naming the person receiving it," Ossian said through the carriage speaker.

Four voices disappeared from the damaged circuit while two answered together, one saying glass earrings as another described a blue cooking pot.

Odelia crossed out both objects, then wrote that Neral had lied about buying anything after his partner checked the shared account.

'The real detail is embarrassment, not merchandise... hell, mimic stole the cleaner sentence,' Ossian asked, 'who caught the lie?'

One voice named the partner and repeated the argument badly, including a wrong date plus the insult Neral regretted.

The blue-pot voice repeated its polished answer until Ione cut power to the intercom.

Something kept speaking inside the dead carriage circuit, proving one response travelled through larval tissue rather than copper.

Ione slid a sampling strip beneath the door, finding human blood across five positions and clear shell fluid under the sixth voice.

"Five living sources remain inside, while the mimic occupies the ceiling above the rear seats," she said.

Tavet permitted door removal as rescue work but prohibited hunting beyond what the trapped civilians required.

'A legal distinction narrow enough to cut fingers... good, use it carefully,' Ossian gripped the emergency wheel, 'open only the front half.'

The mechanism had warped under platform heat, forcing him to brace the empty gauntlets against both handles.

Dreadweight stored nothing, yet its fused plating protected skin while Ossian turned the wheel through ordinary leverage.

The front door opened eighteen inches before a copied cry ordered the commuters toward the rear exit.

Neral refused that voice, crawled forward, plus brought four others through the gap one at a time.

The larva dropped after the fifth person cleared, unfolding a translucent throat shaped to reproduce every sound stored inside it.

Ossian caught its jaw between empty gauntlets, taking the impact through shoulders Tavet's lock had left entirely human.

'No Jackal wound, no Ironback storage... shit, protect first, kill only if protection demands it,' Ossian drove it against the door frame, 'Ione, contain.'

Ione closed a Directorate restraint around the throat while Tavet fixed Caliper across its folding limbs.

The creature remained alive for study, satisfying the rescue limit without granting Ossian an unregistered combat victory.

Five commuters joined the safe count, leaving six people missing beneath platforms three and four.

Odelia assigned one private detail to each rescue team while refusing to speak through the compromised public network.

The two transit guards answered Calista's pipe signal by dragging their injured passenger across a maintenance bridge.

Their copied voices called from the opposite tunnel, repeating official badge numbers without knowing which guard hated elevators.

Calista asked that question through the analogue handset, receiving one immediate curse plus three seconds of confused silence.

'A curse carrying more identity than any registry number... damn, useful language wins again,' Ossian marked the true bridge, 'three located.'

Vaska found the station cleaners inside the supply corridor after Carrion Orchid separated living boundaries from larval residue.

Both cleaners had blocked the lower vent with detergent drums, preventing clear shell fluid from reaching street drains.

They refused guild membership, rescue debt, plus public interviews before anyone offered any of those things.

Bastien recorded them as rescued civilians, not candidates, making the distinction visible on his count sheet.

Only the food seller remained missing when smoke reached floor level across platform four.

Odelia remembered the jammed coin dispenser, sending Ossian toward a kiosk buried behind fallen route boards.

Four voices complained about the fourth press before he touched the debris, each repeating identical words through different speakers.

Ossian struck the dispenser with one empty gauntlet, making real coins rattle beneath the counter while three false complaints continued without reacting.

"You dented my machine, and that damage comes out of your rescue fee," a woman shouted from behind the kiosk.

'Anger attached to damaged property... alive, practical, already billing us,' Ossian lifted the board, 'Paloma may recruit her by accident.'

The seller crawled free carrying her injured assistant, whom the station register had misclassified as evacuated.

That correction raised the missing count by one before reducing it again, ending with all twelve newly located people alive.

Ione compared the final names with blood positions, route calls, plus analogue-handset records before closing the missing-person register.

Every living person had answered through memory unavailable to the larvae, while copied voices had relied on official identifiers.

Odelia wrote that distinction across the incident form despite medical staff ordering her hands to remain still.

"Names identify records, but details identify people, so use both whenever a voice can be stolen," she wrote.

'A rescue rule built from knowing lives beyond files... Tavet cannot call that supernatural,' Ossian read it twice, 'make the station adopt it.'

Tavet submitted her method as emergency identification procedure under Odelia's name rather than folding it into his evaluation report.

The transit authority objected until Paloma attached recordings showing its badge-number protocol repeatedly following larval instructions.

Bastien added the corrected assistant count, proving official certainty had missed one living worker before any monster copied anyone.

Calista required every future evacuation team to carry one personal-detail card per reported survivor alongside ordinary route numbers.

Vaska warned that biological mimicry might eventually reproduce memory responses, keeping the new procedure useful without pretending it permanent.

Maelle priced analogue handsets for the depot, finding six refurbished units cheaper than one licensed emergency-network subscription.

The guild approved the purchase through its existing equipment allocation rather than taking money from protected-patient care.

Seventy-five civilians had now cleared the station, plus one restrained larva remained under Directorate control.

Paloma paid seven thousand credits in medical transport, transit bonds, respiratory treatment, plus emergency structural access.

The account reached 139,000, completing the financial fall from 161,600 after Ruan's rescue payment.

Tavet filed Ossian's empty-gauntlet work as registered rescue competence rather than an exception granted by public sympathy.

The Directorate raised his Influence classification to District after three independent teams followed his shared route structure.

[Human-form rescue pattern has gained District influence]

[Four owned faces remain in storage]

[Fracture: 48%]

That number arrived after Ossian imagined the restrained larva's six voices as useful compartments rather than stolen people.

'Forty-eight for wanting its throat organised... no mask active, still the appetite found me,' Ossian stepped away, 'record the thought.'

Calista wrote it beside the false memory from Chapter 47, refusing to let either symptom become private shame.

Odelia accepted treatment on the freight ramp while station officials asked who had authorised her evacuation commands.

Tavet answered that usefulness had preceded authority, forcing the officials to document sixty-three people saved before their arrival.

Vaska's transformation remained an independent permanent awakening, Maelle's hammer another, plus Calista's Mantis the first.

Nobody counted the twelve perfume-clinic patients as guild members, leaving five filed names despite twenty-four protected lives across two scenes.

'Five filed names, twelve patients, 75 station survivors... numbers stay honest when categories remain separate,' Ossian closed the ledger, 'keep them distinct.'

A deep vibration lifted dust from every platform edge before the station could reopen an exit.

The restrained larva flattened itself against the floor, surrendering all six stolen voices to one larger call below.

Odelia's bandaged throat moved without sound as the rails produced her exact final note from the previous chapter.

Platform three split along its yellow line, exposing a wing wider than the stalled carriage beneath it.

An adult Cathedral Cicada tore through concrete and repeated Odelia's voice, ordering every rescued civilian back downstairs.
