Chapter 63: Daniel’s Worry
Chapter 63: Chapter 63: Daniel’s Worry
"You knew I was coming?"
Daniel asked in return.
"I’ve been watching you for quite some time."
Instead of directly answering his question, the Ancient One calmly spoke her own thoughts. The words instantly made Daniel’s heart skip a beat.
What did that mean? Did she know he was a transmigrator?
For a brief moment, Daniel seriously considered whether he should turn hostile. Did he have a chance of winning if he attacked now? His transmigrator identity was the greatest secret he possessed, and he would never allow a second person to know about it.
"When you first flew beyond Earth two years ago, I noticed you."
The Ancient One’s voice remained as gentle as ever, her speech was unhurried, calm, and soothing. Listening to her felt like standing in a warm spring breeze. Seriously, with a voice like that, she could probably become the leader of some cult without even trying.
Only then did Daniel suppress the uneasiness in his heart. He imitated her posture, placing his hands behind his back and maintaining a calm smile as he listened.
"From the moment I saw you, the flow of time began to change."
"The future..."
She suddenly stopped, which made Daniel nearly exploded from frustration.
What was that supposed to mean? Like continue! What happened to the future? Don’t leave him hanging like that!
"The future is something you’ll experience for yourself."
A faint smile appeared on her face.
"After all, the future belongs to your generation."
Daniel almost choked, that wasn’t an explanation at all. Then the Ancient One continued.
"Your strength is extraordinary."
"But more importantly, you possess something far more precious."
"A strong heart."
"You were not led astray by your power."
"I have always believed that true strength comes from the spirit rather than the body."
"You’ve done very well."
For the first time since arriving, she openly praised him. Daniel immediately nodded in agreement, he thought so too.
Those words struck directly at the thing he was proudest of. After all, in his previous life, he had been nothing more than an ordinary person. Then suddenly, in this life, he had obtained overwhelming power.
Power beyond imagination and he hadn’t paid any price for it. There was no suffering, no sacrifice, no hardship. He had practically become invincible overnight. The power had come too easily. So, easily that it frightened him.
People who become rich overnight often collapse after the initial excitement fades. There were countless stories of lottery winners whose lives ended in ruin.
Daniel often wondered what qualifications he had to deserve such power. At times, he was genuinely afraid, sometimes he even had nightmares.
Nightmares where he slaughtered countless people without restraint. Nightmares where he personally killed John, killed Mary, killed Carol.
Those dreams always left him drenched in cold sweat. That was why he constantly reminded himself of one thing, restraint
He was a human being, not a monster, not a devil. As long as you continued to see yourself as human, then no matter what you became, you would remain human.
Fortunately, Daniel had held on. He could proudly place a hand on his chest and say that he had never used his abilities to commit evil.
The Wakanda incident didn’t count. That had been mutually beneficial cooperation. Otherwise, why would he and T’Challa be such good friends now?
Power should exist but abusing power should not. Daniel never wanted to become the kind of person his family and friends would one day be forced to kill.
What was the point of sitting alone upon a throne? What value was there in ruling everything if no one you loved remained by your side?
In short, Daniel simply thought he was amazing. At this moment, he found the Ancient One incredibly pleasant to look at.
’As expected of the Sorcerer Supreme.’
’She really knows how to talk.’
"Haha! The Sorcerer Supreme is truly remarkable."
Daniel laughed.
"I should’ve visited you sooner."
"Your life insights are incredibly helpful."
Then he leaned forward slightly.
"How about praising me a little more?"
For the first time in centuries, the Ancient One nearly lost her composure, her expression froze for a fraction of a second. Then she smiled again.
Daniel grinned so hard his eyes narrowed into crescents. For a moment, he had completely forgotten why he’d come to Kamar-Taj in the first place.
His frustration was gone, his anxiety was gone, and his mood had improved tremendously. Of course, finding Carol was still important, but right now, he felt much better.
"Sorcerer Supreme."
Daniel’s expression gradually became serious.
"Do you know why I came here?"
Hope filled his eyes. He desperately wanted an answer, news about Carol, anything at all.
