Marvel: I Am The Lord of the Shadow Dimension
Chapter 41: Chapter 41: A Sense of Ceremony
The two of them didn't break out any hard liquor. After all, JARVIS would finish analyzing the new element shortly, and Tony needed a clear head.
Tony poured Luke a glass of vintage red wine.
"Here, try this. It's from my private collection. I've never actually tasted it myself, but considering how obscenely expensive it was, it should be pretty good."
Luke was speechless. "Do you seriously just buy whatever's the most expensive without knowing if it's actually good?"
Tony smirked. "I only buy the best."
'Cheap things are rarely good, but expensive things aren't always the best,' Luke thought to himself, taking a sip.
"So, what are you going to do if the new element is successfully synthesized?" Luke suddenly asked, watching Tony finally relax into the sofa.
"What do you mean, 'what am I going to do'?" Tony was genuinely confused by the question.
"Look, we don't know for sure if this new element can actually replace palladium. We don't even know if it's highly radioactive. If it turns out it's not the miracle cure you think it is, what's your backup plan?"
What's my backup plan? Tony felt a sudden wave of uncertainty. He had exhaustively synthesized and tested every single element on the periodic table without success. Just when he was about to give up entirely, Fury had handed him Howard's old research, revealing an undiscovered element.
Tony had poured all his hope into synthesizing it, but he hadn't truly considered the terrifying possibility that the element might not be compatible with the Arc Reactor.
"If this fails... you might want to seriously consider having the shrapnel surgically removed from your chest," Luke suggested gently, seeing Tony's inner turmoil.
"Ah. So that's what you were getting at," Tony smiled bitterly.
"I've privately consulted the absolute best cardiothoracic surgeon on the planet. He told me that even with his unparalleled skill, there's only a twenty percent chance he could successfully extract all the microscopic shrapnel before I bleed out on the table."
Tony sighed, downing the rest of his expensive wine in one gulp.
"Even if I personally designed and built a suite of cutting-edge, microscopic surgical tools exclusively for him... the success rate only goes up to forty percent. That's still a failing grade."
Tony stared into his empty glass, his eyes filled with a deep, hidden exhaustion and quiet despair.
He didn't want to live like this. He didn't want to rely on Luke to magically detox his blood every few days, and he certainly didn't want to rely on a glowing battery in his chest just to keep his heart beating.
Luke understood. Tony Stark was an incredibly proud, borderline arrogant man. He had always believed he was the smartest person in any room, frequently blowing off world-renowned experts because he considered them beneath his intellect. For a man like Tony, relying on a flawed machine to simply stay alive, or begging a friend to save him every week, was a massive blow to his ego.
But a forty percent survival rate was genuinely terrifying. It was worse than a coin flip, and it entirely relied on a stranger, Dr. Stephen Strange, performing flawlessly under immense pressure.
Tony could barely accept entrusting his life to a close friend like Luke or Rhodey. Entrusting it to a stranger with a scalpel? Unacceptable.
Seeing Tony staring blankly ahead, Luke instantly regretted bringing it up.
In the original timeline, Tony eventually found the courage to undergo the surgery, but that wasn't until much later, after the Battle of New York and the Mandarin incident. By then, medical technology had advanced slightly, and Tony had matured significantly.
Luke downed his own wine and clapped Tony firmly on the shoulder.
"Alright, my bad. I'll drink to my own stupidity," Luke said sincerely. "You're right. The odds of the surgery succeeding right now are way too low. But don't forget, human technology is constantly advancing at an exponential rate. Maybe a few years down the line, we'll have the medical tech to safely pull that junk out of your chest. All we need to do right now is make sure you live long enough to see that day!"
Luke stood up, looking out the massive glass windows at the starry night sky. 'If the medical tech doesn't exist on Earth, I'll go to space and find it. If it doesn't exist in this universe, I'll shadow-step into the multiverse and steal it!'
Tony looked up at Luke. Seeing the fierce, unwavering determination in the younger man's eyes, Tony couldn't help but smile, touched by the absolute loyalty.
