Manaless Mage

Chapter 62 What A Monster…

A simple spell like ‘Lightning stun’ could take over eight minutes which wasn’t ideal during a battle with mana beasts. No mana beast would wait for an Elementalists to complete a spell before attacking.

It was one of the reasons why the dark ages were very tough. Back then, Elementalists had to struggle to cast spells. 𝚍n𝚘v𝚕.𝚘𝚛𝚐

They didn’t have the luxury of “runic languages” or artefacts. All they had were guns and firearms which were pretty useless against mana beasts.

Seventy percent(70%) of confrontations with mana beasts during those days led to death or the loss of humans.

People had to delay or stall mana beasts just to gain the chance of successfully landing a spell. Some even used their companions as bait, all to stay alive.

According to what Harry was taught in the academy, only about five to ten percent of humanity were strong and resilient enough to survive the ‘apocalypse ages’.

Luckily, the mana beasts that reigned back then were only between stage one to three. More powerful beasts only appeared over time from rifts and dungeons.

If there had been more powerful mana beasts then the whole human race would have been wiped out.

It was only after the discovery of chants and ‘runic languages’ that spell-casting became easier.

Elementalist could then cast spells faster and people could then stand on ‘equal’ grounds with mana beasts. The tide of the was shifted as human beings gradually dominated the mana beasts.

Those with stage six mana core and above(mages) didn’t need to use chants since their elemental mana control had reached insane levels.

They could simply channel their mana themselves without the aid of spell chants. Though they didn’t use spell chants, it didn’t mean their spells and elemental attacks were weaker; in fact, it was stronger and much more powerful when compared to Elementalist’s spells.

As Harry chanted the spell, he gradually channeled his energy to his fingertips.

Something like this would have been extremely difficult for the past Harry, however the present Harry was already quite proficient in energy control.

Since he channeled his energy everyday at the academy and also at home whenever he was free, his energy control had naturally improved.

Though the level of the skill itself had yet to improve—it was still stuck at level three, Harry knew he was now better at controlling his energy.

However, channeling his energy outside of his body was still quite difficult.

Although, he had been practising and training his control, his energy control still wasn’t good enough for him to draw energy out of his body easily.

He still had to focus and channel it with utmost concentration.

In order for an Elementalist to cast a spell, they had to channel their elemental mana outside of their body and not just in their body.

Unlike other Elementalist, Harry didn’t have the luxury of using chants to assist in channeling his energy faster, he had to do it all by his own willpower.

While Harry was chanting the spell, or rather, saying the chants and channeling his energy, ‘mana core illusion’ was also doing its job.

It created an illusion of Harry channeling elemental mana and chanting the spell. Whatever Harry did with his energy, the skill did with his ‘elemental mana’.

The instructor’s eyes had been on Harry since the beginning of the class.

Though there were about twelve students in the class, Harry was the only one that made significant progress in chanting the spell.

Some of the other students hadn’t even managed to channel their elemental mana properly, they were simply saying the chant without channeling the required mana.

There were a few who managed to channel their elemental mana, however, they were extremely slow.

The instructor’s eyes widened slightly as he watched Harry. Though the speed at which Harry was channeling his mana was easy for the the man to do, it didn’t change the fact that it was monstrous for a stage one Elementalist; especially one that just became an Elementalist a month ago.

‘What a monster…’ He mumbled inwardly with a slight smile on his face. He was naturally excited at the fact that humanity had gained a new prodigy.

Harry’s brows twitched rapidly as he kept channeling his energy while simultaneously chanting the spell.

Saying those chants while also channeling his mana was a lot harder than he would like to admit.

Since he needed to be in full concentration to move his energy, it was anything but easy to keep muttering some words while trying to keep that concentration.

Although Harry could simply activate the skill, he knew that would be a rather stupid thing to do.

It would seem somehow ‘automatic’ if he just activated the skill and didn’t focus on channeling the ‘mana’.

Since the image he was giving to the academy was that of a talented Elementalist with a very solid foundation, he couldn’t do anything that would break that image.

The academy instructors weren’t stupid, he had to make them believe he was actually casting the spell or else he could get into a lot of trouble.

He wasn’t even planning on casting the spell today, he would simply channel his ‘mana’ till the end of the class.

His plan was to wait till the next day or even the next two days before finally casting the spell. At least, he could give the excuse that he had been practising at home, which wasn’t a complete lie.

While he planned on advancing through classes fast, he still didn’t want it to be too fast as that would put too much attention on him.

It would be strange if he ‘casted’ a spell perfectly at first trial by simply reading a spell-book.

He had already placed himself under the academy spotlight by accomplishing what other failed to achieve in months in just a few weeks, he didn’t want to attract too much attention upon himself.