"I do."
The Ancient One’s voice remained calm and steady.
"You don’t need to worry."
"Carol will be fine."
"When you meet again in the future..."
A strange smile appeared on her face.
"The scene will be quite interesting."
Daniel blinked.
"Interesting?"
The moment he heard her answer, the heavy weight hanging over his heart finally disappeared, his entire body relaxed. If the Ancient One said Carol would be fine, then she would be fine. Daniel trusted her character enough to believe that.
The next time they met, he suddenly felt the urge to punch Carol.
"I swear, next time I see her, I’m going to hit her."
Daniel spoke through gritted teeth. Carol’s disappearance had nearly driven him insane. The stress alone had almost made him start losing hair. If this continued for a few more months, he might actually go bald.
And if that happened... would he still be this handsome? Probably not.
"You tell me."
Daniel began venting.
"She’s the older sister, but she’s the one constantly making people worry."
"I’ve practically exhausted myself looking after her."
"When she wanted to join the military, I dragged her to Wakanda."
"At that point, I was basically robbing them."
"I got her self-defense abilities."
"I got her a vibranium combat uniform."
"And what happened?"
"She still got into trouble!"
Daniel said in frustration.
"My foolish sister! She didn’t even wear the vibranium uniform when she went out! That’s just stupid!"
Then he pointed proudly at himself.
"Look at me. I wear mine every day. It’s warm in winter, cool in summer, also it absorbs sweat and doesn’t even need washing."
"I’ve owned this outfit for two years."
"Two years!"
"I haven’t washed it once."
Then he shamelessly leaned towards the Ancient One.
"Go ahead. Take a sniff, it still smells great."
The Ancient One quietly took two steps backward. Without changing her expression, she smiled.
"Isn’t life interesting precisely because it’s full of unexpected events?"
"Only if they’re good surprises."
Daniel immediately disagreed.
"Say I buy a lottery ticket and win a hundred dollars."
"That’s a wonderful surprise. But if I step outside in the morning and immediately step in dog poop?"
"Then my whole day is ruined."
He sighed.
"Look at what happened with Carol. It scared me to death."
"You have no idea. I stormed into a military base looking all mighty and intimidating. Everyone there was terrified of me."
His voice suddenly became quieter. It was more serious and honest.
"But the truth is... I was terrified."
The joking expression disappeared from his face. For the first time, genuine fear showed in his eyes.
"I was terrified something had happened to Carol."
"What if she really got hurt?"
"What if she died?"
"I don’t know if I’d lose my mind."
His fists slowly clenched.
"She’s my sister."
"My family."
A cold edge entered his voice.
"If anyone hurts my family... I’ll throw them into the Sun."
"And very slowly.... I’ll watch every drop of moisture evaporate from their body."
The room seemed to grow colder. Those words weren’t a joke, not even slightly. Daniel meant every single one of them.
The Ancient One remained completely unaffected, at least on the surface.
"It’s obvious. You care deeply about your family."
What Daniel didn’t know was that while he’d been waiting earlier, the Ancient One had been observing the future through the flow of time.
The moment Daniel lost control and flew towards the Air Force base in his rage, the timeline had nearly descended into chaos.
For a brief instant, the future had almost ceased to exist. Fortunately, things had stabilized. Otherwise, the consequences would’ve been unimaginable.
"Oh, right."
Daniel suddenly remembered something.
"When will Carol and I see each other again?"
The Ancient One answered immediately.
"Six years."
Daniel froze.
"...What?"
The smile disappeared from his face.
"Six years?"
Instantly, he felt terrible again.
Forget himself. How was he supposed to explain six years of Carol’s absence to their parents?
And more importantly, Daniel happened to have an extremely serious sister complex. If he couldn’t talk to Carol for a week, he’d already start feeling restless. If he couldn’t see her for half a month, he’d probably lose his mind.
Six years? That was practically a death sentence.
"Sorcerer Supreme."
Daniel stood up immediately, his expression became completely serious.
"Please open a portal for me.’’
’I’ll go bring Carol back myself."
His voice contained a sincerity unlike anything he’d shown before.
