Chapter 55: Daniel’s Anger
Chapter 55: Chapter 55: Daniel’s Anger
Susan noticed the look on Daniel’s face and tried to reassure him.
"Don’t worry, Daniel. Maybe Carol got held up by something today and didn’t have time to call."
Daniel immediately shook his head.
"No. Carol and I always talk at this exact time. A few minutes late is one thing, but half an hour? That’s impossible."
Back when Carol had first enlisted, Daniel used to fly over to see her every few days.
Eventually, Carol put a stop to that. The two had agreed to a weekly phone call instead.
For two whole years, neither of them had missed a single one.
Not once.
Daniel decided to check on her himself. A growing sense of unease had settled in his chest as something felt wrong.
He raised his head and activated his super vision, looking toward the Air Force base where Carol was stationed.
Nothing.
Still nothing.
He searched the entire base.
Every building.
Every training area.
Every hangar.
Carol was nowhere to be found.
He saw a group of officers gathered in a meeting. He saw personnel transporting a damaged fighter jet back to the base. Then he saw Maria.
Her eyes were red and she looked devastated.
Daniel’s attention sharpened. Then he noticed what she was holding.
A photograph.... a picture of her and Carol together. Maria stared at it with obvious grief. For a moment, Daniel froze.
Then...
Boom!
It felt as if something exploded inside his mind. Blood rushed to his head and his heartbeat thundered in his ears.
"Carol..."
His pupils contracted.
"Something happened to Carol!"
The sorrow lasted only a fraction of a second. What followed was overwhelming rage.
A fury unlike anything he had ever experienced before, it flooded his body. Burned through his veins and it consumed every rational thought.
"Who?"
His voice came out as a growl.
"WHO DARED TOUCH CAROL?!"
Daniel’s voice echoed across the rooftop. He refused to believe Carol had simply died in an accident.
With her physical abilities, even a plane crash shouldn’t have killed her. Unless the aircraft exploded instantly before she could react, she would have survived.
Someone had done something.
Someone was responsible.
The sudden outburst startled Susan, Tony, and T’Challa. Before any of them could react...
Crack!
The phone in Daniel’s hand exploded into fragments. The next instant, he shot into the sky.
Even in his fury, Daniel instinctively controlled the shockwave around Susan and Tony.
Otherwise, with the speed he was about to unleash, the resulting air pressure would have torn them apart. Only T’Challa might have survived.
The moment Daniel reached open air, he stopped holding back.
Boom!
A deafening sonic explosion ripped across the sky. He shattered the sound barrier instantly. Violent winds erupted in every direction.
Even after Daniel had intentionally reduced the impact, Susan and Tony were still nearly knocked off their feet.
Several moments later, the rooftop finally became quiet again. The three remaining friends stared at one another. There was complete silence, then Tony finally spoke.
"What the fuck?"
He pointed at the empty sky.
"What the hell just happened?"
Susan looked just as stunned.
"I... I don’t know."
She swallowed.
"Daniel didn’t get Carol’s phone call."
"Then he just... flew away."
After a pause, she added quietly, "I think something happened to Carol."
The atmosphere immediately became heavy. A few moments later, Tony looked toward the sky again.
"Wait."
"Did Daniel just fly away?"
"My eyes weren’t playing tricks on me, right?"
"No," Susan replied.
"The wind from him taking off nearly blew us over."
Tony stood frozen. His brain was struggling to process everything. Finally, he slowly turned towards T’Challa.
"Care to explain?"
T’Challa sighed. There was no point hiding it anymore.
"Daniel has... certain special abilities."
"Abilities that normal people don’t possess."
Tony stared at him. Then pointed toward the sky.
"Special abilities?"
"Breaking the sound barrier in an instant is what you call just special abilities?"
The expression on his face clearly said: Are you fucking serious?
T’Challa hesitated.
"Actually... he can go much faster."
Tony’s eyes twitched.
"What?"
"As far as I know," T’Challa continued, "two years ago Daniel crossed most of the Solar System in a single night."
"He even slept on the Sun before coming back."
Again, there was a complete silence, as no one spoke.
Tony and Susan felt their worldviews collapsing. Everything they thought they knew about reality had just been thrown into a shredder. They needed time to process it.
