One evening, when their training had ended and the two of them had been sitting beneath the open sky, Vishnu had spoken to him about the divine astras whose power could influence the outcome of wars and the responsibilities that accompanied their use.

Among the weapons he had entrusted to Devara was the Narayana Astra.

Unlike the knowledge passed from Vrishasena’s guru to his disciple, however, Devara’s gift had come directly from its divine source.

He could still recall Vishnu’s expression when he had asked about the limitations associated with such a weapon.

There are weapons that men may receive only once in their lives, Devara, his father had explained.

Their use comes with conditions that must be respected, and those who inherit such knowledge must accept the consequences that accompany it.

But I am not giving you this weapon merely to win a battle.

"I am entrusting it to you because I believe in you, and because there will come a time when you may face a challenge that cannot be overcome by strength alone."

Vishnu had rested a hand upon his shoulder before continuing.

"I trust that you will understand when its power is necessary and when it must remain unused. The responsibility is yours, just as the decision will be yours when that moment arrives."

At the time, Devara had not known when that moment would come.

His father had never explained every trial that awaited him, nor had he attempted to remove the uncertainty from his future.

Vishnu had simply entrusted him with the weapon and left him to understand its significance through experience.

Now, standing before an army threatened by the very astra his father had prepared him to wield, Devara finally understood why Vishnu had considered it necessary.

His expression became serious as he looked towards the thousands of soldiers gathered beneath the banners of the allied kingdoms.

Most of them had no means of defending themselves against a weapon of this magnitude.

Their armour, courage, and military training would mean little if the divine energy above them descended unchecked upon their formations.

Even the most experienced commanders could not guarantee that every soldier would escape its reach.

Devara had promised to protect his people, and he had no intention of allowing an entire army to be destroyed merely because its enemy possessed a divine weapon.

He straightened upon the chariot.

"Father, you certainly have an unusual way of reminding me why you made me train so hard,"

he murmured, his gaze still fixed upon the glowing heavens.

"I suppose this is what you meant when you said that the future would eventually demand more than a strong arm and a sharp weapon."

Then he reached for Pinakodanda.

The divine bow came into his hands with familiar weight, its sacred form catching the light that spilled across the battlefield.

Devara planted his feet firmly upon the chariot and raised the bow towards the sky, aligning himself with the gathering power of the Narayana Astra.

His four sabertooth tigers immediately sensed the change in their master’s energy.

They stood motionless before the chariot, their muscles tense and their attention fixed upon the divine radiance above them.

Across the battlefield, several warriors noticed Devara’s movement.

Those who had expected him to remain an observer until the enemy’s weapon was released now watched as he lifted Pinakodanda and reached for its string.

The king of Trivenivrata had finally decided to intervene, but the nature of his response remained unclear.

Even Dronacharya, despite his extensive knowledge of astras, could not immediately determine what Devara intended to do.

Devara drew the bowstring backwards.

At first, nothing more than a faint shimmer appeared around his fingers.

Then his yogic energy began to gather, flowing through his arms and into Pinakodanda.

The atmosphere around his chariot changed, and the energy radiating from his body grew steadily stronger.

Unlike the violent turbulence surrounding Vrishasena, however, Devara’s power gathered with a controlled intensity, each movement of energy directed precisely towards the bow.

A deep ocean-blue radiance emerged along the string.

The colour spread gradually, beginning as a narrow line of light before growing brighter with every passing moment.

It resembled the depths of an ancient ocean beneath a clear sky, carrying within it a sense of immense depth and immeasurable power.

Flecks of golden light appeared within the blue radiance, moving like distant stars suspended beneath the surface of a celestial sea.

As Devara continued drawing the string, the gathered energy condensed between his fingers, forming the outline of an arrow.

The surrounding atmosphere responded immediately.

The clouds above the allied army began to move, though they did not gather into the same violent spiral that had formed around Vrishasena’s weapon.

