Malicious Compliance: The Necromancer Who Hated His Script [LitRPG / Progression Fantasy / Satire / Comedy / Villain / Revenge]
Chapter 44: Solo Cleaning, Part 3: The Pine-Scented Slaughter
And so, after receiving orders from his boss, Larry vanished into the void and 'fast-traveled' with Ugo towards the next dungeon.
"Larry. Be careful about this dungeon. This one is different from the others, that's why I'll come with you." Ugo said to him.
'Scrik Scrik', Larry scratched his skull. (Translation: Ok.)
"The Caverns of Wailing possessed a reputation that preceded them by several hundred miles. Across the sprawling Kingdom of Aethelgard, from the sleazy, ale-soaked taverns of Oakhaven to the furthest, mud-stained agricultural hamlets, the very name of this dungeon was used by exhausted mothers to frighten their misbehaving children into eating their boiled vegetables." Ugo said, probably remembering the dungeon.
Larry continued to 'listen', occasionally scratching his head and giving a thumbs-up 👍.
"The Adventurer’s Guild universally classified it as a Grade-A biological nightmare. The subterranean labyrinth was a jagged maw of razor-sharp stalactites, a suffocating miasma that reeked of rotting eggs, sulfur, and ancient despair. The cavern walls constantly wept a highly corrosive, neon-green slime that could dissolve a standard iron broadsword in a matter of seconds." Ugo added, forgetting that Larry wasn't a sentient being.
Basically, this place was the absolute perfect ecosystem for the vile, the damned, and the deeply, unapologetically unhygienic. The monsters that dwelled within were not merely beasts; they were aberrations born from magical putrefaction, creatures that thrived in absolute chaos and filth.
A "Hero" like Nick, the self-proclaimed Greatest Hero of Humankind, would normally find this place to be the ultimate stage for his glorious crusade. It offered darkness to cleave with his holy light, repulsive monsters to purge, and an infinite well of Experience Points to farm for his global streaming rankings.
But today, the ecosystem would not meet a Hero. It was about to be subjected to a hostile corporate takeover.
Deep within the oppressive, suffocating darkness of the first cavern, where the toxic air was so thick it could be cut with a dagger, the gloom was suddenly torn apart. It wasn't a flash of divine holy magic or the explosive flare of a high-tier fire spell. It was a perfectly circular portal, pulsing with a pure, iridescent blue energy.
And it didn't smell like brimstone or ancient mana. It smelled aggressively of industrial-grade bleach, eucalyptus, and a hint of lavender.
From the portal stepped Larry.
The skeletal janitor did not brandish a legendary sword forged by ancient gods, nor did he hold a staff carved from the branches of the World Tree. He carried a heavy-duty, galvanized steel bucket, filled to the absolute brim with a bubbling mixture of boiling water and highly concentrated magical degreaser. Slung across his back, like the customized sniper rifle of a professional assassin, was his trusty industrial mop. Its magical microfiber strands seemed to vibrate with the suppressed urge to sanitize. He wore his impeccable corporate work coveralls and a pair of thick, yellow rubber gloves that reached past his bony elbows.
Floating silently just above his right shoulder was Ugo, the Demonic Central Operator. Ugo had temporarily abandoned his massive, skeletal archivist body back at the Central Command Room of Fort Blackstone. Instead, he had projected his consciousness into a single, massive floating eyeball. The eye wore a tiny, spectral operator's headset, a tactical multi-pocket vest (stuffed with magical Sticky notes). It held a glowing holographic clipboard that emitted a cold, blue light.
"Target acquired, Larry," Ugo’s voice boomed, transmitting directly into the skeleton's hollow skull with crisp, professional clarity. "Preliminary environmental analysis indicates atmospheric toxicity is currently sitting at 98.4%. Extreme biological hazards have been detected in every sector of this quadrant. Our leader has ordered Extreme Tactical Sanitization. We are to leave absolutely nothing behind except the refreshing scent of pine and the crushing, undeniable weight of a sterile, code-compliant work environment."
Larry tilted his skull, producing a soft, satisfying bone-crack. Scrik-scrik. He dipped his mop into the steel bucket, wrung it out with a mechanical, twisting motion that defied all known laws of skeletal physics, and took his first step into the abyss. His non-slip rubber soles made absolutely zero noise against the slime-coated rock floor.
Almost immediately, the dungeon reacted to the intrusion. The cavern ceiling above them, which until a moment ago appeared to be nothing more than an ocean of jagged shadows, began to writhe and shift. Thousands of small, red, glowing eyes snapped open in unison, burning like hot coals in the dark.