"Hey, don't look at me like I'm some fragile piece of glass," Tony scoffed playfully, standing up. "I'm Iron Man. I'm literally made of iron. Well, technically it's a gold-titanium alloy, but 'Gold-Titanium Man' doesn't exactly roll off the tongue..."
"Sir," JARVIS's voice suddenly interrupted, carrying a hint of digital excitement. "The structural analysis is complete. The new element is perfectly stable. It is a 100% viable replacement for palladium, and it possesses zero radioactive output. Congratulations, Sir. You have just secured the Nobel Prize in Physics."
"What?! JARVIS, are you absolutely certain?!" Tony yelled, his eyes widening in pure joy.
"Did you hear that, Luke?! That means I can instantly swap out the core! No more heavy metal poisoning! No more drinking that disgusting green sludge!" Tony was practically bouncing on his heels.
"That's great!" Luke laughed. "Now you don't have to worry about accidentally giving Pepper radiation poisoning either!"
"Shut up and get over here!" Tony shoved Luke playfully toward the lab. "Grab your camera! I'm making you my child's godfather for this! You need to document this historical moment!" 3
Luke rolled his eyes. JARVIS literally had dozens of high-definition cameras recording the lab from every conceivable angle; they didn't need him to take photos. Still, Luke grabbed his camera and followed Tony to the workstation.
Tony had brilliantly used a blank, triangular Arc Reactor core casing as the receptacle during the particle accelerator test, meaning the new element was already perfectly seated and ready for use.
Tony grabbed the glowing blue triangle. "You ready?" he grinned at Luke.
Luke held up the camera, holding down the burst-fire shutter button to capture every frame. "Go for it!"
Tony ripped the old, toxic palladium reactor out of his chest, immediately wincing as the shrapnel shifted. Without missing a beat, he slammed the new, triangular Arc Reactor into the socket.
Almost instantly, Tony felt the difference. The clean, incredibly potent energy surged through his body. Astonishingly, the new element seemed to actively seek out and neutralize the residual palladium toxicity lingering in his bloodstream. It wasn't just clean energy; it was a literal cure!
Feeling a massive weight lift off his chest—both metaphorically and physically—Tony threw his head back and let out a triumphant, ecstatic yell. 1
Luke kept the camera clicking, capturing Tony's raw emotion.
"Why are you making such a weird face?" Luke laughed, reviewing the photos.
"You don't understand! This is incredible! I feel completely reborn! I haven't felt this healthy in months!" Tony gasped, leaning against the table, high on the sudden influx of clean energy.
"Alright, calm down before you give yourself a heart attack from pure excitement," Luke joked, though he was genuinely thrilled for his friend.
Tony just laughed, entirely ignoring Luke's warning. He immediately ordered JARVIS to display the new element's raw power output statistics and eagerly dove into the data, his genius brain already calculating how to optimize his armor.
"I'm sending the photos to JARVIS. Make sure he sends me the high-res video file later," Luke said, watching Tony enter his manic work mode. He knew Tony was probably going to stay up all night building the Mark VI armor now.
To Luke, staring at lines of code and energy schematics was more boring than reading an ancient dictionary.
"I'm heading home. Don't work yourself to death on your first day of being cured," Luke called out, drawing a Sling Ring portal.
As he stepped through, he heard JARVIS's crisp voice echo in the lab: "Video file successfully deleted, Sir."
'Ah, that's the stuff,' Luke grinned, finally feeling like the universe was balanced again.
Back in his LA apartment, Luke checked his phone to review the news about the Hammer Industries presentation scheduled for tomorrow night.
He decided he needed a good night's sleep. Tomorrow was going to be a massive fight.
He had briefly considered just teleporting into Vanko's secret lab at Hammer Industries and assassinating him tonight, but after doing some quick reconnaissance earlier, he realized the idea was impossible. Justin Hammer was incredibly paranoid; he had installed dozens of hidden cameras in every single room of the facility—including three in Vanko's personal bathroom!
