Marvel: I Am The Lord of the Shadow Dimension
Chapter 44: Chapter 44: The Avengers Initiative
The next morning, Luke was deep in a dream, locked in a brutal chess match with the Duke of Zhou. Just as he was about to deliver the final checkmate, a loud, obnoxious knocking on his front door violently ripped him back to reality.
"What the hell?!" Luke groaned, completely refusing to move a muscle. He mentally ordered a Shadow Ninja to go check the peephole.
"Oh, thanks! Hey, Luke! Where are you?" Tony's overly cheerful, highly punchable voice echoed from the hallway as the ninja opened the door.
It wasn't just because Tony had ruined a perfectly good dream; Tony's voice today sounded exceptionally punchable.
"What's wrong with you? Why are you here so early?!"
Luke finally managed to drag himself out of bed. He glared at Tony, who was looking incredibly energetic and refreshed. "I didn't fall asleep until 3:00 AM last night, and you definitely went to sleep way later than I did! How are you this perky?"
Luke yawned massively and stumbled into the bathroom, splashing some freezing cold water on his face to wake up.
Walking back out, he looked at Tony, whose face held absolutely zero trace of fatigue, and even sported a wide, incredibly stupid grin.
"So... I take it things went well with Pepper last night?"
"Of course they did. When I commit to a project, I always succeed," Tony boasted shamelessly.
"Give me a break. You're just incredibly lucky Pepper even puts up with you. You're a middle-aged man pushing forty; stop acting like a high schooler who just got his first girlfriend," Luke snorted, glancing at Tony's midsection.
"And for the record, you finally managed to turn that beer belly into actual muscle when you were stuck in that cave, but you completely lost it again after you got back! All that boxing practice clearly isn't helping."
Tony looked deeply offended. He aggressively sucked his gut in, nearly popping a button on his expensive shirt. Luke just rolled his eyes in disgust and walked to the dining table.
"So seriously, why are you here so early?"
Luke happily accepted a steaming hot paper bag from a nearby Shadow Ninja. He pulled out a crispy youtiao (fried dough stick) and took a massive bite, washing it down with a sip of hot soy milk.
"Your breakfast actually smells amazing. Is that some kind of niche cuisine?" Tony asked, watching Luke eat with genuine enjoyment.
"It's youtiao and soy milk. It's a highly traditional breakfast where I'm from, and it's delicious. But we also have xiaolongbao, egg pancakes, scallion pancakes, giant pork buns, savory sauce buns, sweet bean buns..."
Once Luke started listing Chinese breakfast foods, he literally couldn't stop. Tony quickly held up a hand in a 'time out' gesture.
"Alright, alright, I admit your breakfast is ten times better than mine," Tony sighed. He made a mental note to hire a professional Chinese chef immediately so he and Pepper could have a different, amazing breakfast every single day. 3
"Ten times is an understatement," Luke muttered. When he first arrived in this universe, his daily breakfast was either a bland sandwich or plain toast, and it had honestly made him want to throw up.
Eventually, he just pulled up a bunch of traditional Chinese cooking tutorials on YouTube, forced ten Shadow Ninjas to watch them and practice in the kitchen, and fired the bottom nine until he had a single, master-chef ninja dedicated solely to cooking his meals. 1
Tony didn't bother arguing about food. "Anyway, your favorite cyclops Director called me bright and early this morning. He wants us both to meet him at a secure location to discuss something 'highly important.' The bastard woke Pepper up, so I got kicked out of the bed."
"Wait, what?!" Luke was genuinely shocked.
"Pepper's dad actually let her spend the night with you? Isn't that basically delivering the sheep to the wolf?!"
"Actually, after I officially confessed to Pepper last night, I had a very long, very firm 'man-to-man' conversation with her father," Tony said. Remembering the absolute verbal thrashing Pepper's father had given him, Tony's eye twitched slightly.
"I'm going to assume that conversation did not go smoothly," Luke guessed, seeing Tony's expression.