These were the Vampire Bats of Wailing (Lv. 45). They were not your garden-variety chiropterans. They were the size of hunting hounds, equipped with razor-sharp fangs capable of piercing heavy plate armor. They possessed a collective sonic attack that could liquefy an unprepared adventurer’s eardrums. Sensing fresh meat—or at least, fresh bones and a giant eye—the swarm detached from the ceiling and dive-bombed like a furry, bloodthirsty waterfall.
"Hostiles inbound at high velocity," Ugo noted, scribbling rapidly on his luminous clipboard. "Initiating Phase One: Employee Onboarding and Orientation."
Larry did not flinch. He didn't assume a defensive martial arts stance, nor did he take a single step backward. With glacial, terrifying calmness, he reached a bony hand into one of the deep pockets of his coveralls. He extracted a massive, pressurized canister adorned with Ravenloft Holdings' golden logo. The label read: [TACTICAL ENVIRONMENTAL DEODORIZER: SPRING MEADOW ASSAULT - INDUSTRIAL GRADE]. [System Note: Larry's levelling was giving him new equipment.]
As the swarm of monstrous bats descended upon him, their jaws unhinged to reduce him to dust, Larry pressed the nozzle.
PSSHSHSHSHSHSHSHSHSH!
A concentrated, atomized jet of incredibly powerful floral scent exploded into the cavern. It wasn't a poisonous gas. It wasn't lethal magic. It was purely, aggressively, unbearably pleasant.
The Vampire Bats hit the cloud of deodorizer, and their biological systems, accustomed to centuries of breathing rot and decay, went into an instant mental blue screen. The sensory overload was devastating.
They didn't die, but they plummeted to the cavern floor like stones, sneezing uncontrollably. Their leathery, terrifying wings now smelled undeniably like a high-end botanical garden in mid-May.
While the deadly Level 45 monsters rolled on the floor in fits of sneezing, Ugo floated forward. His optic nerve glowed with a legal, bureaucratic authority that made any standard subjugation spell look like a child's parlor trick.
"Attention, indigenous fauna!" Ugo thundered, his voice magically amplified to sound like a corporate megaphone. "You have been officially classified as unoptimized organic assets! By the authority vested in me by Ravenloft Holdings, your current employment as 'Random Adventurer Encounters' has been terminated, effective immediately, due to extreme productive inefficiency!
The giant bats blinked, confused and disoriented, sneezing out tiny clouds of lavender-scented dust. A few tried to growl, but a jasmine-flavored hiccup muffled the sound.
"However," Ugo continued, summoning a massive stack of ethereal, glowing parchments from thin air that began to hover around the cavern, "Ravenloft Holdings is an equal-opportunity employer. We recognize your untapped potential to generate high-yield waste. Therefore, you are hereby formally offered exclusive freelance contracts as Independent Magical Contractors with registered VAT numbers!
The parchments flew toward the bewildered bats, hovering in the air right in front of their snouts, accompanied by tiny, self-writing quill pens.
"Your new job title will be: Guano Extraction and Sorting Specialists!" Ugo announced, reading from his clipboard. "Your duties will include collecting, categorizing, and packaging your own guano into biodegradable, branded bags for our new Agricultural Export Division. In exchange, you will receive a highly competitive salary paid in premium synthetic blood-orange juice, comprehensive health insurance that includes full dental care—because frankly, those protruding fangs are a severe workplace hazard—and, of course, paid weekends off! If you accept these terms, please press your paw or claw to the dotted line!"
While Ugo kept speaking, Larry tried to pick up some small rocks from the ground with his skeletal fingers, without success. (Why?)
Faced with the terrifying, relentless aura of corporate bureaucracy and overwhelmed by the smell of spring flowers, the monsters looked at each other.
A dental plan? Paid time off? In this devastated economy, ruined by constant Hero incursions that only existed to slaughter them and steal their copper coins?
One by one, overcoming their predatory instincts with the sheer logic of economic survival, the Level 45 monsters pressed their claws against the glowing contracts.
DING! DING! DING!
The System's blue interface, visible only to Ugo's specialized optics, updates in real time.
[SYSTEM NOTIFICATION: 3,450 VAMPIRE BATS HAVE JOINED THE 'RAVENLOFT FREELANCE NETWORK'.]
[GUANO PRODUCTION ESTIMATES: YIELD INCREASED BY +400%.]
[NEW CORPORATE ASSET UNLOCKED: ECO-FRIENDLY DARK FERTILIZER.]
"Excellent," Ugo said, adjusting his spectral headset. "Larry, the airspace is now clear and fully unionized. Proceed with floor polishing and hazard neutralization."
