Chapter 80: Chapter 80: Carol’s Situation (bonus)

Several thousand light-years away from Earth.

On Hala, the capital planet of the Kree Empire.

Carol, with her blonde hair spread across her pillow, was dreaming again. It was another chaotic dream.

Fragments of memories and scenes that made no sense. And as always, she woke up with a headache. Of course, these days she wasn’t called Carol anymore.

She was known as Vers.

Unable to fall back asleep, Carol got out of bed and opened the window. Outside, several spacecraft flew through the sky.

The entire city radiated advanced technology. Towering structures stretched towards the sky, glowing with the distinctive brilliance of Kree civilization.

After staring outside for a while, she left her room and knocked on Yon-Rogg’s door. The door slid open.

Yon-Rogg looked at her helplessly.

"Do you know what time it is?"

"I can’t sleep," Carol replied.

"Then take a sleeping pill."

"If I do that, I’ll be tired tomorrow."

Yon-Rogg sighed.

"You had the dreams again."

Carol pouted.

"Maybe."

It wasn’t unusual anymore. She often dreamed about strange things.

Sometimes she would see herself lying on a sandy wasteland. In front of her stood a woman she didn’t recognize, then a Skrull would appear and kill the woman right before her eyes.

Those dreams were disturbing, but there was another dream she had far more often.

A man.

He had a bright, warm presence, especially when he smiled. For some reason, Carol dreamed about him again and again. In those dreams, he would take her flying through the sky.

Not in a spacecraft, not with any equipment... but just flying.

The strange thing was that every time she saw him, she felt an overwhelming sense of familiarity.

As if he were someone incredibly important. Someone she should know, but whenever she tried to remember who he was, a splitting headache would tear through her mind.

Eventually, Carol shook away those thoughts, since she couldn’t sleep anyway, she looked at Yon-Rogg.

"Want to fight?"

He blinked.

"What?"

"A sparring match."

Carol cracked her knuckles.

"I’m awake now anyway, so might as well get some exercise."

"No."

Yon-Rogg refused immediately. He still couldn’t understand what was wrong with this Earth woman. By all logic, a Kree warrior should possess superior physical abilities compared to humans.

And Yon-Rogg wasn’t an ordinary Kree. He was one of the best, sure, he couldn’t compare to monsters like Ronan.

That guy was practically a mutant among the Kree. But against a normal human? He should have won effortlessly.

Except, he couldn’t beat Carol.

"Come on." Carol grinned.

"I promise I won’t use my physical advantages against you."

Yon-Rogg narrowed his eyes.

"Really?"

"Really."

He immediately changed clothes.

"Training room. Right now."

Today was revenge day. The two entered a combat chamber, and as promised, Carol deliberately restrained her physical strength. Because of that, she fought awkwardly, her movements lacked confidence, she was constantly holding herself back.

Smack!

A fist slammed into her face. Carol fell to the floor, and Yon-Rogg stood over her with a smug expression.

"Your combat skills are still as terrible as ever, not a bit of improvement."

Carol sat up and glared at him.

"Again."

She jumped to her feet and charged forward. The two exchanged blows, gradually, Carol unconsciously started increasing her strength.

Immediately, Yon-Rogg felt the pressure. He kicked her backward and quickly stepped away.

"Wasn’t the agreement that you wouldn’t use your physical abilities to beat me?"

Carol blinked.

"Oh."

"Sorry."

"I didn’t notice."

"Control your power," Yon-Rogg pointed at her.

"You need restraint."

"You need discipline."

"Hmm... fine."

Carol rolled her shoulders, "Let’s continue."

The sparring resumed. This time Carol carefully suppressed her strength, a few moments later... she was on the floor again.

"The ground’s slippery," she complained.

Yon-Rogg laughed, "The ground isn’t slippery."

"You slipped because I punched you."

He looked extremely pleased with himself, but Carol immediately got back up.

"Again."

She refused to admit defeat. The next exchange went even worse. Yon-Rogg had spent his entire life fighting, his combat experience vastly exceeded hers and he had mastered countless fighting styles.

Soon, Carol found herself being pushed back again, seeing another defeat approaching, she panicked.

But just as Yon-Rogg’s fist was about to hit her face, golden light erupted from her left hand.

Boom!

The energy blast launched Yon-Rogg across the room.

"Ugh!"

He flew five or six meters before crashing onto the floor. Everything in his body hurt like hell and Yon-Rogg groaned as he struggled back to his feet.