"It was an incredibly difficult negotiation, but I ultimately emerged victorious," Tony swore defensively. Aside from his own father, absolutely no one had ever dared to lecture him for that long!
Well, maybe his mother.
"Anyway, enough about that. I think the pirate is probably getting impatient," Tony said, clapping his hands together. He urged Luke to finish his breakfast quickly so they could leave.
Walking out to Tony's sports car, Luke noticed several pedestrians immediately pulling out their phones to snap pictures of them.
"Looks like I'm going to have to move again," Luke sighed.
"Look on the bright side! When they post those photos online, it acts as free advertising and drives up sales for our smartphone company! Seriously, who could resist a sleek device that can browse the internet, take high-res photos, provide GPS navigation, and play music? Oh, and it can actually make phone calls too!"
Tony grinned at the paparazzi and gave a peace sign. He nudged Luke, signaling him to play along. Reluctantly, Luke offered a forced, awkward smile to the cameras.
Later that day, the photo of Tony's charismatic grin next to Luke's painfully awkward fake smile went completely viral, genuinely driving another massive spike in smartphone sales.
After a long drive, Tony finally pulled up to a massive, seemingly abandoned warehouse on the outskirts of the city.
"Is S.H.I.E.L.D. finally running out of taxpayer funding? Why are we meeting in a creepy, abandoned warehouse?" Tony muttered, glancing at the few heavily armed agents standing guard outside as he and Luke walked in.
Before Luke could respond, a voice echoed from deep within the unlit warehouse.
"If the great Tony Stark is offering to inject some capital into our organization, I'd be more than happy to accept."
Tony turned toward the sound. The interior of the warehouse was pitch black. The only thing visible in the darkness was a single, glowing white eye.
"Pfft—HAHAHAHA!" Luke absolutely lost it, clutching his stomach in laughter. He honestly hadn't expected Fury to have so little self-awareness regarding his skin tone and the lighting in the room.
Luke gave the floating eyeball a thumbs-up. Somewhere in the darkness, a vein visibly popped on Fury's forehead, but obviously, neither Luke nor Tony could see it.
"Is something funny?" Fury asked Tony, his voice dangerously low.
Tony had been trying incredibly hard to keep a straight face, but hearing Fury speak from the void finally broke him.
"Pfft—HAHAHA! Luke, did you see?! When he talks, you can see his teeth floating!" Tony couldn't stop laughing. 6
As Luke and Tony howled with laughter, Fury's mood plummeted into the abyss.
He shot a terrifying glare at the nearby S.H.I.E.L.D. agents—who were desperately trying not to laugh themselves—and walked over to the wall, violently flicking the light switch on to finally reveal his entire body. 1
Luke and Tony laughed for another solid minute before finally rubbing their sore jaws and walking into the makeshift office.
"So, why did you call us here?" Luke asked, wiping a tear from his eye.
"I have a proposal. I want you both to read it," Fury said coldly, slamming two thick file folders onto the metal table.
Luke looked at the bold emblem printed on the cover. He raised an eyebrow and opened the file to skim the contents.
Tony, however, started critiquing it immediately.
"The 'Avengers' Initiative? What kind of ridiculous name is that? Are we supposed to just wait around until someone hits us first so we can 'avenge' them? I personally prefer to preemptively eliminate the threat before they strike. Don't you agree?"
Tony flipped through a few pages of rules and regulations before casually tossing the file back onto the table.
"So, you're officially inviting us to join your little boy band?"
"No," Fury said flatly. "I just wanted you to review the initiative. What do you think of the concept?"
"Uh..." Tony thought for a moment. "It's a solid concept. Gathering highly specialized individuals to handle the catastrophic events that normal military forces can't. Yeah, I think it's a good plan."
To Tony, the idea of a single, highly capable individual—or a small team of them—solving massive problems perfectly aligned with his own superhero philosophy.
"Okay, so Luke and I are being invited to join?"
