Maskbound: The Ultimate Hunter
Chapter 102 The Road to the Deep Well
The morning mist clung to the pine-covered ridges of northern Suzuhara as Ren walked toward the courier guild depot. The bustling yard hummed with frantic activity, where independent merchants gathered in anxious clusters to debate the sudden corporate transport blockade.
Koharu stood atop a sturdy packing crate near the stable gates, her sharp gaze surveying the chaotic gathering of frustrated drivers.
"Director Arata can lock his paved highways all he likes, but he cannot stop the wind from blowing over the mountains!" Koharu announced to the anxious crowd in a clear, ringing voice that commanded instant attention. "The frontier couriers know every hidden trail through these valleys, and we will keep the medicine wagons moving regardless of corporate tariffs!"
Her brother Haruto leaned against the office railing, reviewing a stack of route manifests while offering supportive nods to the assembled wagon masters.
Ren stepped through the stable gates, nodding to Haruto before joining Koharu beside the central freight platform. The young courier jumped down from the crate with a lively bounce, her twin daggers shifting smoothly against her leather belt as she greeted him with a bright smile.
"I knew you would come looking for an alternative route, Ren..." Koharu said with a mischievous grin, tapping the rolled dispatch map tucked under her arm. "My scouts have already mapped the ancient logging trails that bypass the corporate toll stations entirely!"
Ren smiled as she unrolled the detailed map across a flat grain bin, revealing an intricate network of forgotten mountain paths.
The primary route traced a steep ascending gorge that climbed toward the Deep Well waystation, an ancient fortified outpost built during the original frontier expansion. The fortress had thick stone palisades and deep natural cisterns, offering an ideal staging depot for long-distance courier convoys traveling between the provinces.
"The only problem is that the deep gorges have become heavily infested with territorial crag stalkers..." Haruto explained, pointing to several hazard markings along the high mountain pass. "Those predatory beasts hunt in coordinated packs, making the upper trail completely impassable for ordinary commercial carriages!"
Ren studied the terrain markings with analytical focus, recognizing that establishing a secure trade route required clearing the monster nests permanently.
"If our hunting team clears the mountain pass and secures the waystation, how many wagons can your couriers mobilize?" Ren asked, looking directly into Koharu's determined eyes. "We need a dependable schedule that guarantees regular medicine deliveries to every independent clinic in the valley!"
"With three reinforced cargo wagons and six experienced mountain drivers, we can maintain two weekly runs between the settlements..." Koharu answered with supreme confidence. "All we need is initial working capital to purchase cold-weather harnesses, wheel chains, and emergency repair supplies for the convoy!"
Ren reached into his satchel and withdrew fifty silver coins, placing the coin pouch directly into Koharu's outstretched palm.
The investment represented a minority stake in the newly formed independent courier venture, cementing a vital partnership that would break the corporate monopoly. After subtracting the fifty silver coins for the transport supplies, his personal cash balance rested at exactly four hundred and fifty silver coins.
"Consider the expedition fully funded..." Ren said with a firm nod, closing his satchel securely against his belt. "Gather your best team of drivers, and we will march out toward the Deep Well outpost immediately!"
Koharu beamed with unbridled excitement, tucking the coin pouch into her tunic before shouting quick instructions to the waiting yard hands.
Two hours later, a reinforced caravan consisting of three covered wagons and a dedicated vanguard of seasoned hunters departed from the northern gates of Suzuhara. Reiji took the lead on point with his twin hatchets loosened in their holsters, while Akane rode atop the primary supply wagon with her magnetic launch rig prepared for action.
The mountain trail climbed steeply into the jagged cliffs, where ancient hemlock trees created a dense canopy that blocked out the midday sun.
Ren walked alongside Koharu near the lead wagon, keeping his senses alert as the sound of distant rockslides echoed across the narrow ravine. The steep road wound along sheer granite cliffs, forcing the heavy freight wagons to navigate narrow turns where a single loose boulder could send a carriage plunging into the abyss.
Akane watched the iron-banded wagon wheels closely, occasionally signaling the drivers to halt while she inspected the stability of the bridges spanning the ravines.
"These old foundation timbers are remarkably solid despite decades of neglect..." Akane reported after tapping a support beam with her wrench. "With a few magnetic reinforcing pins along the central joints, this crossing will easily support our heaviest freight loads without risk of collapse!"