"I thought you said you weren’t going to use your physical advantages."

Carol looked completely innocent.

"I didn’t."

"I wasn’t overpowering you with strength."

"I used superpowers."

Yon-Rogg stared at her for several seconds, then he pinched the bridge of his nose.

"Control your power, Vers."

His tone became serious.

"How many times have I told you this? You need to learn control."

"Don’t let your emotions dictate your actions, because that only makes you weak."

Secretly, Yon-Rogg regretted coming here wearing only a training tank top. If he had brought proper equipment, he was convinced he could have taught her a lesson. At the very least, they could have fought evenly.

Probably... Maybe... Hopefully.

Carol folded her arms.

"Really?"

"I don’t feel weak."

She pointed at him.

"Especially since you can’t beat me."

Yon-Rogg almost choked, then he took a deep breath.

"You are a warrior."

"But you’re also a soldier."

"What matters isn’t individual strength."

"It’s teamwork and coordination."

"You can defeat one enemy."

"Ten enemies."

"Even a hundred enemies."

"But can you defeat an entire fleet by yourself?"

Carol opened her mouth but didn’t answer, but Yon-Rogg continued.

"Interstellar warfare relies on cooperation, not on personal heroics."

"You’ve abandoned your squad and charged into enemy territory by yourself more times than I can count. And if you keep doing it..."

His expression darkened.

"The Supreme Intelligence is going to want a conversation with you."

Carol looked completely unconcerned. "I don’t think I’ve done anything wrong." She casually shrugged.

"Every mission I’ve participated in has been successful. I eliminate enemies quickly."

"One strike. One kill."

"Yes."

Yon-Rogg nodded, "You’ve succeeded."

"So far."

Then his voice became much colder. "But can you guarantee you’ll succeed every time?"

"What happens when you fail?"

"What happens when you’re finally wrong?"

"The moment you make a mistake; you’ll expose the entire team."

"You’ll get everyone killed."

Yon-Rogg genuinely had a headache when it came to Carol. This woman relied entirely on her overwhelming strength. Every mission became an adventure; every operation became a heart attack for the rest of the squad.

Without warning, she’d charge straight into enemy territory. The rest of them would spend the entire mission terrified she was about to get herself killed.

Finally, Yon-Rogg sighed, "It seems you really need to see the Supreme Intelligence."

Clearly, she hadn’t listened to a single word he’d said. The Supreme Intelligence would have to educate her instead. As a native-born citizen of the Kree Empire, Yon-Rogg firmly believed one thing. There was no problem the Supreme Intelligence couldn’t solve.

Hearing that Carol just rolled her eyes.

"Fine, I’ll go."

That afternoon, the two rode one of Hala’s common transportation vehicles, a sleek civilian flyer that glided through the air.

During the journey, Carol suddenly asked, "When you met the Supreme Intelligence, what form did it take?"

The Supreme Intelligence was a collective consciousness created from the minds of the greatest Kree. Whenever someone met it, it appeared as the person they cared about most. Yon-Rogg didn’t answer immediately, instead, Carol started guessing.

"Your father?"

"No."

"Your mother?"

"No."

Carol smiled mischievously.

"It appeared as me, didn’t it?"

Yon-Rogg nearly choked.

"No, now just stop guessing."

And just like that, he ended the conversation.

The Supreme Intelligence had assigned Yon-Rogg to train Carol and help her master her abilities. Unfortunately, there was one small problem, he couldn’t actually beat her, and it was rather humiliating.

Still, despite that, Carol genuinely liked Yon-Rogg. According to what she’d been told, when she had been gravely injured years ago, Yon-Rogg had given her a blood transfusion.

Kree blood now flowed through her veins. On top of that, she had no memories, no past, no identity, and no idea who she used to be.

During that uncertain period, Yon-Rogg had always been there. Training her, teaching her combat skills, helping her join Starforce. Encouraging her whenever she doubted herself and constantly motivating her. Without realizing it, Carol had developed feelings of gratitude for him.

Most importantly, he had helped her find confidence when she had none. For someone lost between an unknown past and an uncertain future, that support had meant everything.

The vehicle gradually descended.

"We’re here," Yon-Rogg said.

The flyer landed smoothly. He stood up.

"You’ll have to go in by yourself."

Carol nodded, and without saying another word, she stepped out of the vehicle. Ahead of her stood a magnificent structure, a grand hall of towering scale and breathtaking architecture, the seat of the Supreme Intelligence.

Taking a deep breath, Carol walked inside alone.
