Chapter 78: Chapter 78: Love Confession

That night, Daniel finally got a good night’s sleep. The next morning, when he met up with Susan, she immediately noticed the difference.

"You look a lot better today!"

Daniel blinked, "Do I?"

Susan nodded, "Yeah, definitely."

"Then I guess I just slept really well last night," Daniel said with a grin.

And he wasn’t wrong. The moment he got back from Kamar-Taj, he’d practically collapsed into bed and slept like a log, and when he’d woken up that morning, he’d even sighed emotionally.

"Being young and strong is great."

In his previous life, he had been weak as hell and this was a completely different experience.

"You’re leaving college in the next couple of days, aren’t you?" Susan asked.

"Yeah, "Daniel nodded. "My thesis defense is tomorrow, and once that’s over, I’m basically done. I’ll probably leave the day after."

Under normal circumstances, he shouldn’t have graduated until the following summer. But Daniel’s academic record was exceptional. Aside from occasionally skipping morning classes, every grade he received was an A+.

Combined with a very understanding advisor, the college had approved his early graduation.

"Are you ready for your defense?" Susan asked.

"Yes, everything’s prepared," Daniel smiled confidently. "I’m just waiting for tomorrow, and once it’s over, I’m free."

"You seem awfully eager to leave."

There was a trace of displeasure in Susan’s voice, unfortunately, Daniel didn’t notice.

"Not really eager." He shrugged. "It’s just that once I’m not a student anymore, I’ll have a lot more freedom."

Susan’s expression darkened.

"You’re not free now?"

Her tone became noticeably sharper.

"You spend every day doing whatever you want and acting like you don’t have a care in the world."

Daniel looked at her in confusion.

"What’s wrong with you today?"

"Why do you sound so angry?"

Then he thoughtfully added, "Wait... is it that time of the month?"

"That can’t be right."

"The timing’s off."

After several years together, Daniel was actually quite familiar with Susan’s cycle and it definitely wasn’t supposed to be around now.

Susan froze, then her face turned red with fury.

"Your period is here!"

She spun around and stormed off. Daniel stood there, bewildered.

"What the hell was that about?"

Women really did change moods faster than the weather. Over the next two days, Daniel focused entirely on his thesis defense.

The process went smoothly. His professor practically waved him through, and by the end of it, the professor had even invited him to join his research laboratory. Daniel rejected the offer without hesitation.

What a joke.

Using his brain? It’s impossible, just not happening. In this life, Daniel had no intention of doing any more serious thinking. People could just assume he didn’t have a brain.

After all, the author clearly didn’t either, otherwise he wouldn’t have written Daniel this way.

That evening, with Tony already gone, only three people remained on the rooftop: Daniel, Susan and T’Challa.

The familiar rooftop where they had spent countless nights talking together.

"So, you’re really leaving tomorrow?" T’Challa asked.

"Yeah, "Daniel leaned against the railing. "There’s nothing left for me to do at college."

"Hmph."

An unhappy sound immediately came from beside him.

T’Challa sighed.

"When you leave, it’ll just be me and Susan." He looked around the rooftop. "And I doubt anyone will come up here anymore."

There was genuine regret in his voice. For the first time, he felt like he was being abandoned. Everyone was leaving, now who was he supposed to hang out with now? Especially Tony, without him around, there’d be one less person to hit nightclubs with.

"Nobody’s going out and causing trouble with me anymore."

T’Challa looked genuinely heartbroken.

Daniel just rolled his eyes.

"You’re still thinking about that?"

"If you keep fooling around, you’re not even going to graduate."

He puffed out his chest proudly.

"Take advantage of us leaving and actually study."

"Maybe earn a doctorate."

"Look around you, who here doesn’t have a PhD?"

The doctorate he had just received earlier that day had inflated his ego considerably. Daniel felt incredibly proud, as now he was officially an intellectual, a highly educated member of society.

He had already decided to carry his doctoral certificate around with him. The next time someone called him a brute, he’d slap the certificate directly in their face.

Engineering doctorate.

Physics doctorate.

Take that.

As he fantasized about future arguments, another thought suddenly occurred to him.

’I should get a pair of fake glasses. People always look smarter with glasses.’

T’Challa immediately caught the smugness in Daniel’s tone and his face darkened.

"Who says I won’t graduate? It’s just that I haven’t been trying." He crossed his arms. "And once I start taking things seriously, I’ll get three doctorates."

Daniel laughed hearing that. "I look forward to seeing that."

The two continued chatting. One topic after another, as neither seemed capable of stopping.

Meanwhile, Susan sat nearby. Growing more irritated by the second, she repeatedly cleared her throat loudly and she kept staring directly at T’Challa.

Eventually, T’Challa got the message and as a man of culture, he immediately stood up.

"I just remembered I have something to do."