"No," Fury repeated, shaking his head. "I am only informing you of the team's existence. The only person currently being offered an official roster spot... is Consultant Luke."
Fury turned his single eye toward Luke, who was still slowly reading the operational guidelines, waiting for his answer.
Before Luke could speak, Tony's ego flared up.
"Wait, hold on. Why does Luke get an invite, but I don't?!"
Fury glared at Tony. "Because your psychological profile indicates you are highly arrogant, dangerously impulsive, lack any fundamental concept of teamwork, and consistently refuse to follow direct orders. And most importantly... I don't like you."
Tony scoffed, genuinely offended. "You've been spying on Luke this whole time to evaluate him?!"
"No. I've been spying on you," Fury corrected smoothly. He reached out and casually peeled a microscopic, black listening device off the underside of Tony's shirt collar. "As for him, he and I already came to an understanding months ago."
"Looks like I really need to find a new dry cleaner," Tony shrugged, trying to play off his embarrassment.
Luke was actually a little surprised. Ever since he realized S.H.I.E.L.D. was tailing him months ago, he had constantly deployed Shadow Ninjas to sweep his surroundings for bugs or agents, but they hadn't found a single one.
He had genuinely assumed S.H.I.E.L.D.'s stealth tech was just that good. It turned out Fury had actually honored their agreement and completely stopped surveilling him.
"So, what do you think of the team?" Fury asked, bringing the focus back to Luke.
Luke met Fury's gaze. He thought for a moment before casually tossing the file back onto the table.
"While I think the team is a great idea in theory... I'm going to have to respectfully decline the invitation to join."
Luke watched Fury's expression remain completely unchanged. 'Yep, the pirate already predicted my answer.'
Tony, however, was the most shocked person in the room.
"Why?!" Tony demanded.
"Because I absolutely refuse to have some government bureaucrat dictating my daily schedule. I don't want my movements tracked, my actions approved by a committee, or my highly classified personal information sitting in a government database waiting to be hacked," Luke explained simply.
'Besides, I'm the one who collects blackmail on other people. I can't let S.H.I.E.L.D. build a blackmail file on me!'
"You don't seem surprised at all," Tony noted, looking at Fury's calm reaction.
"Don't be an idiot, Tony. He's literally the greatest spy in the world. He read my psychological profile perfectly," Luke said.
Tony frowned but didn't argue. He knew Luke valued his absolute freedom above all else, but it was still shocking to see him casually turn down a spot on what was essentially a global superhero strike team.
"Will you at least continue your duties as a freelance security consultant?" Fury asked, his voice low.
Luke nodded. "Yeah, I can do that. Even though I don't exactly need the paycheck anymore, it's a good way to spice up my boring daily life."
Fury nodded in satisfaction. He then turned back to Tony. "And as for you. Would you be willing to act as an official..."
"Security Consultant? Absolutely!" Tony interrupted before Fury could even finish the sentence. "I'd love to! It'll give me an excuse to legally punch a few vampires in the face. That perfectly aligns with my superhero brand."
"Of course, S.H.I.E.L.D. definitely can't afford my hourly consulting fee, but I'm sure we can figure out an alternative compensation package."
The next day...
Senator Stern, forcing a painfully fake, deeply strained smile, pinned official Medals of Honor onto the chests of Tony, Luke, and Rhodey in front of a massive crowd of reporters.
"I feel incredibly awkward right now," Luke whispered to Tony out of the side of his mouth.
"Relax. Just smile for the cameras," Tony muttered back, handing Luke a pair of stylish sunglasses. 1
And so, the exceptionally short Senator Stern stood awkwardly in the front, while behind him stood three men of varying skin tones, all wearing identical, perfectly practiced 'superhero' smiles and sunglasses.
"Perfect!" Luke grinned, taking his smartphone back from a Shadow Ninja who had been taking photos from the crowd.
Later that evening, Luke uploaded a massive photo dump to his blog. The album was titled "Iron Man 2: Behind the Scenes."
