Married To My One Night Mistake
Chapter 116: Faced with an irresistible offer
***Selen’s meeting with The Vance Group**
On Thursday morning, Selen walked into the elite London headquarters of The Vanguard International Art Group, her mind clouded by a deep sense of bewilderment.
Although she had accepted their invitation, she had come there with absolutely nothing other than confusion. She simply wanted to look these people in the eye and figure out why a multi-billion-pound conglomerate had tracked her down at a private estate in Kent before she had even finished unpacking her bags.
After she introduced herself to the receptionist, an assistant immediately escorted her to a private executive boardroom on the top floor.
Sitting at the center of the table was Mr. Vance, a senior director representing the executive board of Vanguard. He stood up immediately to offer a formal handshake, his expression filled with a welcoming warmth.
"Ah, Ambassador Williams, thank you so much for coming", Mr. Vance said, gesturing toward the leather chair opposite him.
"We are absolutely thrilled that you accepted our invitation. Please, make yourself comfortable" he said.
Selen took her seat slowly, looking around the empty, grand room before locking her eyes onto his with a soft but curious expression on her face.
"Mr. Vance, thank you for the warm welcome", Selen said quietly, her voice gentle yet clear. "But I must admit I am here entirely out of confusion. My diplomatic deployment to England was handled under strict confidentiality protocols by the Spanish ministry.
I have only been in the country for a few days, I have never sent my resume to Vanguard, and I have not uploaded my professional profile to a single United Kingdom job board.
How exactly does a company of your size know my exact location, and why are you inviting me to talk out of nowhere?" she asked him.
Mr. Vance smiled smoothly, leaning back in his chair without a hint of discomfort at her honest question. "Vanguard is a global institution, Ambassador. We operate on a tier where very little high-level movement remains truly private, especially when a curator of your exceptional caliber relocates across the English Channel.
Let us just say that our corporate board maintains close ties with certain senior committees at the National Gallery, and your arrival was flagged to us as a massive opportunity.
There is no scam here, I assure you. It is simply elite business logistics" he said to her.
Selen gave a small, thoughtful nod, her deep suspicion remaining entirely intact despite his polished corporate explanation. It was a grand invitation, but the sheer suddenness of it made her completely uneasy.
"You talk about opportunity, Mr. Vance, but Vanguard almost never reaches out to outside curators out of nowhere. What could an organization this size possibly want with me so urgently that you had to track me down in Kent?" she asked him.
"We want to discuss your reputation in the art scene and your expertise in seventeenth century provenance for our new international acquisition expansion", Mr. Vance explained.
He slid a single sheet of paper across the table toward her. "We are restructuring our entire European masterpiece collection. We know about your dual degree and familiarity with law and art history, and we know you have the exact profile to manage major museum negotiations.
The board wants to explore your availability for a potential high level role, and we are prepared to structure a framework that ensures your personal capital remains completely untouched if we move forward" he said.
Selen glanced down at the paper, but her expression remained measured. She knew what her current diplomatic post already guaranteed her, the ministry was already providing her a huge estate on rent, a comprehensive monthly stipend for healthcare, an organic food allowance, and completely free specialized healthcare for Diana’s recovery.
Vanguard’s baseline figures were impressive, but they were not enough to make her uproot her family’s stability.
"This is a grand overview, Mr. Vance, and I am genuinely flattered by the board’s interest", she said, looking back up at him with a polite smile.
"But the parameters are impossible for me right now. My primary focus is ensuring a stable environment for my children. My daughter is still recovering from a major medical procedure, and my triplets just resumed school earlier this week right here in Kent.
I am not looking to change my career layout, I am not going to relocate them to London, and I am certainly not going to spend my days commuting to a corporate office while they are adapting to a new country and their new school routine. My current position already completely insulates my family’s financial and medical needs" she said.
Mr. Vance nodded slowly, showing that he had anticipated her reservations. He leaned forward, resting his forearms on the table, his tone turning incredibly earnest.
"We are fully aware of the excellent provisions your current diplomatic post offers, Ms. Selen. That is why Vanguard is not looking to merely match them, we want to offer your family absolute, long-term institutional security" he said.
He had now caught her attention. "If a position is finalized, the board is prepared to restructure this opportunity to fit your life in Kent perfectly" he said. He began to bring out three papers and handed them over to Selen. They were drafts, but they gave a view of what she should expect.
"First, Vanguard will structure an executive housing buyout. The corporate group will purchase the Kent estate you are currently renting, allowing you to remain there entirely rent free, with the deed legally vesting directly to your name after your second year with the firm.
Furthermore, the contract will include a guaranteed educational stipend structured through an independent trust, fully covering undergraduate tuition and boarding at any global institution for your triplets when the time comes" he said. Selen internally gasped.
And regarding Diana’s recovery," Mr. Vance continued softly, "we understand that embassy channels can be bogged down by certain factors.
Vanguard will grant you immediate enrollment in our private executive health tier. This includes a dedicated medical concierge who handles direct, priority placement with the top pediatric oncology and hematology specialists in Kent, with all private consultations, treatments, and specialized home nursing fully underwritten by the firm." he said.