Larry gave a crisp, professional thumbs-up 👍. He tied a neon-yellow bandana around his skull, kindly offered by Ugo, right above his empty eye sockets, and went into full operational mode.
He didn't just clean; Larry eradicated the very concept of dirt at a molecular level. He moved like a dancer, a maestro whose baton was a heavy-duty mop. The corrosive green slime covering the walls—a substance capable of melting flesh in seconds—was met with a brutal, methodical application of [PURE MANA BICARBONATE].
Larry twirled his instrument in the air, flinging the neutralizing powder against the acid. The chemical reaction was instantaneous, visually spectacular, and chemically perfect. The terrifying flesh-melting slime violently hissed, boiled, and underwent a total pH reversal. In seconds, the lethal green substance solidified, transforming into harmless, stackable, soft cubes of lemon-scented gelatin.
Larry systematically worked his way through the labyrinth. He placed bright yellow folding plastic signs reading [CAUTION: WET FLOOR - SLIP HAZARD] in three different languages every fifty yards. He replaced the toxic, smoke-emitting will-o'-the-wisp torches with practical, low-energy LED lamps powered by stabilized mana crystals.
For no particular reason, this dungeon was being too calm. There were no edgy, brooding adventurers grinding for their lives. There were no Korean guys in black trench coats randomly awakening unpaid souls for their shadow armies while looking intensely at the camera. There were no generic harem protagonists accidentally falling face-first into the bosoms of elven clerics.
"Mh. This is too strange," Ugo said, his giant pupil darting left and right. "Statistically, we should have encountered at least one arrogant noble demanding we carry his luggage, a betrayed protagonist seeking revenge by eating monster meat, or someone who might try to hurt you. The narrative causality is suspiciously absent."
Larry didn't care about narrative causality. He just kept clearing and gathering random loot—mostly discarded rusty daggers and empty potion bottles that didn't meet recycling standards—because this would make his Master happy, and he only wanted this.
Finally, they reached the massive, acid-eroded adamantine doors that led to the Boss Room.
With a gentle push from Larry's mop handle, the doors creaked open, revealing a chamber the size of a football stadium, completely flooded with a bubbling lake of hyper-corrosive, neon-green acid.
At the center of the lake, the surface began to churn. A whirlpool of toxic sludge formed, spinning faster and faster until a colossal figure erupted from the depths.
It was the [Great Acid Slime King (Lv. 95 Elite Boss)].
The creature was a towering monstrosity of translucent, bubbling gelatin, filled with the half-digested skeletons of previous adventurers. At its center pulsed a massive, glowing crimson core that beat like a corrupted heart.
Suddenly, the Slime King's body shifted, forming a massive, featureless face that glared down at Larry.
And then, the boss began to speak. Because, of course, in this trashy, trope-filled world, every boss had to have a multi-stage transformation sequence and a five-minute monologue.
"FOOLS!" the Slime King's voice boomed, echoing with a wet, squelching sound. "WHO DARES ENTER THE SANCTUM OF THE ANCIENT OOZE?! I AM THE ACCUMULATED MALICE OF A THOUSAND BETRAYED ELVES! I AM THE EMBODIMENT OF THE WORLD'S FILTH! MY VERY EXISTENCE IS A CURSE UPON HUMANITY!"
Ugo sighed, pulling out a stopwatch. "Ah, here we go—the 'Tragic Backstory' monologue. Let's see how long it takes him. Usually, they average around four minutes before they power up."
"FOR MILLENNIA, THE ARROGANT HUMANS HAVE DUMPED THEIR WASTE INTO THESE CAVERNS!" the acid Slime King roared, its gelatinous body expanding, absorbing the acid lake around it to grow even larger. "I WAS ONCE A PURE WATER SPIRIT! BUT SOCIETY CORRUPTED ME! NOW, I SHALL CLEANSE THIS WORLD WITH MY BURNING, MELTING DESPAIR!"
For the whole time of his monologue, Larry had cleaned 67% of the Boss' room, and gathered a lot of strange loot such as [Black Lace Panties], [Rotten Legendary Dragon Egg], [Heroic Toe Nail], [Expired Coupon for a Happy Ending Massage], [Coupon to Summon Demon Lord Aurora], [Heroic Bra] etc.
Those items were very dirty, so Larry locked them in a zip bag and disposed of them.
The boss raised two massive, gelatinous arms. A blinding aura of green, toxic energy flared around it, creating localized lightning strikes. The ground shook. Dramatic, invisible choir music began to play from absolutely nowhere. Small rocks floated into the air, defying gravity purely due to the sheer output of 'Anime Boss Energy'.