Instead, the blue radiance spread through the sky in broad, luminous waves, meeting the golden light of the first Narayana Astra without yielding to it.

The two divine energies seemed to recognise one another, their auras expanding across the battlefield until the distinction between the light reflected from the clouds and the light produced by the weapons became increasingly difficult to discern.

Drona stared at Devara’s bow, his eyes widening as the familiar divine signature emerged from the ocean-blue energy.

"No," he whispered, almost unable to believe what he was seeing.

"He possesses the same astra."

Bhishma turned towards Devara, his expression changing from concern to astonishment.

Karna lowered his bow slightly, while Ashwatthama watched the king of Trivenivrata with renewed interest.

They had known that Devara possessed extraordinary abilities, and many had witnessed his command over divine weapons, but none of them had expected him to answer the Narayana Astra with another invocation of the same weapon.

On the opposite side, Vrishasena’s confidence faltered.

He had recognised the energy gathering around Devara’s bow, and the realisation struck him with the force of an unexpected blow.

The Narayana Astra was not an ordinary weapon that could be acquired through military training or purchased with wealth.

Its knowledge had been entrusted to him by his guru, who had sacrificed his own ability to invoke it in the process.

Vrishasena had considered that knowledge one of the rarest advantages he possessed, something that placed him beyond the reach of ordinary kings.

Yet Devara was now standing before him with the same divine power gathering between his fingers.

"How? How could he possibly possess the Narayana Astra?"

Vrishasena muttered, unable to tear his gaze away from the ocean-blue radiance.

His nearest commander offered no answer.

The man was staring at Devara’s chariot with an expression of disbelief, while several warriors around them exchanged uncertain glances.

Their king had unleashed a weapon that was supposed to be an extraordinary advantage, only for his opponent to reveal that he possessed the same power.

But Devara’s invocation did not end there.

The arrow taking shape upon Pinakodanda grew brighter, and its outline became increasingly distinct.

Golden patterns appeared along its surface, winding around the ocean-blue core in intricate designs that seemed to shift whenever the light moved.

The radiance expanded beyond the bow, enveloping Devara’s hands and illuminating the armour upon his body.

For a brief moment, the four sabertooth tigers appeared almost motionless beneath the brilliant light, their silhouettes outlined against the divine energy gathering above the chariot.

Devara felt the familiar presence of Narayana within the weapon.

It was not a foreign power that he had struggled to control, nor was it a force he had acquired without understanding its nature.

The energy answered his invocation with the ease of a familiar language, responding to his yogic strength while remaining bound to the divine authority from which it originated.

He drew the string to its fullest extent.

The ocean-blue radiance blazed across the battlefield, and the second Narayana Astra was finally revealed in its complete form upon Pinakodanda.

For several heartbeats, the two kings stood facing one another across the immense battlefield, each holding the same divine weapon, their opposing energies illuminating the heavens in gold and blue.

Vrishasena had sacrificed the knowledge of the Narayana Astra to unleash its power, believing that his single opportunity would provide the decisive advantage he needed.

Devara, however, had received the weapon directly from Lord Vishnu, who had entrusted it to him for the challenges that awaited him.

The restriction that had accompanied Vrishasena’s inheritance did not apply to Devara in the same manner, and his possession of the astra was not limited to the single use that bound the king of Vrishabhapura.

Yet Devara did not release his weapon immediately.

He held Pinakodanda steady, studying the opposing astra and measuring the power gathering within the sky.

He understood that the next moment could determine the fate of thousands, and he would not act carelessly simply because he possessed the means to answer his enemy.

The divine radiance continued to spread above the battlefield, while the warriors below watched in stunned silence.

The war had begun with swords, spears, and the strength of ordinary soldiers.

It had now reached a point where two manifestations of Narayana’s power stood poised against one another, and every commander present understood that whatever happened next would be remembered long after the banners had been lowered and the dead had been carried from the field.
