Chapter 68: Chapter 68: Dollar Addiction

The next morning, Daniel got up unusually early. He swore that if money hadn’t been calling his name, there was absolutely no way he would’ve gotten out of bed.

The power of money was truly incredible. It had accomplished something no professor at MIT ever could. The college’s most notorious class skipper, Daniel Danvers, was awake at seven in the morning, it was a huge miracle.

Today, everything looked wonderful to Daniel. He even ran into Susan at breakfast and complimented her appearance, which left her happy for half the day.

’After today, I’ll finally be rich!’

The thought alone put him in an excellent mood. After carefully fixing his hair and putting on his suit, Daniel admired himself one last time.

The suit resembled Superman’s suit from movies, except without the underwear on the outside fashion disaster, in fact none of his suits had underwear. Standing in front of the mirror, he struck a pose.

"Daniel, you’re definitely the most handsome guy alive."

Completely satisfied, he nodded to his reflection. Then he shot into the sky while humming happily, his first destination was the Air Force base.

Specifically, the slightly overweight commander he’d met before. Daniel had thought about what Tony said yesterday and realized he had a point. If he went through all the trouble of hauling a meteorite back to Earth only to get blasted out of the sky again, it would be unbelievably troublesome.

Better to give them a warning first. Flying through the atmosphere was annoying. Not only did the air currents mess up his hairstyle, but he also had to deliberately slow down. Otherwise, he’d create storms wherever he passed.

Maintaining roughly thirty times the speed of sound, Daniel crossed the distance in a little over five minutes. Soon, the familiar Air Force base came into view.

This time, he didn’t force his way in. Instead, he floated in front of a security camera and waved cheerfully.

"Hey, it’s me."

He pointed at himself.

"Open the gate."

His expression couldn’t have looked more sincere. The soldier monitoring the cameras nearly smashed his forehead into the screen.

"Why is this guy back?"

The report immediately went up the chain of command. The supervisor panicked and reported it to his superior. The superior panicked and reported it to the base commander.

At that moment, the commander was drinking coffee to wake himself up, the moment he heard the news, he sprayed coffee across his desk.

"Cough, cough!"

His eyes widened.

"Who?"

"That menace?"

"He’s here again?"

The commander quickly reviewed his recent actions. Had he annoyed Daniel somehow?

No, definitely not. He’d even taken exceptionally good care of Maria. Whatever requests she made, he’d approved them. He’d personally transferred her into a flight assignment. The decision had generated complaints from several officers.

Rumors had even started spreading around the base that he and Maria were having an affair, the commander felt wronged.

’Do I really deserve this?’

’Couldn’t he come next week?’

He was supposed to transfer to New York next week and finally enjoy a peaceful posting.

Every time Daniel appeared, the commander felt like he lost another year of his lifespan. His heart simply couldn’t handle these surprises.

"Why?"

He muttered.

"What did I do to deserve this?"

"Not happy to see me?"

A leisurely voice suddenly sounded from behind him. The commander nearly jumped out of his chair, Daniel had gotten tired of waiting outside.

After locating the commander with his super vision, he’d simply flown directly into the office. Unfortunately, the first thing he’d heard was the commander calling him a menace.

Daniel felt unfairly treated, he’d never hurt the man. At most, he’d caused a little property damage to the base. Was that really enough to earn this kind of reputation?

Judging from the commander’s expression, Daniel was fairly certain that if he took another step forward, the man might pretend to faint.

"No, no, no!"

The commander immediately plastered a smile on his face.

"I’m very happy to see you."

"Just... surprised."

Daniel gave him a suspicious look but couldn’t be bothered arguing. Today was the day he became rich, so it made no sense to waste time.

"I need a favor."

The commander’s posture instantly straightened. As long as Daniel wasn’t here to cause trouble, everything was negotiable.

"Of course, whatever you need, I’ll do my best to help."

"I need to contact your superiors."

Daniel spoke casually.

"The higher the better. Preferably someone important in the Department of Defense."

The commander’s smile froze.

"Well, senior officials are usually very busy and normally they contact us."

"We have to schedule appointments through official channels."

Daniel raised an eyebrow.

"Can you contact them?"

His tone became slightly heavier. The commander immediately surrendered.

"Emergency channels are available."

"Great, " Daniel nodded, "please use them."