Without another word, he vanished. Leaving the rooftop entirely to Daniel and Susan.

The atmosphere suddenly became much quieter, after a moment, Susan asked, "Do you really have to leave so soon?"

Daniel nodded, "Yeah."

"Isn’t there anything at college you’ll miss?"

"Nope." Daniel answered immediately. "I’ve been here for almost three years, so I’ve already experienced everything there is to experience."

He stretched lazily. "Now, it’s time to get out and see the world."

Susan narrowed her eyes.

"See the world? What exactly are you planning to do?"

Daniel grinned, his expression brightening with quiet confidence.

"Travel around more and maybe have some fun."

The smile disappeared from Susan’s face. "What kind of fun?"

Daniel answered honestly.

"You know."

"Like Tony does. Travel everywhere, meet new people and leave a trail of romance behind."

Susan nearly exploded, and all it had taken was a single sentence. Yet somehow Daniel remained completely unaware.

"You know..." Daniel rubbed his chin thoughtfully. "Now that you mention it, I can actually start dating."

Susan stared at him as Daniel continued talking to himself.

"My control over my powers is pretty good now. So, normal things like holding hands, hugging, kissing, those shouldn’t be a problem anymore."

He paused, then added even more seriously, "As for going further, if I stay still, it should probably be safe."

Susan’s eye twitched, but Daniel remained completely oblivious.

"Actually, meeting beautiful women all around the world sounds pretty great."

"You!"

Susan felt like her teeth were grinding themselves apart. Was this guy a complete idiot? Or had she not been obvious enough over the years?

Even Tony and T’Challa had noticed. The two of them had practically been creating opportunities for her and Daniel whenever possible.

And yet this idiot hadn’t noticed a thing.

How many times had she asked him to pretend to be her boyfriend? How many times had they shared a room? And every single time... nothing happened.

She had walked around wearing a bathrobe right in front of him and what was he doing? Watching VHS tapes, watching movies.... watching literally anything except her.

The more Susan thought about it, the angrier she became. She was reaching critical mass, and at this point she was ready to explode. Still, she took a deep breath, then another.

Tonight she had already made up her mind, she was going to confess.

Enough was enough. She had spent years hanging herself from this one tree, so before she lost her courage, she opened her mouth, only for Daniel to suddenly interrupt.

"What do you think about me visiting northern Europe first?"

Susan blinked, as Daniel continued excitedly.

"I heard the girls there are really beautiful."

Susan’s forehead instantly filled with veins. At that moment, she genuinely wanted to kill someone. No... she wanted to kill Daniel and do it immediately.

She couldn’t hold it in anymore, and she finally snapped.

"You idiot!"

"I like you!"

She practically screamed the words.

"Now answer me!"

"Do you have feelings for me or not?!"

The rooftop fell silent.

The moment the words left her mouth, Susan felt an overwhelming sense of relief. Like a massive weight had finally been lifted off her shoulders.

Meanwhile, Daniel froze, and his brain stopped functioning. Several seconds passed before he finally managed to speak.

"You... like me?"

Susan rolled her eyes.

"Yeah, no kidding."

Then she crossed her arms.

"Just answer the question."

"If you don’t like me, then we’ll stay friends and I’ll go find some decent guy to date."

"I’ve been wasting years hanging around you. If this keeps up, I’ll turn into an old woman."

"No!"

The answer came instantly. Without even thinking, Daniel rejected the idea on pure instinct.

Susan’s eyes immediately lit up, and a smile began spreading across her face.

"So, you do like me."

She looked at him triumphantly.

"You’re just too stupid to realize it."

Daniel fell silent, for the first time, he seriously asked himself a question.

’Do I like Susan?’

He didn’t know, but memories began surfacing one after another. The first time they met in New York, the surprise of running into her again at MIT, the moment he thought she was beautiful.

The countless days they’d spent together, the countless conversations, the countless ordinary moments.

Somewhere along the way, Susan’s presence had become completely natural, she was always there, so, naturally, he stopped noticing it.

But... had he really only seen her as a friend? Would someone dream about doing those kinds of things with a friend?

The answer slowly emerged, and another question appeared.

’If Susan ended up with another man...’

’Would I be ok with it?’

This time, the answer came immediately.

No... absolutely not.

Daniel finally understood and looked up.

Susan appeared calm on the surface, but her slightly trembling eyelashes betrayed her nervousness. She was terrified of hearing his answer.

Looking directly into her eyes, Daniel smiled.

"I do."

Susan blinked.

"What?"

"I like you."

This time, Daniel said it clearly. Then he raised his voice.

"Will you be my girlfriend?"

For a moment, Susan simply stared at him, then she nodded, still trying very hard to remain composed.

"At least now you’re acting like a man." Her voice was calm, but a second later, she lowered her head and quietly added.

"I accept."