Her practical engineering assessments gave the drivers immense confidence, allowing the caravan to maintain a steady climbing pace up the treacherous mountain incline.
As they rounded a sharp hairpin turn overlooking a thousand-foot drop, a harsh screeching cry shattered the quiet mountain air from the cliffs above.
Four massive Crag Stalkers lunged from the overhanging rock ledges, their armored carapaces glistening with razor-sharp mineral ridges as they descended upon the convoy. The agile predators landed with terrifying speed, their segmented claws digging deep gouges into the gravel road as they lunged toward the lead draft horses.

Ren tapped his temple, channeling the swift azure essence of the Storm Wolf mask as his body accelerated into a blinding forward dash.
He intercepted the lead stalker mid-leap, his hooked sword whistling through the air to sever the creature's grasping front claw in a spray of pale ichor. The beast shrieked in sudden agony, crashing into the gravel embankment while Ren pivoted smoothly on his heel to confront the remaining predators.
"Keep the wagon teams in tight formation!" Ren commanded over the screeching cries of the beasts, his blade humming with azure electrical currents. "Reiji, take the flank while I hold the high ledge!"
Reiji leaped from the trail with a ferocious war cry, his twin hunting hatchets striking the second stalker with crushing physical force.
"You picked the wrong convoy to ambush, overgrown lizards!" Reiji roared with savage delight, burying his hatchet deep into the monster's carapace. "These wagons are carrying medicine for honest frontier folks, and nothing is getting past my guard today!"
Akane fired a rapid volley of magnetized suppression pins from her crossbow rig, pinning the third stalker's legs securely against the bedrock.
Ren bounded up the cliff face with enhanced agile momentum, driving the tip of his hooked sword straight through the skull of the final descending beast. The creature went completely limp, tumbling down the rocky scree to lie motionless beside the road as the remaining wounded predator fled into the dense timberline.
The skirmish ended as quickly as it began, leaving the mountain path clear and the convoy entirely unharmed.
Koharu let out a long whistle of genuine admiration, trotting up to the fallen monsters with her surveying notebook in hand. She recorded the exact location of the ambush, marking the cleared perimeter on her tactical transit map with precise ink strokes.
"That was magnificent teamwork, hunters!" Koharu cheered, giving Ren an enthusiastic pat on the shoulder as he sheathed his humming blade. "With protection like this, our courier wagons will cross these mountains faster than any company freight line!"
The caravan resumed its ascent without further delay, crossing the high mountain ridge just as the late afternoon sun bathed the peaks in brilliant orange light.
Ahead on the plateau, the towering stone fortifications of the Deep Well waystation loomed against the mountain backdrop, its watchtowers standing intact above the surrounding pine forest. The outer courtyard was overgrown with mountain briars, but the fortified gates and defensive trenches remained structurally sound and ready for immediate occupation.
Reiji strode over to the central courtyard fountain, testing the manual lever to draw a stream of pure mountain spring water into the basin.
"The natural spring aquifer is completely clean and flowing at full capacity!" Reiji announced with a hearty laugh, splashing the cold water over his soot-streaked face. "We have unlimited fresh drinking water for dozens of draft animals and ample space inside the stables to shelter three full wagon trains!"
Akane began deploying a ring of magnetic perimeter sensors along the outer palisade walls, ensuring that no nocturnal predators could approach the outpost undetected.
"I am locking down the eastern parapets with tripwires linked directly to alarm bells in the guardhouse..." Akane explained as she calibrated the sensitive tension springs. "If any roaming beast pack crosses within thirty paces of the outer perimeter, the alarm will alert our watchmen instantly!"
The drivers began unhitching the draft teams and leading them toward the sheltered stalls, their cheerful laughter echoing across the recovered stronghold.
Ren checked the perimeter sentry posts with Koharu, confirming that the entire plateau was secure before the crimson sunset faded behind the western ridges. Establishing this forward base provided the northern frontier with a vital lifeline that no corporate embargo could easily disrupt.
Ren looked up the winding road toward the high plateau, feeling the cool mountain breeze carry the fresh scent of evergreen needles across the threshold.
The first major obstacle on their northern journey was overcome, but securing the fortress outpost would require clearing the deeper hollows beneath the mountain. With four hundred and fifty silver coins in reserve and his companions fighting in perfect harmony, Ren led the caravan forward toward their new mountain stronghold.
The road to the Deep Well was open, and the future of the frontier grew brighter with every step they took into the wilderness.