The commander didn’t hesitate, he dialed a number he’d almost never used. When the call connected, he handed the phone to Daniel without saying a word. He wanted absolutely no involvement in whatever happened next.

A slightly elderly voice answered.

"Hello?"

"Hello, sir."

Daniel smiled.

"My name is Daniel."

"Daniel Danvers."

There was a brief pause on the other end. Then the man asked calmly.

"What do you want?"

"Nothing major." Daniel’s tone was casual. "You know I’m a law abiding citizen. So, naturally I can’t do anything illegal."

The old man immediately had a bad feeling.

Daniel continued.

"I’m just too poor. So, I’ve decided to bring back some meteorites from space and sell them to support myself."

A beat passed.

"I wanted to let you know in advance. Please don’t panic and shoot me."

The silence that followed lasted several seconds. Even through the phone, Daniel could hear the man’s breathing becoming heavier. Finally, the answer came through clenched teeth.

"Understood."

"Now, anything else?"

"Nope."

The official clearly wanted this conversation over as quickly as possible. Unfortunately, Daniel wasn’t finished.

"Oh right, I also offer satellite launch services, satellite recovery services and some space tourism."

"I can acquire specialty products from the Moon, Mars, Saturn, Mercury, Venus, Pluto, pretty much anywhere in the Solar System."

"If you’re interested, give me a call. As long as the money is good, the service will be excellent."

The official rubbed his forehead. He felt exhausted. They had spent the entire day discussing Daniel.

The President had summoned him multiple times. Think tanks had proposed countless plans, experts had argued endlessly, everyone was developing headaches trying to figure out how to handle this living natural disaster and now the disaster himself was making sales calls.

Did he really think the United States military enjoyed being pushed around and strong armed?

If they could beat him, they’d have dissected him already. Why was he so proud of himself?

"We currently have no need for such services."

The official sounded tired.

"Alright." Daniel wasn’t discouraged. "If you ever do, let me know."

"I’ll even give you a patriot discount."

"Oh, and I’ll probably be making several trips today. So, don’t shoot at me, also, no need to worry, I have the experience now."

"I guarantee not a single meteorite will damage the United States."

"And could I get your direct phone number? We should stay in touch..."

Click...

The line went dead. The official had hung up. Daniel stared at the phone, then shrugged. He wasn’t bothered, turning back towards the commander, he smiled.

"Alright, I’m leaving."

"We’ll meet again sometime."

The commander smiled politely. Inside, however, he was screaming.

’No thank you. Tomorrow I’m calling in sick.’

’I’ll take medical leave. If you can still find me, you win.’

Before he could say anything, Daniel vanished. A sonic boom echoed across the sky. As he broke through the atmosphere, Daniel narrowed his eyes slightly. Every time he flew directly towards the sun, he felt incredibly comfortable, almost sleepy.

Along the way, he passed several satellites, this time he even waved at them. Unlike last time, he didn’t smash any of them. He understood they were watching because they were nervous.

Not long afterward, he reached the asteroid belt. Surrounded by countless drifting rocks, Daniel began searching. After a few minutes, he found one that looked expensive.

The meteorite was pitch black, Dark, heavy, and mysterious. Just looking at it made him feel like it had to be worth a fortune.

"Yep, this one’s definitely valuable."

Grinning, he positioned himself behind it and started pushing it toward Earth.

This time he didn’t yell, "Superman is on the move!" He was almost an adult now, not a kid anymore.

Soon, Earth appeared before him. Daniel stopped just outside the atmosphere.

Thousands of miles away, several senior officials watching satellite feeds immediately became nervous. What was he doing now?

Then they saw Daniel turn towards one of the satellites and smile. He muttered a sentence.

There was no audio, only lip movement. But they understood.

"I’m looking for a place."

A moment later, Daniel found a suitable direction. Then he pushed the meteorite into Earth’s atmosphere. A blazing trail of fire streaked across the sky, the meteorite descended perfectly.

There were no explosions, no disasters, no accidents, as it landed neatly in an uninhabited area outside Boston.

Mission accomplished, Daniel dropped the meteorite and immediately flew back to the rooftop. Before he even entered the building, his excited voice echoed through the entire penthouse.

"Tony!"

"Get out here!"

"I brought back a meteorite!"

"Hurry up and help me sell it!"

At that moment, Daniel could practically see dollar signs dancing before his eyes.