It included highly embarrassing photos of Rhodey pinned under the Troll Ninjas, majestic photos of Tony synthesizing the new element in his living room, epic shots of the Shadowkhan dismantling the Hammer Drones, and finally, a brutal photo of a heavily beaten Ivan Vanko.
He also reorganized his older photos into an album titled "Iron Man 1."
Scrolling through the thousands of new comments, Luke's eye suddenly caught a very specific username in the replies:
Stan 'The Cameo King' Lee. 4
Luke smiled a knowing, nostalgic smile that only he could truly understand, and turned his phone off.
'Well, the Iron Man 2 plotline is officially over. Coulson already left for New Mexico. That means a certain hammer-wielding, brother-obsessed prince is about to take a vacation to Earth.'
Luke quickly turned his phone back on and searched the news for any reports of strange 'meteor strikes' or atmospheric anomalies. He quickly found a highly obscure, localized report from a small desert town.
Checking the coordinates of the 'meteor' strike, Luke immediately bought a commercial plane ticket to New Mexico.
Meanwhile, a certain unnamed S.H.I.E.L.D. agent was currently driving through the scorching desert heat toward New Mexico, completely unaware that someone was about to beat him to the prize.
Luke had initially called Tony to tell him he was leaving town, but Tony didn't answer. It turned out Tony was furious that Pepper had spent her entire day dealing with Stark Industries fallout instead of spending time with him. In a fit of romantic rebellion, Tony had basically kidnapped her from the office and dragged her on a surprise luxury vacation to make up for lost time.
'Classic Tony,' Luke nodded approvingly.
He was also about to go on a spontaneous vacation. The only difference was that his destination was slightly further away.
Meanwhile, in the realm of Asgard...
Loki, clutching Odin's legendary spear, Gungnir, approached Heimdall, the all-seeing guardian of the Bifrost.
"How is my dear brother faring on Midgard?" Loki asked smoothly.
Heimdall's golden, piercing eyes stared unblinkingly ahead. "Thor is currently undergoing his trial on Earth."
Loki feigned surprise. "I was under the impression the All-Father intended for his banishment to be permanent. Asgard only has one prince now."
Heimdall's gaze remained fixed on the cosmos. "Thor's journey will not end on Midgard."
Heimdall seemed to see something in the distance and shook his head slightly. 'A mere mortal woman believes she can easily sway the Crown Prince's incredibly dense, unyielding heart? Foolish.'
Watching Heimdall completely dismiss him, Loki's mood soured.
"Tell me, Heimdall," Loki hissed, stepping closer. "You possess eyes that can pierce the veil of the Nine Realms, and you wield immense power. Did my father ever fear you?"
Heimdall finally turned to look at Loki. "No. Because the King knew that I would always remain absolutely loyal to my King."
Loki sneered, slamming Gungnir onto the Bifrost. A massive wave of golden energy rippled across the rainbow bridge.
"But I am your King now!"
Heimdall's expression didn't change in the slightest.
"You are merely the acting regent. When King Odin awakens from the Odinsleep, you will revert to being a prince."
Loki's face twisted in fury. But even with Gungnir in his hand, he did not dare strike the immensely powerful guardian. He turned and stormed away, his cape billowing behind him.
Heimdall gripped the hilt of Hofund, his massive broadsword, watching Loki's retreating back.
"Odin knows I will never betray him because he never hides his true intentions from me, and I never seek to pry into his secrets. But you..."
Heimdall turned his gaze back to the stars.
"I have never been able to see your true face."
Heimdall resumed his eternal watch over Thor. He swore to himself that if Thor encountered any true, lethal danger on Midgard, he would personally activate the Bifrost and obliterate the threat.
In the fiercely martial, honor-bound society of Asgard, the bold, aggressively straightforward Crown Prince perfectly embodied their ideal of a warrior king.
The secretive, magic-wielding second prince, however... only truly had one supporter.