"BEHOLD! MY ULTIMATE, UNBLOCKABLE, WORLD-ENDING SECRET TECHNIQUE!" the Slime King shrieked, its crimson core glowing brighter than a miniature sun. "PREPARE TO BE ERASED FROM EXISTENCE! [HELLFIRE CORROSION: APOCALYPTIC DESPAIR CANNON]!"
A massive, screen-filling beam of pure, concentrated acid began to charge in the Slime King's maw. It was an attack designed to force the Hero to dig deep, remember his friends, and unlock the power of friendship to deflect it at the very last second.
Larry, however, did not have friends. He had a job.
The only thing he said to the boss was nothing more than a [Thumbs Down], indicating that the entire place was really dirty.
Larry casually walked forward, his rubber boots squeaking slightly on the wet stone. He didn't draw a legendary weapon or scream the name of a counter-attack.
He simply reached into his bucket and pulled out a large, magical industrial bleach canister with a heavy-duty screw cap.
Scrik. Larry unscrewed the cap.
"DIE, PATHETIC SKELETON! AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH!" the Slime King roared, firing the massive beam of apocalyptic acid straight at the little janitor.
Larry didn't even blink (mostly because he lacked eyelids). He just tossed the entire, open canister of pure, concentrated industrial bleach directly into the incoming beam of acid.
The collision did not result in an epic clash of opposing energies, with two beams struggling for dominance.
It resulted in basic chemistry.
The hyper-concentrated bleach hit the hyper-concentrated acid.
FOOOOOOOOOOOSH!
There was a blinding flash of sterile, white light. The dramatic choir music cut out abruptly, followed by a record scratch. The floating rocks plummeted to the floor.
The epic, world-ending beam of despair was instantly neutralized, turning into a massive wave of harmless, lukewarm, soapy foam that washed over the cavern, leaving everything sparkling clean.
"WHAT?! MY APOCALYPTIC DESPAIR CANNON! IMPOSSIBLE!" The Slime King shrieked, but its voice was no longer booming. It was shrinking. Rapidly.
The bleach had entered its system. The terrifying, flesh-melting neon green color of its body was rapidly fading into a pastel, baby-blue hue.
"NO! MY DARKNESS! MY TRAGIC BACKSTORY! IT'S... IT'S ALL BEING WASHED AWAY! I FEEL SO... FRESH! CURSE YOUUUUU!"
With a final, pathetic squeak, the colossal, Level 95 Elite Boss shrank down to the size of a microwave. Its gelatinous body solidified completely.
The epic boss had been transformed into a giant, perfectly rectangular, docile bar of baby-blue soap, smelling strongly of ocean breeze and lavender.
Clack Clack Clack.
Larry walked up to the giant bar of soap. He tapped it with his mop handle to ensure it was fully solidified. Then, he pulled out a roll of heavy-duty industrial bubble wrap and a tape dispenser.
With incredible speed, Larry shrink-wrapped the former Slime King, slapped a Ravenloft Holdings shipping label on it, and stacked it neatly on a magical wooden pallet Ugo had summoned.
"Target neutralized via extreme chemical balancing," Ugo noted, stamping the digital paperwork on his clipboard. "The 'Apocalyptic Despair Cannon' actually proved quite useful for generating a widespread lather. I'll make a note to weaponize that for the laundry department. Excellent work, Larry."
Larry gave a thumbs up 👍.
The entire dungeon, once a hellscape of darkness, death, and tragic anime monologues, had been transformed into a series of sterilized, brightly lit corridors. The cavern smelled of fresh laundry and corporate efficiency.
The job was done. Larry picked up his bucket, did a final quality-control check by running a bony finger over a rock to verify the absolute absence of dust, and opened a portal to his next destination.
Nick the "Hero" was going to be very, very disappointed.
"Let's go to the next dungeon, Larry," Ugo said.
And then, our beloved Skeleton stepped inside.
[FEEDBACK FROM THE HIGHER REALMS]
NTR_Lover69: "BRO. BRO. LARRY JUST TURNED A LEVEL 95 ELITE BOSS INTO A BAR OF SOAP. A BAR. OF. SOAP. I'm crying. Nick is gonna show up to a dungeon that smells like lavender and find nothing but a shipping label. The NTR isn't romantic anymore. It's ECONOMIC. Nick is getting cucked by a skeleton with a mop. 10/10."
CorporateSlave42: "Ugo unionizing the vampire bats with dental plans and paid weekends is the most terrifying thing I've ever read. These monsters are gonna have better benefits than I do. Also, Larry finding [Heroic Bra] and [Expired Coupon for Happy Ending Massage] in the loot is the most realistic dungeon drop I've ever seen. 5 stars."