Luke genuinely wondered how Vanko managed to use the toilet with three cameras watching him. Luke knew he personally wouldn't be able to go under those conditions unless he taped over the lenses.
Since stealth assassination was off the table, a head-on confrontation was inevitable. But Luke wasn't worried. As long as he pre-deployed his Shadowkhan strategically around the Expo tomorrow, Vanko wouldn't stand a chance. The moment the Hammer Drones tried to go rogue, his ninjas would instantly dismantle them before they could fire a single bullet.
Feeling confident in his plan, Luke went to sleep.
The next morning, Luke woke up, ate breakfast, and was just about to head over to Malibu to check on Tony's progress with the Mark VI.
Suddenly, his phone rang. It was Tony.
"Luke! Get over here right now! It's an absolute emergency!" Tony yelled frantically.
Confused, Luke quickly opened a portal and stepped into Tony's living room.
"What's wrong? Did the reactor fail?!" Luke asked urgently.
Tony pointed furiously at the TV screen. "Is this a joke?! Justin Hammer is hosting a weapons demonstration at the Stark Expo main pavilion tonight! How is that possible?!"
Luke stared at him in sheer disbelief. "Wait... that's your emergency?"
"Yes!" Tony was genuinely outraged. "Hammer Industries produces absolute garbage! They sell cheap, unreliable weapons with zero actual technological innovation! The Stark Expo is a sacred ground meant to showcase the pinnacle of human achievement! There is no way his application was approved legally! He must have bribed someone!"
Luke sighed, pulled out his phone, and opened a specific news article he had saved.
"I think you should watch this interview," Luke said, handing Tony the phone.
The video played. A beautiful female reporter shoved a microphone in Tony's face.
"Mr. Stark, is there any possibility you might allow your rival, Hammer Industries, to present their technology at the Stark Expo?"
On screen, Tony, looking distracted and annoyed, simply waved his hand. "Sure, whatever. Of course."
Tony stared at the screen, horrified. "When the hell did I say that?!"
"I think it was right after the Monaco race," Luke recalled. "Right after you got attacked by a crazy Russian in a bathroom."
"That's completely out of context!" Tony argued frantically. "I distinctly remember my next sentence being, '...as long as your technology actually meets our standards!' This is libel! I'm having Pepper sue this entire news network for slander!"
Luke shook his head in amusement and scrolled down to show the author's byline. "Take a good look at the reporter's name."
Tony squinted at the screen. "Christine Everhart? Wait, she looks familiar..."
"You had a 'wonderful evening' with her a while back," Luke reminded him dryly. "If I recall correctly, it was literally the night before you left for Afghanistan for the 'Fun-Vee' incident."
Tony finally remembered. His face instantly turned pale.
He had slept with the reporter, completely blown her off the next morning, and essentially insulted her journalistic integrity. And now, she had intentionally cut his interview quote out of context to secure Justin Hammer a prime spot at the Expo, purely out of spite.
Worse yet, he hadn't officially locked down his relationship with Pepper yet! If Pepper saw this reporter digging up old flings and realized Tony was the reason Hammer was at the Expo...
Instantly, Tony's 'emergency' shifted from suing Hammer Industries to desperately figuring out how to formally confess his feelings to Pepper and officially make her his girlfriend before she found out about the interview.
Luke was absolutely furious.
"I don't have human rights as a single guy, do I?!" Luke yelled. "I have to fight supervillains, cure your poisoning, AND act as your wingman?! Just go up to her and confess directly!"
But Tony, heavily traumatized by his own romantic blunders on his birthday, suddenly became incredibly obsessed with the 'sense of ceremony.' He immediately sat down at his computer and started frantically googling 'How to execute the perfect romantic confession.'
Watching a forty-year-old billionaire genius intensely studying WikiHow articles on romance, Luke was completely speechless. Sighing heavily, Luke sat down and tried to use his own limited, anime-derived knowledge to help Tony plan a confession that wouldn't end in complete disaster.
