Marvel: Reincarnated as Superman
Chapter 42: Material Guy (Bonus)
Chapter 42: Chapter 42: Material Guy (Bonus)
Once they entered the house, Mary and John saw T’Challa.
Daniel introduced him properly, explaining that they had met during their travels.
He also told them that T’Challa would be staying with them for a while and would be attending college alongside him when school started.
Daniel had already decided to enroll at MIT.
Mary warmly welcomed T’Challa.
He simply smiled.
In this era, Black people in America were treated very differently than they would be decades later. Discrimination was still widespread in many aspects of society.
Fortunately, Smallville was relatively peaceful in that regard. There were quite a few Black residents in town, and people generally got along well without much prejudice.
After everyone sat down, Mary brought over some drinks before heading off to prepare a room for T’Challa.
The remaining four settled onto the living room sofa and chatted.
Most of the conversation revolved around their experiences in New York City.
Before returning home, they had already agreed not to mention Wakanda.
Even T’Challa’s background story had been prepared in advance.
According to the story, he was the son of a wealthy Wakandan family who had come to America to study.
Alone and without relatives in New York, he had met Daniel and Carol by chance. After learning that he would also be attending MIT, they had invited him to stay with their family.
For now, Daniel had no intention of revealing his abilities to Mary and John.
The two elderly people had spent their entire lives living peacefully in Smallville.
He didn’t want to shock them too much.
After all, some of his abilities were beyond unbelievable.
...
As a prince raised from childhood with the finest education Wakanda could provide, T’Challa was articulate, knowledgeable, and exceptionally polite.
John quickly found himself enjoying their conversation.
Especially after T’Challa presented gifts for both him and Mary.
After that, John became even more enthusiastic.
The gifts were two traditional Wakandan masks.
Made of gold.
Meanwhile, Daniel brought out the two bracelets King T’Chaka had given him and repeatedly instructed Mary and John to keep them on at all times.
Mary happily put hers on immediately.
John, on the other hand, looked somewhat disgusted.
"What kind of grown man wears a bracelet?" he grumbled. "Looks ridiculous."
Before Daniel could even argue back, John quietly slipped the bracelet onto his wrist himself.
Then he admired it for several seconds.
Daniel "..."
John was exactly the type who said one thing and did another.
Before they knew it, it was getting late.
After seeing John yawn several times, everyone decided to call it a night and return to their rooms.
The next morning, Daniel announced that he was taking T’Challa to Boston to buy necessities for college and daily life.
Since John didn’t have anything planned, he decided to drive them.
Carol joined as well.
She was bored anyway.
After breakfast, the four set off together.
They had invited Mary too, but she insisted there was still work to be done around the house.
No matter how much they persuaded her, she refused to go.
Once they arrived in Boston, they headed straight for the shopping district.
The moment they entered the mall, T’Challa activated his full spending mode.
Clothes.
Shoes.
Anything that looked decent after trying it on.
Two sets.
Swipe card.
Pay.
Leave.
His movements were smooth, efficient, and completely free of hesitation.
Daniel ended up receiving a high end tailored suit and several designer outfits in the process.
T’Challa bought something for everyone.
Daniel got gifts.
Carol got gifts.
John got gifts.
Even Mary, who had stayed home, wasn’t forgotten.
At first, John felt embarrassed.
He thought T’Challa was spending far too much money and tried to refuse.
Eventually, after being persuaded by the other three, he happily accepted everything.
Daniel and Carol certainly weren’t going to be polite with T’Challa.
Both of them knew perfectly well that he was absurdly rich.
This level of spending was pocket change to him.
Besides, they had already accepted Vibranium suits worth far more than any of these clothes.
How could they possibly be embarrassed over some designer outfits?
By now, the two of them had developed skin thicker than city walls.
They were practically professionals at freeloading.
Watching T’Challa casually swipe his card over and over again, Daniel felt incredibly jealous.
It only strengthened his determination to become rich himself.
’When I get the chance, I’m going into space.’
’If I don’t find a giant chunk of gold, I’m not coming back.’
Daniel silently made up his mind.
Money had powers too.
In America, there was one universal truth.
If you had money, life became incredibly easy.
Of course, if someone offered Daniel a choice between Superman’s powers and unlimited wealth...
He’d still choose Superman’s powers.
...
At noon, T’Challa treated everyone to an extravagant lunch.
Then they continued their shopping spree for more than two additional hours before finally stopping.
To T’Challa’s surprise, spending money was actually fun.
Back in Wakanda, everything he needed had always been provided.
Food, clothing, transportation, housing, he had never worried about any of it.
Now, swiping his card over and over again felt strangely satisfying.
Especially because some stores would initially look down on him because of his skin color.
Yet after he spent thousands of dollars in their shops, those same employees suddenly became incredibly respectful.
Their smiles were so eager they practically looked like dogs wagging their tails for scraps.
"Please come again!"
"You’re welcome anytime!"
The change in attitude was genuinely amusing.
By the time they were ready to return home, every single person was carrying bags.
The car was completely packed.
At one point, John even asked Daniel to talk some sense into T’Challa.
He felt the young man was spending money like water.
Daniel’s response was simple.
"T’Challa’s family owns mines."
He didn’t mention Vibranium mines.
Instead, he said gold mines and diamond mines.
After hearing that, John never brought the subject up again.
...
By the time they returned to Smallville, it was dinner time.
Mary had already prepared a meal and was waiting for them.
The moment she saw the four returning, she nearly jumped in surprise.
Every single one of them had undergone a complete transformation.
Leading the group was John.
Despite it being evening, he was wearing the expensive sunglasses T’Challa had bought him.
A cigar hung from his mouth.
Around his neck was a thick gold chain gifted by T’Challa.
Even though it was the middle of summer, he was fully dressed in a designer suit and polished leather shoes.
He looked like he was trying to audition for a gangster movie.
And somehow he didn’t seem to care about the heat.
Daniel wasn’t nearly as outrageous.
He had simply changed into a new outfit.
Though he couldn’t resist repeatedly showing off the diamond studded watch on his wrist.
Carol was dressed in stylish leather clothing and wore sunglasses as well.
T’Challa was the modest one here, he wore an entirely elegant black suit.
After entering the house, Mary immediately began criticizing their ridiculous outfits.
Other than Daniel, every single one of them was dressed far too heavily for summer.
John was already sweating profusely.
What puzzled her most was that Carol and T’Challa looked completely unaffected.
After an entire day of shopping, everyone was starving.
Before Mary could continue her lecture, John interrupted.
"Enough talking. Let’s eat!"
Mary shot him an annoyed look.
However, because T’Challa was present, she decided to spare him some dignity and didn’t say anything else.
Instead, she headed to the kitchen and brought out the food.
During dinner, John continuously urged T’Challa to eat more.
His attitude was noticeably warmer than it had been the previous day.
When T’Challa first arrived, John had certainly been welcoming.
But nowhere near this enthusiastic.
Watching the scene unfold, Carol finally understood where Daniel’s personality came from.
There was no doubt about it.
He had inherited it from John.
The expressions on the father and son’s faces were practically identical.
Back in Wakanda, Daniel had treated King T’Chaka exactly the same way.