Larry_Simp_01: "HE PUT A BANDANA ON. HE PUT A BANDANA ON AND WENT TO WORK. LARRY IS THE MAIN CHARACTER. I don't care about Mordecai's revenge arc anymore. I want 40 chapters of Larry cleaning dungeons and unionizing monsters. The way he shrink-wrapped the Slime King like an Amazon package... I'm framing this chapter on my wall."
Waifu_Hunter99: "The Slime King's monologue was going so hard. 'I AM THE ACCUMULATED MALICE OF A THOUSAND BETRAYED ELVES!' And Larry just... threw bleach at him. No counter-spell. No power of friendship. Just chemistry. The 'basic chemistry' line killed me. Also, Ugo timing the monologue with a stopwatch is the most based thing. Monologue meta is dead. Long live Larry."
GoonerKing: "Ugo said 'Your new job title will be Guano Extraction and Sorting Specialists' and the bats just... signed. A dental plan. They sold out for a dental plan. This is the most realistic fantasy world ever written. Also, Larry collecting [Black Lace Panties] and immediately putting them in a zip bag like 'not clean, not acceptable' is the energy I need in my life."
SystemAdmin: "⚠️ NOTICE: The 'Apocalyptic Despair Cannon' has been officially reclassified as 'Laundry Department Asset.' The Slime King is now a bar of soap. Please update your monster manuals accordingly. Also, Larry's productivity in this chapter exceeded all projected metrics. Suggest immediate promotion to 'Head of Global Sanitization.' Employee of the Millennium, no contest."
Lukas_The_Great: "The way Larry just... ignored the boss's entire tragic backstory. Didn't listen. Didn't care. Just kept cleaning. And when the boss finally finished his four-minute monologue, Larry had already cleaned 67% of the room. The disrespect. The absolute, professional, unbothered disrespect. This is why Larry is the GOAT."
Cultivator_Dao: "The loot table. THE LOOT TABLE. [Heroic Toe Nail]. [Rotten Legendary Dragon Egg]. [Expired Coupon for a Happy Ending Massage]. Larry found a coupon for a HAPPY ENDING MASSAGE in a dungeon. What kind of adventurers were coming here?! Also, the [Coupon to Summon Demon Lord Aurora] is definitely gonna be relevant later, and I'm scared. Larry just casually threw a potential plot hook into the void because it was 'too dirty.' Peak."
XxShadowSlayerxX: "Okay. I admit it. Larry is him. I was wrong. The skeleton with a mop just cleared an S-rank dungeon faster than any hero could—no dramatic fights, no emotional power-ups, just bleach and paperwork. And the vampire bats now have a union. A UNION. This is the most broken character in fiction. 5/5 stars. Larry's agenda is real."
AriseButCorporate: "Imagine getting isekai'd into a fantasy world, preparing your epic revenge arc, and finding out that all the dungeons have been cleaned by a skeleton with a bandana and the monsters are now filing quarterly reports. Nick is going to show up at the Caverns of Wailing and find a vending machine. I can't wait."
Goon_Lord_420: "The Slime King's death was 'I FEEL SO... FRESH!' I'M DONE. THAT'S HOW HE GOES OUT, not with a heroic sacrifice, not with a tragic last stand. He got washed and felt fresh. This is the most undignified death in fantasy history, and I am HERE for it. Larry didn't just kill him. He sanitized his legacy."
Fan_Shipper: "Ugo and Larry are the real power couple. Ugo does the paperwork, Larry does the cleaning. Ugo handles the bureaucracy, Larry handles the chemistry. Ugo times the monologues, Larry neutralizes the bosses. They are the corporate dream team. Better love story than Nick and Lucy."
LoreMaster_77: "Notable subverting of the 'Boss Monologue' trope. By having Ugo actively time the monologue and Larry ignore it entirely, the narrative rejects the standard power-up structure that usually rewards villains for exposition. The chemical neutralization of the 'Apocalyptic Despair Cannon' via basic industrial bleach is a masterful statement: in a world of magic and destiny, practicality and chemistry are the true endgame. Also, the vampire bats accepting union contracts is an unexpectedly poignant commentary on how even monsters seek stability in an economy ruined by constant hero invasions. 9/10."
RandomUser_42: "Larry tried to pick up rocks with his skeletal fingers and couldn't. THAT'S THE DETAIL. He can solo an S-rank boss, but he can't pick up a rock. He's perfect. He's flawed. He's trying his best. Protect Larry at all costs."
TheOneWhoReads: "The entire chapter and not a single mention of Lucy or Nick. And I didn't miss them. Not once. Because Larry is the main character now, this is his story. We're all just living in it."