T’Challa, meanwhile, wasn’t thinking about any of that. He was worried about Daniel, and he was worried about Carol.
Over the years, he had come to see Carol as an older sister. Closing his eyes briefly, he prayed silently.
’Please let this be a misunderstanding.’
’Please let Carol be okay.’
...
Far above the clouds, Daniel no longer cared about controlling his speed. The atmosphere exploded around him. Massive streams of air spiraled in his wake.
The pressure disturbances grew larger and larger. A hurricane was beginning to form behind him. Less than three seconds later...
Perhaps even less...
Daniel arrived at Carol’s Air Force base. A violent storm descended with him. The sky darkened and powerful winds swept across the facility.
Hovering above the base, Daniel looked down with icy eyes.
"Tell me."
His cold voice echoed across the entire installation.
"Where is Carol?"
The guards outside instinctively looked up. The next second, the violent winds hit them. Several soldiers were blown off their feet. Others desperately grabbed railings and barriers to avoid being carried away.
After the sudden storm finally weakened, they saw him.
A man floating in the sky.
Immediately, alarms rang throughout the entire base.
Daniel remained motionless. He was just watching and waiting. The alarm triggered an immediate response.
Within moments, fully armed military personnel rushed out from every direction.
Then they looked up and froze.
"Oh my God!"
"Is that... a person?"
"Is he some kind of god?"
"Jesus Christ..."
Shock spread through the ranks. Their orderly formation quickly fell apart.
"Who is in charge here?"
Daniel’s voice rang out.
A middle aged officer stepped forward.
"I am."
Daniel looked at him.
"Do you have sufficient authority?"
"I want the highest ranking officer on this base."
The man immediately grabbed his radio.
"I’ll notify him."
"Sir... you may want to come outside."
The base commander had already seen Daniel through the surveillance cameras.
And honestly? He had absolutely no desire to go outside.
Unfortunately, Daniel had specifically requested the highest ranking officer and everyone knew who that was.
Under countless eyes, he had no choice. Gritting his teeth, he walked out. Truthfully, he was extremely terrified.
At the same time, he silently cursed the officer who had called him. He’d remember that man’s name later.
The commander was an older man with graying hair and a slightly overweight build. His steps were unsteady as he approached.
"What can I do for you?" he asked, trying to sound calm.
Daniel slowly descended from the sky. The soldiers protecting the commander immediately became tense.
Weapons were raised. Guns pointed directly at him. They were frightened.... terrified, even. But they were still soldiers, so training overrode fear.
Daniel glanced at the guns.
"Tell your men to put away those toys."
"They won’t help you."
The soldiers became even more agitated. The initial shock had begun to fade and now they clung to the belief that the weapons in their hands could protect them.
The commander hesitated before raising a hand.
"Lower your weapons."
Reluctantly, the soldiers obeyed.
Daniel looked directly into the man’s eyes.
"Where is Carol?"
Straight to the point.
The commander’s expression changed. He remembered the name immediately. They had literally just finished discussing the matter.
Project Pegasus.
The test flight.
The pilot.
Carol Danvers.
The project had ended in disaster. The commander desperately wanted to tell Daniel everything.
The young man standing before him was dangerous.
No... Dangerous wasn’t enough, he was terrifying. Yet if he revealed classified military information, his career would be over.
Taking a deep breath, he forced himself to answer.
"I’m sorry."
"That’s classified military information."
"I’m not authorized to disclose it."
For several seconds, Daniel simply stared at him. Then he spoke.
"Not authorized?"
His voice became frighteningly calm.
Daniel turned his head slightly, as red light began gathering in his eyes.
The commander suddenly felt every hair on his body stand up. The next instant...
SHHHHHHHH!!!
Twin crimson beams erupted across the base.
Fighter jets.
Buildings.
Communication towers.
Hangars.
Everything in their path was sliced apart. The entire base split into two halves. The ground itself was carved open.
A massive glowing trench stretched across the facility. The smell of burning metal and scorched earth filled the air.
There was complete silence.
Daniel shut off his heat vision. Then he looked back at the commander. The man’s face had gone completely pale, and his eyes were filled with disbelief.
With satisfaction, Daniel nodded slightly.
Then asked calmly.
"Now."
"Are you authorized to tell me?"
