Maskbound: The Ultimate Hunter
Chapter 35 No Room for Charity
The man outside the shutter had been standing in rain long enough for the folder under his coat to bend at both corners.
Ossian recognised the name from Paloma's rejection ledger: Tallis, Loadbearer, twenty-eight, four years registered without one combat classification.
'A porter with a better title... old shoulders, familiar debt hiding under the coat,' Ossian lifted the shutter far enough for him, 'get him dry first.'
Tallis entered without thanking anybody, put the Veil Court advertisement on the office table before placing a hospital statement beside it.
Nineteen thousand credits remained on that statement after two years of payments, with interest owning more of each month than medicine did.
"I can work it off," Tallis kept both hands flat beside the debt, "You choose the term, I sign before the binding."
'He brought service for life to a room that refused him by letter... shit, somebody taught him this was a price,' Ossian looked at Paloma, 'stop the contract first.'
Paloma turned the statement around, found the purchased-debt stamp near the bottom before drawing two columns on an unused invoice.
"We are refusing two different transactions," she kept her pen on the paper, "Money occupies this column, while your body occupies the other."
The financial refusal came first, with four hundred a month for aftercare plus liability cover no insurer had offered The Unmasked.
One failed permanent binding could take the guild's twenty thousand seven hundred credits, the depot lease, plus every future payment before lunch.
'Twenty thousand sounds rich until one damaged arm walks through the door... lovely, the account learned fear before I did,' Ossian watched Tallis read.
The second refusal could not use money, since a poor man hears price even where nobody means to set one.
Ossian placed Dreadweight on the table, opened the compatibility function before asking whether Tallis wanted witnesses present.
Tallis chose Calista plus Maelle, refusing Paloma on the ground that a lawyer already had enough authority inside the room.
Calista stood beside the loading-bay rail with her spear cased, while Maelle brought a meter nobody needed but everybody trusted.
[The applicant has requested inspection]
[A creature asking for teeth may still be the wrong shape to carry them]
'It calls him a creature before it has touched him... damn it, keep the wording off your face,' Ossian selected Carrion Jackal, 'show me the damage.'
Jackal compatibility drew force down Tallis's legs, turning every pursuit line red at both knees before the fourth step arrived.
Ironback lasted longer, building a dark path across his shoulders until the stored load reached the old compression in his spine.
The path ended there in a colour Ossian had only seen on two failed cases from the public registry.
Furnace Salamander refused to enter the chest at all, leaving a blank human outline with heat gathering outside the ribs.
'Each face finds a different way to ruin him... no fourth answer waits in a drawer,' Ossian closed every result, 'tell him plain, no system language.'
"Jackal takes your knees, Ironback takes your spine, Furnace never reaches your core," Ossian kept his hands open, "Every answer ends with no."
Tallis stared at the three copied diagrams rather than at Ossian, as though enough attention might force one line into a different colour.
"How many masks do you have?" Tallis folded the hospital statement once, making the purchased-debt stamp disappear inside it.
'Current count is four, with one transferred plus one gone... sounds like stock behind a counter either way,' Ossian met his eyes, 'give him the number.'
"Four remain mine," Ossian put the answer where every witness could hear it, "One is my own face, and none fit you."
The advertisement promised guaranteed compatibility in smaller print beneath an address written by hand rather than printed with the offer.
Tallis tapped that guarantee with one finger, leaving a wet mark over the word permanent.
"They have one that fits," he looked toward Maelle's hammer, "You gave a mask to her weapon before giving one to somebody who asked."
Maelle set the meter down without looking away from the diagram showing Tallis's spine.
"I refused a bodily mask," she kept both hands on the case, "That hammer carries my choice, not his charity."
'He sees a working arm, a living hammer, four faces in my hands... hell, from his side I am hoarding doors,' Ossian touched the red spine line, 'do not defend the pile.'
Calista came off the rail before Ossian found a useful answer, stopping near Tallis rather than returning to the guild table.
"He is refusing to build a weapon that breaks your spine," she kept her voice level, "You may hate him without making that result false."
Tallis pushed the diagrams back, leaving Jackal on top with both ruined knees bright against the page.
"A refusal with reasons still leaves me outside," he put the advertisement into his coat, "They offered a door I can use tonight."
Paloma slid a public clinic list across before he stood, each entry carrying a waiting time plus its debt-assistance policy.
No clinic on that page offered a second awakening, which made the list accurate without making it useful.
'Give him something that changes the next hour... not another paper explaining why his life costs too much,' Ossian looked at the handwritten address, 'ask for one promise.'
"Ask what happens to the people their mask refuses," Ossian held the door open, "Watch who answers before you sign anything."
Tallis took the clinic list, left all three compatibility diagrams on the table, then walked east under the freight-line lamps.
Bastien watched him reach the corner, wrote the time beside the direction, then returned the pencil to his coat.
Calista pulled the eastern freight map from the route cabinet, laying Tallis's direction across three warehouses reclassified eight months earlier.
'A dead building paying for forty rooms... somebody wants the lights without the address,' Ossian marked unit fourteen, 'that is where the paper came from.'
Paloma traced the owner to a final registration at a post box removed six years ago.
The power account used a clinic exemption, meaning somebody had declared medical equipment without registering one patient or licensed practitioner.
"That buys them backup supply during outages," Paloma turned her screen toward the room, "It also gives a magistrate something worth reading tomorrow."
'Tomorrow leaves Tallis one whole night inside... damn it, a legal clock always belongs to the room with the lock,' Ossian studied the freight line, 'watch first.'
Bastien circled the delivery entrance, the meter cabinet, plus a gantry overlooking both doors without trespassing there.
"I can take a cart through at seven," he folded the map along the street, "Empty units still receive cleaning compound every morning."
Calista assigned herself the gantry before Ossian could offer, making the surveillance plan an operation rather than a rescue attempt.
"You followed men for less when we worked nights," Bastien gave Ossian the delivery note, "Do not pretend this needs a meeting."
'He is right... and Calista will stop me if I turn following into ownership,' Ossian read the time, 'say exactly what I want.'
"I want the address," Ossian put the note beside Paloma's two columns, "I do not want Tallis dragged out of it."
Paloma opened the ledger, moved six hundred credits into surveillance, then made Ossian initial the new balance of twenty thousand one hundred.
[Your territory has refused hungry stock]
[Another court has offered to eat what you would not carry]
'Hungry stock... the system found the cruelest correct description in the room,' Ossian picked up the abandoned diagrams, 'find the door before it closes.'
Maelle held the advertisement under her work lamp, scraped one corner of its black seal, then caught the dust in a glass dish.
Powdered Gate fragment filled the seal, enough material to waste on printing when the licensed trade measured every shaving.
"The address and the stock room share a press," Maelle pushed the dish toward Paloma, "Whoever printed this handles counterfeit material by the crate."
Outside, Tallis crossed beneath the eastern warehouse sign without once looking back toward the depot.
